I wanted to compliment FOX6 for airing a story that I caught a little bit of yesterday on the news at noon.  It was about a program operating in the Waukesha Co. Court System, that directs teens into focussed learning programs, instead of jail, for first time offenders and those convicted of petty crime, who are at risk of gang involvement.  Apparently, this program teaches these kids the reality of how developing a criminal record, changes your life for the worse, and helps them to learn the education and skills to succeed in finding a legitimate, adult life-path.

Instead of funneling kids deeper and deeper into the system, here is an example of stopping them, and giving them the tools to find their way out, and live productive lives, as responsible citizens.  In return for voluntary participation in the full program, the offense that got them to court is taken off their record... a real second chance!!  This is an encouraging sign of intelligent and compassionate focus on crime prevention, at work within the system.  I would like to see more of this.

Wisdom...it sounds like a great program. It is important to help teens learn what will happen if they continue on the wrong path. So many teens don't have responsible parents and need extra guidance. Maybe this will help save a few futures.

Hey Katbird

This is off the topic of this post, but related. I am always trying to think of new ways that we can increase security and prevent crime, without taking away the rights and freedoms of good citizens. I heard you mention on another post that you work for a security Co., so I wanted to pass along this idea that I came up with, in response to the security problems at Mayfair Mall:

"If they want to have real and lasting security at the mall, what they should do is: Establish a stronger presence of community oriented volunteer groups at the mall, to create an alternative, positive focus for the energy of teens. Let's face it, "the Mall" has a culture of its own. Why should we allow it to be a culture that is completely dominated by the immature morality of teenagers, surrounded influences that only feed into a sense of materialism and competitiveness? Secondly, they should have a debit card that holds "mall credits" to be used for all purchases, and require people to swipe that card to gain entry to the mall. With the help of a few well placed security guards, by the ATM and credit exchange stations all those without a card with positive credits on it, or showing valid membership in a volunteer group would not be allowed in. That way, we could ensure that those who do not have a valid reason to be at the Mall, are never there to begin with to cause trouble, while those who patronize the Mall, either for shopping, or as a gathering place, for the community, could do so, in greater safety and freedom." All this idea needs is a computer engineer, who could design

...a machine that would operate like a cross between an ATM and a Kinko's card machine. What do you think?

Maybe I should open this post to all reports and suggestions of "good news" about people who have found ways to prevent crime through non-authoritarian measures?

I have never been there. guess I can't go with this idea. Oh wait eould there be an application to get a trial membership. I think I will go to the place down the street to buy my clothes. Sorry, bad idea.

Oh well, not everyone will feel comfortable with doing something new. Maybe it will take time... Look at all of the new ways of doing business and using currency that people have adapted to, just in the past 20 years. One day there might be room for an idea like this... who knows? At least I'm thinking on more levels than "who do we shoot or lock up?"

It's unforunate that not all counties in Wisconsin have a "second chance" program. First time offenders, especially young people, should have an opportunity to get their lives on track. I like the Mayfair Mall solution for the most part. It would be a safer place if security was aware of who was in the mall and when.

Well, it seems that my little side note about coming with a mall membership, is a moot point now. The parent Co. that runs Mayfair has already chosen to go with a strategy modeled after a security plan already in place at one of their other Malls...

"mark of the beast!?" It's just a MALL!, not the gates to the city! A lot of businesses use membership as a means of security and besides, I never said ANYTHING about branding an ID# on anybody's forehead, get real!!

HA! Did you here? Now they are going to check everyone's ID at the door, and keep ALL teens out, not just the trouble makers... do you think THAT is better?

Momagina- Why don't you go down there and protest that they are the helpers of satan, because they are checking people's ID?
