Whether a greater police presence in the schools will be a positive or negative influence over-all, depends largely on what their primary role will be in the schools, and the attitude of the officers they send.  If they are placed in the role of  liason officers, helping to secure the school and become more familiar with and involved in the community, most people who responded to posts about this topic have stated that, where they have seen programs like this in place the effect is generally positive.  If however their primary role is one of being a secondary line of defense and punishment, against students misbehavior, with little or no community involvement, tensions in the schools will likely increase.

Instead of "cracking down" on our children, our schools and our parents should be building them up to be good citizens...  Instead of the only reaction from our schools being one of stepping up punishment for students who do not understand how they should behave, we should be finding more effective ways of TEACHING them that sense of understanding, and the appropriate self-discipline to express that understanding.

Punishment teaches only consequences, not good behavior.

Recently my teenage son came home with a chip on his shoulder and felt that he did not have to do his homework. After asking and telling him he needed to get it done he refused. I've taken away his PS2 for a week. To him that is punishment and to me that is consequences. As soon as it was taken away he did his work and has begged to get it back ever since. I don't have a feeling one way or the other about police in schools, but who is going to protect our kids when we are not able to? I'm all for teaching understanding and self-discipline! That is what I teach my kids but there still needs to be puishment and consequences for for bad behaivor.

You are correct that there need to be consequences for bad behavior. My argument is that it would be wrong to expose children to more opportunities for harsher punishment, without increasing equally their access to rewards for good behavior, and instruction and positive role modeling.

When your son changed his behavior, did he get his game back? If not, what value should he find in obedience, aside from the knowledge that he is doing what is expected of him?

If there are students who can't act right in school don't punish just remove them !Why do we have this need to save every child from themselves !We waste too much time and money on those who could careless about their education !Why not invest in the students who care and build more prison cells for those who don;t !

Asher

I am glad that you are able to find the law enforcement presence in your school comforting. If you feel comfortable approaching the officer(s) at your school, use your access to them to learn as much as you can about the limits of your rights under the law, and the limits of their power, and any advice they can give about what steps children and adults should take, so that you can protect yourself from crime, as well as from the errors in judgment that you, your fellow students, or any young person (or adult) may make.

There are many people out there like crobsid52, who think that no sympathy should be shown to children for not having a perfect understanding of their role in maintaining civil order, and would rather see our nation spend the billions of dollars it would take to imprison them all, than spend the millions it would take to teach that to them.

We can build a far better world than that for you and the rest of our youth, as future citizens, to live in. Imagine what the world would be like if ideas like crobsid's were passed into law, and made retro-active, so that anyone who had EVER mis-behaved in school was sent to prison, and they also removed what little funding there is for civic education and community involved volunteer programs?

what is wrong with schools is the same as what is wrong in society. the consequences for one's actions have been taken away - there are no more consequences. crooks cry their rights are violated, and the courts roll over for them like a turtle. a parent spanks an unruly child (notice I said spank, not abuse) and a mindless do-gooder screams child abuse, instead of thanking the parent for trying to show the child the consequences of their actions. corporal punishment is removed from schools, and now the students run them and teachers and administrators are helpless to do anything. children need to learn from the age of pre-k that certain behavior is allowed, even rewarded, and other behavior will lead to an unpleasent result. One other point - consistency and fairness are absolute necessities. the same behavior has to get the same response every time, no matter who the child is, whether its the poorest kid in the school, or the principle's kid. with out consistency you achieve nothing.

Wisdom lover -we already spend too much money on schools which for the most part a glorified daycare centers !We don't have the time or money to waste on the student that has no intention of learning !We had a system that worked in the past ,try to learn or go to vocational school! We need to take back our schools from liberals who think johnny will learn at his own speed !The real world don't have time to wait for you to find yourself ,get with it or get out !As far as money for prisons go i'd rather we invested in gas chambers ,electric chairs and ropes but i know that will never happen!DARN

Crobsid,

You seem like kind of a hateful person, and not very well informed on the issues you speak of.

Do you have any children in MPS? I do... Do you have any idea how LITTLE we spend on our schools as compared to other countries, like Germany, the Netherlands and Japan, where all of our engineering and research and other high paying jobs are going now? Get a clue!!

crobsid, you need more than 1 clue, you need volumes. because of the problem in our schools i mentioned before, it will take at least 10 - 20 years to reclaim the children of this country, if you start today with the pre-k kids. unfortunately, we would need to remove those kids from the drug-crazed, sex-obsessed, gun-toting, violence-mongering trash that pose as parents in this society, in order to make any progress. frankly, i am in favor of this. put small childern in an environment where service to others, care for the elderly, peace, and cooperation are taught. get them away from the trash they are currently forced to live in. alas, some bleeding-heart liberal will cry that you are taking them away from their "loving family". if the liberals feel they are such loving families, let the liberal put his/her kids in the same "loving " environment for a while and see what happens. the current under 30 generation is lost and I believe beyond hope.

The only thing it will take to fix our schools is to replace the teachers and remove the union !We as parents should choose those we like and be allowed to remove those that we don't want just like a real business does !Why should your job be protected if you don't produce?Grade the teachers and those who can't cut it should be shown the door !I'm not interested in what other countries pay for their education !Who's willing to pay the tax rates of all the countries in europe !If someone says its for the children we're all supposed to say okay but you may find out its for teachers benefits and will in no way help the children!!

Good luck finding better teachers if you don't want to pay them more... If I were the best engineer or the best computer programmer I could be (assuming I could find a job) I would be making 6 figures!! How much do think someone can make being the best High School Teacher. Or maybe you think teachers are supposed to have a superhuman ability to maintain interest in a low-paying and highly stressful job, that most others would not even want!!

If any teacher feels he's under paid he is more than welcome to see what he's worth in the job market !How many you think are going to give up their job !I'm not saying we should'nt pay them well for a good job but for a union to tell us what all of them are worth is wrong !Pay them for what they produce and remove those who can't or won't !Privite industries have to account for all money spent and decide if it was spent well !Why not teachers !As for keeping interest in low paying highly stressful job check out the retired people at macdonalds ,you could'nt find harder working people !
