What do you think of this new law that requires drivers to keep the phone away from their ear?

On GDLA this morning, I was riding with CHP Officer Blase Austin CHP as he ticketed a guy for breaking the new law.  The guy had a hands-free device sitting on his seat.

It sounds silly, but lots of people I've talked to say they've bought a hands-free device but don't want to bother with it.  I used one for the first time today and I felt it was more distracting than driving with the phone up to my ear.  My mind was on the conversation and I couldn't really hear the person on the other end, so I gave up and didn't take calls at all.  (Yeah, yeah, I know it's the best solution.)

Another annoyance is that the saying paired with this new law is, "keep both hands on the wheel!"  Yet you can still text, brush your hair, apply mascara, eat and do just about everything else and get away with it.

I scared myself the other day because I was texting while driving.  It was brief, my eyes were off the wheel long enough to drift toward the car in the next lane.  He didn't even honk, but I noticed how close my car came to bumping his new SUV.  I would've been toast!  It was a wake-up call & I don't text anymore behind the wheel.  Ok, let me come clean.  If I'm at a long light I'll check texts and USUALLY don't respond.  :)

I love to listen to music while driving, so I think I'm going to invest in an ipod hookup instead of a bluetooth.  The conversations can wait.

I always pull over to the side of a road if I have to talk, never while driving, or I go to my inbox and call them back. Ending up in an accident especially when cold and dressed poorly is a quick way to become a recipient of the official "Suzanne Marques Frozen Small Cleavage Award" and that is the last thing I want to win, my being an older chap and all...
By the way I created that award when you were standing out in the rain near mountains one morning, in a sexy dinner cocktail dress with no jacket and Steve mentioned you looked cold. Actually you were FREEZING to death and shaking worse than a bag of Jiffypop on the griddle.

my cousin text daily while driving, in my mind i wonder wtf? that's way worse then talking on th phone. yet i see so many do it. i read some where that many people are too reliant on certain devices like cell phones, internet, and i-pods. i heard that it causes us to lose sleep, and also makes us hear the phone ringing even though it's not, and causes us to check our phone every few minutes to see if we got any emails or messages, or missed calls. it's like a addiction.

personally the new las is a good one. i think phone calls can wait, and if you need to talk to someone, then i dont see why it's so hard to pull over for a minute.

I keep forgetting about the new law...Oops!

I automatically pick it up and start talking then I realize what I'm doing ( a couple dirty looks from other people in cars, does the trick)....it will take some getting use too.

I have On Star but everyone keeps calling my cell, I better spread the word!! I don't like those blue tooth things...you have to struggle to hear. I very much agree with the New Law...however what's the point if you can still text? That's even more dangerous...hellooo?
