I've been obsessively downloading 80's tunes and when I snapped up Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, I started to laugh out loud.

It's been one of my favorite songs and videos since I was a kid.  It was one of the few hit songs my parents would let me listen to.  They had a favorite term.... "That's too spicy."

That meant too provocative to put it gently.

So I grew up in Downey and the best Mexican restaurant around was La Guadalajara.  I loved the food, but I really begged to go because of the jukebox.  My brother and I would make our song choices and we both knew which ones we were allowed to play, but once in a while I would sneak in Madonna's Material Girl  (God forbid Like a Virgin!!!)

My mom would look around with disdain and then at us, asking who would request such a song by such a singer.

She loved Sledgehammer though... I wonder if she ever listened to the lyrics or just thought they were over our heads.  Of course they were.  But today, I just had the best laugh.

Here are the Sledgehammer lyrics below.  Tame by today's standards, but still!

You could have a steam train
If youd just lay down your tracks
You could have an aeroplane flying
If you bring your blue sky back

All you do is call me
I'll be anything you need

You could have a big dipper
Going up and down, all around the bends
You could have a bumper car, bumping
This amusement never ends

I want to be your sledgehammer
Why dont you call my name
Oh let me be your sledgehammer
This will be my testimony
Show me round your fruitcage
cos I will be your honey bee
Open up your fruitcage
Where the fruit is as sweet as can be

I want to be your sledgehammer
Why dont you call my name
Youd better call the sledgehammer
Put your mind at rest
Im going to be-the sledgehammer
This can be my testimony
Im your sledgehammer
Let there be no doubt about it

Sledge sledge sledgehammer

Ive kicked the habit
Shed my skin
This is the new stuff
I go dancing in, we go dancing in
Oh wont you show for me
And I will show for you
Show for me, I will show for you
Yea, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I do mean you
Only you
Youve been coming through
Going to build that power
Build, build up that power, hey
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Going to feel that power, build in you
Come on, come on, help me do
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, you
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Ive been feeding the rhythm
Its what were doing, doing
All day and night

Check out the Sledgehammer video

I wasn't allowed to watch Three's Company either.  I never would've understood the innuendo.  I guess that's why I obsess about it today.  Thanks mom & dad! :)

Suzanne:

Did you also like Peter Gabriel's songs "Big Time" and "Shock The Monkey"? And yes, I understand your sneaking in Material Girl on the jukebox...Madonna did sing about an unhealthy relationship with men on that one. I kind of miss the Downey area, since my uncle and aunt are both gone...they were the last family living in the one house on Woodruff between Imperial and Washburn Road that is now an ice cream factory across from Columbus High School. They lived there until late 1978 - early 1979, then moved near Woodruff & Florence. By the way, what else do you have from the 80s? I used to DJ during my college years; Cyndi Lauper, the Human League, and Simple Minds are just 3 of my favorites.

Oh yes, Suzanne: Downey is a great city...one of the few places that has the old style McDonalds around too (Florence & Lakewood).

Wow Suzanne, You have a little rebelious streak in you. I have some years on you and thought Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and the Eagles were cool. But you are more musically informed than I am.

BTW great makeover today.

here is a new tune from motley crue that i really like. not as bad as 2 live crew, but it's up there i guess.

I met her down at Marylin's grave
Lookin' like an S & M slave
Drinkin' like a fool
With a prison tattoo on her cheek
Well I knew that we would never last
Cuz we were runnin' from our criminal past
But none of that mattered
I was high and she was flattered by me

I had wine and 2-gram lines
To get inside her head
There was no need for roses
I just layed her down in bed

(Chorus)
This ain't a love song
This is a f**k song
Don't have to sing along
This ain't a love song
It's just a f**k song
Let's do it all night long

She didn't wanna look in my eyes
As we barreled down Mulholland Drive
Lookin for a place to suck a little face and get high
Suzy wouldn't call it love
She was good just givin' it up
All she really wanted was a little rock and roll tonight

She said turn it up so f'ing loud
That I can't hear my mind
She bit down on the bedpost
And I watched Suzy grind

(Chorus)

thanks enele! i love chicago's more than a feeling. GREAT song.

go samo! sshhh, don't tell anybody, but i like 2 live crew too. it's the beat! the words are crazy, but i like too short too and dj quik, we won't go there with the lyrics :) i'm not alone. one of my fave singers, jenny lewis likes these crazy singers too.

ok, so for the motley crue song... this aint a love song. you are hilarious. i love motley crue. i haven't heard this song yet, but i'll have to listen now. i LOVE saints of los angeles. one of my favorite songs to rock out to when i was younger was dr. feelgood, but different innuendo there..... ;)

mystere - fire! what a sexy song!!!
i never listened to bad boys... it's more naughty than i thought too. now can't shake loose. that takes the cake. i love the tension in the song

Sorry Suzanne for my poor attempt at humor. (How about the scandalous Barry Manilow)? However Chicago is a guilty pleasure of mine. What about Def Leppard's "Pour a Little Sugar on Me" or ACDC's "You Shook Me All Night Long".

yeah "this ain't a love song" is from the new cd which "saints of los angeles" is feature on. sweet cd. def. worth buying. dr. feel good was a great track, but i love their first 2 cds best. "too fast for love" and "shout at the devil" are the best albums because they were young and hungry. not to mention all f'd up on drugs. too short is cool, and i can't blame ya for loving 2 live crew. they are the bomb, they are the only rap group that i would pay money to see live.
