I've been obsessively downloading 80's tunes and when I snapped up Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, I started to laugh out loud.

It's been one of my favorite songs and videos since I was a kid.  It was one of the few hit songs my parents would let me listen to.  They had a favorite term.... "That's too spicy."

That meant too provocative to put it gently.

So I grew up in Downey and the best Mexican restaurant around was La Guadalajara.  I loved the food, but I really begged to go because of the jukebox.  My brother and I would make our song choices and we both knew which ones we were allowed to play, but once in a while I would sneak in Madonna's Material Girl  (God forbid Like a Virgin!!!)

My mom would look around with disdain and then at us, asking who would request such a song by such a singer.

She loved Sledgehammer though... I wonder if she ever listened to the lyrics or just thought they were over our heads.  Of course they were.  But today, I just had the best laugh.

Here are the Sledgehammer lyrics below.  Tame by today's standards, but still!

You could have a steam train
If youd just lay down your tracks
You could have an aeroplane flying
If you bring your blue sky back

All you do is call me
I'll be anything you need

You could have a big dipper
Going up and down, all around the bends
You could have a bumper car, bumping
This amusement never ends

I want to be your sledgehammer
Why dont you call my name
Oh let me be your sledgehammer
This will be my testimony
Show me round your fruitcage
cos I will be your honey bee
Open up your fruitcage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be

I want to be your sledgehammer
Why dont you call my name
Youd better call the sledgehammer
Put your mind at rest
Im going to be-the sledgehammer
This can be my testimony
Im your sledgehammer
Let there be no doubt about it

Sledge sledge sledgehammer

Ive kicked the habit
Shed my skin
This is the new stuff
I go dancing in, we go dancing in
Oh wont you show for me
And I will show for you
Show for me, I will show for you
Yea, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do mean you
Only you
Youve been coming through
Going to build that power
Build, build up that power, hey
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Going to feel that power, build in you
Come on, come on, help me do
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Its what were doing, doing
All day and night

Check out the Sledgehammer video

I wasn't allowed to watch Three's Company either.  I never would've understood the innuendo.  I guess that's why I obsess about it today.  Thanks mom & dad! :)

The Crenshaw High School drum line is the coolest. They performed on Jimmy Kimmel with one of my favorite bands - Vampire Weekend.

By the way, when is Fox getting a late night show? (Leno???)

VW is influenced by both African popular music and Western classical music.

The drum line performed their song "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa." The first time I heard it I thought of Paul Simon, reggae and ska. If you watch the whole video, VW also performs "A-Punk," which reminds me of The English Beat.

The Shaw rocks. The Shaw drum line rocks the house!

Check em out here. I'm so proud of our local students. Bravo!!!!

Ok, so I'm obsessively playing songs over and over again on my ipod.  I need a change! Anyone have a great mix of songs that I can groove to while I'm driving to work?

Here's my top songs...

DJ Paul V - Gimme Even More, Britney! (all of the songs sampled are the best!  a bit of britney, kelly's shoes, Dead or Alive, Daft Punk, and the lovely Chris Crocker)

Beck - Timebomb (sounds best played really, really loud)

Feist - Inside and Out (chill song)

Rilo Kiley - Moneymaker (love Jenny Lewis)

Rihanna - Shut Up and Drive (makes me want to race)

T-Pain - Bartender (fun and makes me want to dance)

Cameo - Word Up (always a classic)

what's your fave playlist?
