I haven't felt  very safe here the last couple of months.  I have lived here for 23  years and think Philadelphia is not just the stopping point for I-95 travelers.  It has a culture and flavor of it's own.

The slaughter that is going on both civilian and police has brought it to media attention, but this started  way before this year.  Drugs are a problem. The highways are congested with rude discourteous drivers (where did they come from)  it wasn't like this 20 years ago.  There is no place for our youth to go and do something constructive with their time.

Our schools are not concerned with what is happening to our children.  Our teenagers are being slaughtered, sometimes over something not worth dying for.

Today I read something disturbing.  I read about the accused killer's escape (alarming) and capture (thank God).  However, his family helped him get away and projected a lack of respect for society and the law, they out and out lied to police officers questioning them at first..  We cannot make our own rules-we just can't.  There is no justification for murder.  The sooner  we accept this the better.  Just because your angry doesn't give  ANYONE the right to settle a dispute with a gun, or obtain goods you want by brandishing a gun, or killing innocent people doing their business just because they are in your way.

There is no race card on this. There is no black, white, hispanic........  We are all as Philadelphians in this together.   Our young people have no way of sorting things out morally if we tell them it's OK to murder someone.

Our police have a really tough job to do and we are not helping them at all by casting the blame and race card at them.  Using guns should be a last resort, not a first resort, however, lately I don't think police have had much choice in the matter!

Philly is in a bad place right now - the worst shape that it's been in since the 80's.
I'm with the notion that with Street leaving office and Sylvester Johnson retiring, we're going to be seeing a lot of changes in the future - good changes in a postive direction!

Thanks for you great comment!!!
You're right. There is a hint of a change, but it's not going to be easy. We (I include myself) have to quit whining and griping and start voting. Know your politicians!! Start teaching our kids to be polite and respect other people, even those we don't share an opinion with.

I want to add, I come from a long line of firefighters and policemen in Ohio, the job is not an easy one, law enforcement needs to find another way to control crime. The present policy is not working and it's becoming a horror to watch the murder rate grow. I beleive we have the right to defend ourselves. What our limits are is the real question? What is just?

I have trouble watching a good man die. I have trouble watching our youth die over trivial material things or drugs. I hate watching people in general, teaching and encouraging disrespect of authority. I especially have distaste of the news and the detailed glorification of violence all over the nation, in our schools, streets, homes. It arrived here years ago, Philadelphia this is our wake up call. Don't miss the alarm.

Finally, and I have seen this up front and personal, the breaks criminals get in our law system and the trauma the victims and their families go through to get a criminal convicted. I have personally been a victim so this is an area I can talk about with some knowledge. Let's start slam dunking this guys into jail, no GET OUT OF JAIL card........

I am not a native of Philadelphia, but I have grown to love living here, Philadelphia. I have discovered so many cultural and fun events here that are unique and I feel Philly is a well hidden tourist spot to visit. Reports do not do it justice, we only hear the negative, not the positive. There are some great people living here in Philly. I have my own small business. I have a B.S. in Education. I joined this site because I am concerned about Philadelphia and World events politically speaking. I would like to hear what other people are thinking and share ideas and opinions.
