The Olympics are everywhere and one can't help but here all, er, some, about it. And, honestly, I don't know what to make of all of it, so I thought I would put it up for discussion.

THe Olympics are supposed to transcend politics so that the athletes can participate in the one sanctified 'holy' event that is supposed to still exist. In other words, the Olympics symbolizes hope for the world and one's country while athletes hope to win. However, the Olympic committee decided to give China a chance. And CHina has made the Olympics their own. It's a communist Chinese Olympics and the Chinese have done a lot of beating....journalists and protestors.

While China has come a long way, they are still limiting the rights of people to protest harsh treatment. Or, should China stifle protests and punish people for disrtupting a tradition? Is this not the time to show one's dissention with the govt.? Is protesting the Chinese govt. unpatriotic if you are Chinese?

I see both sides of those coins. And, honestly, I don't know what to think about this. In my heart, I bleed Liberal blue and think Americans should choose not to watch, etc. But, I also think it would be nice to set aside my disagreement with the Chinese and enjoy my own freedoms. So, what do you all think? Down with CHina (why are we trading with them and not Cuba? Potential for money me thinks) or Bring it Beijing?

Well this is one of those rare occasions when I agree with you. I think China is undeserving of being a host to the Olympics, based on their human rights record. I won't be watching.

The Olympics to me is a time to put politics aside and allow athletes to compete. China has a rough history with how they treat their citizens.

I don't want to see politics get in the way of pure competition. The Olympics have a strong tradition in peace.

This year, I anticipate the Olympics to start and hope America does well. At at the end, we can go back and hate China again for selling America tainted toys and all the other things we hate China for!

I will watch the Oplympic's. It's not a political thing. It's a union of the finest athletes in the world.

People make it a political thing and use it to their advantage but thats not what we're here for. We're here to support the greatest athletes our nation (America) has ever produced.

Our athletes are there representing the best of the best in the world. They are representing the supposedly greatest nation in the world, the USofA.

This is a showdown everyone against guns and violence should support. It's purely America kicken butt without guns and without bloodshed!

I will watch in full support of those that represent the US. Win or Lose they gave their all to be there.

I was listening to some discussion on talk radio about how China is trying to use the Olympics to prove to the world that it will be the world's next superpower. They're looking to mop the floor with the US athletes. If in fact that's true it's a shame. Politics should be left out of the competition. The Chinese have gone to extreme lengths to attempt to cover their real agenda, and the Chinese people have been inconvenienced beyond anything we've ever seen. It's still a communist country and their human rights record is shameful. I also don't think they should have been awarded this years games.....

Since journalists are not permitted to film certain things, doesn't that in itself inject politics in the Olympics? Do you thing it best that journalists work within the guidelines they are given? Or should they do there what they would do here? And should the President show his support for the CHinese olympics? Would you think the same thing if the olympics were in Cuba?

It wouldn't matter to me where the Olympics were held. I'm an athlete that is very big on downhill skiing and extreme skiing.

I seperate politic's from athleticism knowing there are radicals that always want to change the perspective of things and put a twist on what it really is.

It's simply a world gathering of those who challenge to train their bodies mind and soul beyond it's human limits to be the best at what they do.

To see all the nations gathered under one roof in peace every 4 years is just an incredible feet in it's self.

As for our media being able to film certain things I just want to say, when has our media ever given a damn. If theres an exposure to be seen, some journalists photographer is going to get it... plain and simple.

#1 In modern time the Olympics always have, and will always be, political.

#2 With steroid use running rampant, how can anybody take this, or any other sporting event seriously?

#3 In terms of excitement, I find the Olympics equal to watching paint dry, or metal rust.

I will exercise my rights as an American and NOT watch them.
The Olympics have been politicized at least since the 30’s.
Did anyone seriously believe that the Chinese would keep the promises they made?

The concept of the Chinese government up holding the Olympic spirit is ludicrous.
Ask the Tibetans about the Chinese methods of governance and sense of fairness.

I will not watch one bit of it and would urge that no one watch it.
Perhaps if they get very low ratings some small point will be made, it may sting the Chinese honor, make them lose face.

BOB54 come on how about the winter Olympics? Ski jumping? Who ever came up with that?

Just - I bet your fat and drink too much beer. You probably couldn't jump off a curb without throwing your back out.

No one on the planet will care whether you watch or not, I mean really!

Get a cause with a real purpose!

You're right JustMePa. But ski jumping is only exciting when we get to witness "The agony of defeat"!
If God had meant for man to fly, he would have given us beaks!:)

I thought about boycotting, but wouldn't that just punish Americans? All that would do is keep people from watching ads on TV and buying stuff which would cost millions.

Keep in mind, I am just thinking aloud and have no opinion.

Half the stuff sold on TV is cr@p anyways. Should boycotting ever work, it would actually save millions of sucker consumers money that they could wisely spend on real neccessities.

Gas, mortgage, rent, groceries, electricity, sewage and trash removal.

You keep stressing the point of "Cuba Olympics".

That can never happen because all their principal jumpers, swimmers, divers & runners are already here.

C2G no more then you know me yet that didn’t stop you for insulting me so we at least know you are a hypocritical arse
I ridiculed no one so now we know you are ignorant.
I and others find summer Olympics boring, winter Olympics are more interesting.
I was on three collage bowl teams as a starter what’s your background?
I have climbed among others Mera Peak, Chula West Peak, Rainier, Kilimanjaro and K2 you will excuse me if I find your sliding down a small hill on sticks less then impressive.
You don’t support those that represent America you feed your own narcissism and give support to an oppressive brutal repressive regime.
I have served America in war and peace what have you done beside wave a little flag made in China?
What we can deduce for certain is that you are a self-centered, ignorant pissant little jackass that has a problem with basic comprehension.
I suppose that’s you call to glory?
