Mine are all too old now.
I'm getting the tree decorations out tonight and wondering why. Don't get me wrong, I love the Holiday season, but I think my fondness for it has to do with the excitement of the kids at this time of year. Early in December, my girls would be outside directing my efforts at Christmas lighting, because at one time I must have told them that that's how Santa finds our house. Christmas eve, putting together bicycles, and Barbie houses, and such the night before. Watching the fire in the fireplace with a glass of single-malt and a couple of cubes, and repositioning all of the toys and gifts to make the effect just perfect when the kids walked into the living room on Christmas morning.
I have a six-month-old granddaughter now, but alas, she's too young to be Christmas fun yet. Besides, I won't have the opportunity again to pretend to be asleep in the morning when the kids come busting into the bedroom to drag me out to see what Santa had brought them.
Certainly, seeing family and friends at this time of year is rewarding, but it's just not the same anymore.
Oh, and Pertzborn, Santa drank Bud at our house.. ;-)

Sometimes pulling out the decorations after the kids are gone reminds us they grow up and move on. A tree is a symbal of a time to give, receive. A time of enjoying anothers joy. When I think of Christmas I think of love and letting go. Loving our children is also letting go. When I love something I let it go, if it returns it was meant to be, if not it was never there in the first place. From your Love and letting go, your adult children return, they bring a new child for you to love and enjoy your tree as they did for many years, and what it means. It is different now, does that mean it is not the same. An infant may not understand, but in a room full of love and joy, they surely know. And what a gift that is to them.

I'm an introspective nearly 50 white guy. I'm thinking about how I might retire. Tired of giving everything away. All of my 3 kids are gone, I have a smart, good-looking wife, and a couple of shi-tzu's. I scuba dive, play guitar in a rock band, restore vintage Porsches, and try to remain calm. 4th of July and Halloween are my favorite holidays.
