I am  66 years old, worked for a company for over 5 years and was laid off on 09/14/2007. I applied for unemployment and was refused, I am now appealing.  I contacted my State and Federal Senators, also my representative, as I am the sole support of this household of 4 and have a huge mortgage.  Do you know there is really no help out there for people like me?  It took me 10 years to get my credit back on line and the only help I found was, the government will only POSSIBLY help you once foreclosure is started. So I have to be forced into a bad credit situation to POSSIBLY stop the foreclosure.  I suffer from a clogged carroided artery on one side of my head, osteoporosis, severe arthritis and a small anyurism on the other side of my head, and now I have to try to find a job and a lawyer.  My former employer had me listed as an independent contractor, which I was not and I have proof. There is suppose to be all these agencys out there where you can go for help, there really isn't unless you are an illegal alien, a legal alien or in a manority group, there is really no help for the elderly except they tell you to sell the house you built and lived in since 1976. You tell me where is the justice in a situation like this??? Beware of the employer who tells you being 1099'd only means you do not pay taxes until the end of the year.  They never explained to me that being 1099'd meant no unemployment taxes are  paid by the company, I was told if I wanted taxes taken out of my pay to just let them know, I did several times and was told to try being 1099'd another year.  When I insisted taxes be taken out, I lost my job and so did several hundred people who worked coast to coast as pre-employment verifiers. This company is owned by former New York City police officers and a lawyer, so my chances of winning are slim. If you need help, don't count on your government, you just get red tape and bull BLEEP.

Yep-not enough justice is out there for the "regular" person.

At 66, though, you really should be getting ready to be retired. You shouldt be supporting 4 people. Maybe they should be supporting you....

What???? Once again I see people asking the Government to be responsible for their well being rather than accepting personal responsibility. I see several things in your comment that bother me. 1) A huge mortgage at 66, you should be close to paying that nut off, unless you have been relying in credit card debt and have sucked all of the equity out of your home via refinancing.
2) Where are your savings to help you out through these hard times?
3) Did you get sucked into a teaser rate to buy a home larger than you could afford and now the new rate has come home to roost.
4) are you expecting Social Security and various other government programs to get you through you golden years?
I am by no means rich, but I do not expect our government to be there when times are rough, so, consequently, I SAVE EVERY AVAILABLE PENNY.
We have two paid off cars that are over 10 years old. We took a low interest 30 year "locked in" interest rate. And our kids don't have every brand new toy that comes to town. We bought a home that was well within our budget and are not over extended by our motgage. And we save, save, save. And we don't buy a new car every 4 years. A sucessful retirement comes from careful planning during your younger years. One must work for the dream in America, it is not an entitlement from the government. The middle-class and wealthy should not feel the need/be forced to redistribute wealth to accomodate entitlements. I am so sick and tired of this Liberal left socialist movement that is occuring in this country today. If you truly believe the government owes you some

I have worked since I was 11 years old, my children didn't get every toy that came down the pike, I have a paid off 1986 Mercury, We had the shell of this house built in 1976 and my husband and I finished the entire inside while I worked a full time job and my husband worked a fulltime job and 2 part-time jobs. My husband and I still found time to serve as volunteer firefighters for close to 30 years. We tried to start our own business in 1995 and used the paid off house to finance the business, so now my husband had a full time job, and 3 part time jobs and I had a full time job and a part time job, we had to close the business in 1999 with a mortgage still on our home. My sons have never been in trouble in school, with drugs or the law, we have 4 sons, they have always been hard-working, but 2 of them fall into hard times and none of us ever asked our government for ANY kind of help till now, so I feel your comments are completely out of line.

Sorry tweet, I'm somewhat jaded. You sound as if your trying to live the dream. My comments are geared towards folks that expect special entitlements from our government to enable them to live better liveswithout the effort. I wish you well on your situation. I understand the need to help children in need and I would hope that when they get on their feet they will be able to return the favor. Unfortunately, all of us "average Joe's" are in the same box, the only way we can get help is if we hit rock bottom. It's unfortunate you business had difficulty, maybe that dream is still alive and will take flight for you soon. Good luck.

I am sorry for your situation and the fact of the matter is that if you were black, latino, or an immigrant from another country you could get government assistance in a second. It really stinks that that has to be the solution, but that is the world we live in. A real shame. Call Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson to start a rally or protest for you. They do everytime a black person does not get what they want. Just a tought, what do you have to lose. The blacks get whatever they want by doing it. So should you...

While you all make valid points about personal responsibility and being fiscally responsible, it seems that his main point has been missed. The man had a job. He was laid off. He should be entitled to collect. That's one of the things that get deducted from our pay. If he is being jerked around by his former employer then what seems to be his next recourse? How does he bridge an income stoppage while fighting for unemployment pay?

This guy is in a terrible place. He is 66 years old with, for whatever reason an unpaid mortgage. Obviously he must turn to family. His kids should be adults so can they help? Why should he be in this position with his former employer?

I am a female, my 2 sons that live with me, one is disabled and is waiting on his social security disability to come through, the other one's job was downsized to only part-time and he has a daughter to support, I am fighting my former employer for unemployment. The point you all have missed here is there is really no help out there for people like me.

Let me make myself very clear, the fact that there is no help out there for persons in my situation, and the fact that if I was of color, illegal or legal alien, there would be help coming, this is not the fault of the people of color etc., it is the fault of our government.
