Arizona senator John McCain is in the Southland. It's his first visit since securing the Republican nomination.

With all of the attention that Senators Clinton & Obama have been getting, I was surprised to discover the latest Gallup poll shows McCain in the lead. Maybe it's because Democrats' votes are split, there are several ways of breaking it down, but he just hasn't been in the news as much, so he's been kind of flying under the radar. (It's raining McCain! Have you seen that video yet? Once is enough, ha)

Senator McCain will be making a big push to promote his public image in just a few days. It's called the Service For America Tour. He'll be traveling to Virginia, where he went to high school and then to Florida where he trained as a Navy pilot.

Ok, enough of that, Let's get to the good stuff. The controversial stuff! The Iraq war.

I'm sure just reading that brings up a flurry of emotions one way or another. , Maybe both ways, which can be more frustrating at times.

Warning: another poll here. Don't shoot the messenger! Gallup found that regarding the war, American voters view McCain as the candidate most capable of handling the situation in Iraq.

54 to 40 percent over both Obama & Clinton! What do you think?

I agree, he's the best candidate to get us out with the least amount implosion . We created the unstable situation there so we must do what we can to leave that county as stable as possible,and off topic and let me qualify by saying I'm a happily married man totally in love with my wife and my Lord Jesus but YOU ARE DROP DEAD GORGEOUS WOW.Sorry if that sounds sexist but I've never been politically correct.

I'm surprised this wasn't a bigger story. Maybe because the media loves McCain so much.
But it make one wonder what the mainstream media would have done if Obama or Clinton had said this:

On his trip to the Middle East, presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain flubbed a key fact about the situation in Iraq. The Arizona senator said on several occasions that he was concerned that Iranians were training members of al-Qaida inside Iran and returning them to Iraq. He said it was a "well-known" fact and "common knowledge."

Apparently not.

Only when corrected by Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, who is traveling with him, did Mr. McCain apologize and say that "the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaida."

Iran is a Shiite country and would not likely be aiding al-Qaida, an insurgent group composed of Sunni Muslims.

Why is this repeated misidentification by Mr. McCain important? Because he is basing his campaign on the premise that he's the most experienced of the candidates by far in national security and foreign policy.

And because it's one more example of supporters of the Iraq war trying to use the name "al-Qaida" as a scare card. Will we next be hearing that al-Qaida has found safe haven in Iran?

Mr. McCain and his supporters would jump all over Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama if the Democrats made the same mistake. But it's Mr. McCain who has a page missing from his playbook.
