The $700 billion dollar bailout is a bitter pill to swallow... but the buckwheat pancakes at The Pantry sure are delicious!  Ok, cheesy, but a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down....

Back to the bailout!  Among the early risers enjoying a cup of coffee at The Pantry downtown, there was plenty of discussion about the President's prime time speech.  As the sun rose and hours ticked by, fewer and fewer people had even bothered to tune in.

Of course, there are always those who don't care.  But for a few people, it was a conscious choice.  They change the channel when President Bush is speaking because they are so frustrated with him.  When I pressed them further, most people admitted they were concerned about the economy, but fed up.  One diner said there are seemingly two choices: we can bailout companies and people whose greed got out of control and a government that didn't step in to tame the problem... and the other choice, head into recession with job losses, shuttered businesses, evaporating retirement accounts and a plummeting stock market.

The President said let's not play the blame game and move ahead and do something.  Obama and McCain are joining him to discuss a solution.   What do you think?

Some lawmakers have said they don't like the President's plan, but don't know of a better solution.  It's fine and dandy to disagree, but if you disagree, what do you think should be done?

What do you think of the debates being cancelled?  I won't weigh in on when they should happen, but it would be interesting to hear both candidates' views on what should be done about the bailout, since one of them will soon be running the country.

That would be a debate I could sink my teeth into... in addition to a second helping of Pantry pancakes.

McCain is right.
Letterman can blow bubbles (just as Obama has been doing the past 18 months).

I don't like the bailout plan but I'm a realist. It is either the bailout or a very depressed economy for the next 3-5 years. If you had to choose one, which would it be?

Yep, we are all part of this process, and bein apathetic or paralyzed by thinking we are helpless to do anything about this corrupt administration.
saddly enough, Robert Redfords last movie (with Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep0 actually hit the bone on whats going on in America, very succinctly to the point.
I agree with Howard Zinn, that on a moving train "Nobody is Neutral!"
I can say after watching how this administration doing its deeds, that the feeling of frustration, anger and not bein able ta make a difference against vast corruption unfolding before our eyes from the get go, left me many times feelin that, "What can I do!"
A very bitter pill indeed we get to participate in.................
Heres wishin you the highest good in all yer endeavors.

I would much rather have a pint at Riordan's next door.
On am 640, the John and Ken show, They played parts of the archived speech of Bush's Conference on Minority Homeownership from 2002,Her is an excerpt:

"And so we've called upon Congress to set up what's called the American Dream Down Payment Fund, which will provide financial grants to local governments to help first-time home buyers who qualify to make the down payment on their home. If a down payment is a problem, there's a way we can address that. And when Congress funds the program, this should help 200,000 new families over the next five years become first-time home buyers."

and this one:

"Freddie Mac recently began 25 initiatives around the country to dismantle barriers and create greater opportunities for homeownership. One of the programs is designed to help deserving families who have bad credit histories to qualify for homeownership loans. Freddie Mac is also working with the Department of Defense to promote construction and financing for housing for men and women in the military.'

This seems to be a size-able chunk of the problem.

I heard that show too is was about how we got to this point because of Bush ..it was because he helped to push for low income people and illegal immigrants to get home loans..so yes lets blame Bush for being a stupid liberal who thinks anyone should be treated financially responsible..this is what liberal thinking gets you..and now you want to elect Obama ..don't you ever learn?if he gets in we will be in a depression for sure and you can kiss the 700 billion good-by ..but at least illegal aliens will be rewarded..

Wow... I loved the Rifleman growing up and thought Mark McCain was lead into plenty of really bad situations bye his self righteous overzealously do gooding father. I remember this one show were Lucas McCain stepped into the middle of a fight and got knocked on his rump... Ole Lucas was always doing things that could have gotten Mark killed.

Well... now we're in a situation where big brother has served up a plate of pancakes that looks like several layers of corruption. And yet... from the reports I'm reading it seems like there was a good idea gone wrong on the first layer. Sub-prime loans need not have been so sub-prime if they'd have made an operational procedure governing them that didn't go beyond certain limits.

The next step in this process will be to point fingers at the racial/ethnic identity at the majority of those who took those loans. Aren't we glad that here at myfoxla we have

to let us know these things?

Bailing Out the B*st*rds
Big Banks Stuck It to America

Michelle Malkin -- New York Post -- September 24
Bank Joins With Mexican Government to Undermine U.S. Immigration Laws.

Illegal aliens and the mortgage mess
For the last five years, I've reported on the rapidly expanding illegal-alien home-loan racket. The top banks clamoring for their handouts as their profits plummet, led by Wachovia and Bank of America, launched aggressive campaigns to woo illegal-alien homebuyers. The quasi-governmental Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority guaranteed home loans to illegal immigrants.
The Washington Post noted in 2005: "Hispanics, the nation's fastest-growing major ethnic or racial group, have been courted aggressively by real-estate agents, mortgage brokers and programs for first-time buyers that offer help with closing costs. Ads proclaim: "Sin verification de ingresos! Sin verificacion de documento!" - which loosely translates as, 'Income tax forms are not required, nor are immigration papers.' " [...]
In an interview about rampant illegal-alien home-loan fraud, a spokeswoman for the US General Accounting Office told me five years ago: "Considering the size of Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston and other large cities throughout the United States known to be inundated with illegal aliens, I don't think the federal government is willing to expose this problem for financial reasons as well as for fear of political repercussions."

thank you statueman but please don't give me the credit for this one ..it was KFI radio who played excerpts from a speech by president Bush in 2002 who said that we should give home loans to anyone especially Hispanics and blacks because they trail in the home ownership demographic ..Fannie Mae led by Franklin Raines and Freddy Mac did exactly that and this is the result..and other than on so called conservative radio station or programs it will never be said that straight forward because God forbid you point a finger at some poor minority or poor person..lets blame the rich greedy wall street crowd...guess what its both of them for this mess .a lot of those people should have never gotten those loans and the lending companies should have never given it to them in the first place

If it took us so long to get to this point, whats the rush on fixing it so fast.
are they trying to hide something ?
are they trying to scare us again ? like they did when they said we need to go to war now !!FEAR PEOPLE FEAR.
all this is because the banks did not check peoples income and job status.
people were lying about making 70,000 per year when they only make 40k
pay back all the commission money you made off the boggiest loans because that's all they wanted anyway the money!! GREEDY GREEDY GREEDY

In August, illegals collected over $19 million in welfare assistance and over $17 million in monthly food stamp allocations, for a projected annual cost of $432 million. Nearly twenty five percent of all welfare and food stamps benefits is going directly to the children of illegal aliens.

“Illegal immigration continues to have a devastating impact on Los Angeles County taxpayers,” said Antonovich. “Annually, the cost of illegal immigration to Los Angeles County taxpayers exceeds one billion dollars, which includes $220 million for public safety, $400 million for healthcare, and $432 million in welfare allocations. This does not include millions of dollars for education.”
