The National Rifle Association and Philadelphia DA Lynne Abraham are on the same side of the Philly gun law controversy - for different reasons.

Both want the recent actions championed by Mayor Nutter overturned as unconstitutional.

Nutter recently signed into law five new gun control measures. The problem is state law prohibits municipalities from doing that.

The legislative package includes bills that limit handgun purchases to one-a-month and require people to report lost-or-stolen guns immediately.

It always makes sense to create legislation that removes guns from the public. This way, it's much harder to keep criminals and politicians (pardon the rudundency) in check. Besides, there is no better way to create a huge black market in gun sales, driving up price and demand and increased gun violence. It will also help make the honest people much better targets. It's always good to rob, rape or kill somebody who is unarmed. It reduces the chance that the criminal might actually get hurt during the encounter. So yes, it always makes sense to keep the public unarmed.

Nice way to l;ead your 5 PM newscast "..stopping the police from making our streets safer."

That's not news coverage, that's pontificating, especially since there is no evidence that any of the laws that city council passed unlawfully have any impact on crime. In fact, there is evidence that laws which disarm the law abiding have the general effect of increasing crime.

Trying to punish the law-abiding gun owner has been continually disproved as an effective tactic to fight crime.

City council should address the cause of the crime in Philly, not a symptom.

Guns are not the problem. The problem is the moral breakdown of the country, the destruction of the family unit, the absence of responsible fathers in our cities, the lack of swift justice and adequate punishment fitting the crimes, the liberal trap of maintaining a victim mentality in which you are totally dependent on and look to government to solve all your personal problems and provide you an income, the lack of personal responsibility, and the lack of respect for human life - from the embryo to the comatose and elderly. If citizens have guns and use them to protect their property and family as necessary, that's a lot more effective than taking them away and having to rely on government to protect you. They're already failing at this. Taking guns away isn't going to make it any better. In fact, it will most likley get worse when criminals don't have to worry about a potential victim having a gun and using it.

How often do you hear of a criminal being caught in the act and counteracted because of a potential victim having a handgun? The answer: not very often.

GUNS ARE NOT A GOOD THING, REPUBS! Are you guys serious, or are you intentionally sounding ridiculous? Should we all just go get guns and take the law into our own hands? What kind of so-called "civilized" society is that?

And to answer your question about socialized government, it is the government's responsibility to ensure the well being of its consitituents. It's not like these things are financing luxuries, but things like food and healthcare, the basics of life should be guaranteed. It is morally wrong to have the very rich continue to get richer while the poor starve to death. Conservative policies are so very selfish... if we were all Liberal, the world would be a better place. God forbid you were to be sued or become a victim of a serious accident and could not afford the medical coverage. You would then need the government to step in and ensure your well being. That is the unfortunate part with capitalism, in order for it to work, the rich will always get richer and the poor will get poorer. You have to pretty much think of schemes to get people to pay for products or services they did not receive. I personally believe that every person should have a decent quality of life, even if that means the basics of education, healthcare, and food.
On the flip side... I'm not naive and am well aware that issues like welfare fraud do exist and these so-called "disabled" people collecting disability when in reality they could probably work. But it is not fair to punish the percentage who actually rely on these things (such as the elderly). Welfare reform programs like "welfare-to-work" are in place to help curb this problem. Everyone should be required to work and contribute to society including to benefit from such government programs. (Unless they are really disabled or retired) In my opinio

*Cut off from my previous post* ...In my opinion, to further prevent welfare abuse, one should be limited to these services for a maximum of 10 years in a lifetime per social security number. But to see these programs disappear? Absolutely NOT! The governemt has an obligation to look after the poor and the sick! If not, why have government? We could all go get guns and make our own laws as we go along! (Note the sarcasm in my previous sentence!)

Who said guns were a good thing?? The fact is that they exist, and our founding fathers determined it best that every citizen have the right to own one if they so choose. Number 1, it's a deterrent to dictators and kings taking over. Number 2, it's a deterrent to crime if guns are not just in the hands of criminals. They can and will get them, legal or not.

Capitalism and conservatism are nothing like you describe. That's what the media tells you they are. Compared to the rest of the world, over 90% of Americans are RICH! So, don't tell me capitalism is selfish, makes only the rich richer and takes advantage of the poor and disabled. The fact is that the poorest Americans are richer than more than half of the rest of the world. The poorest Americans almost all have at least one car, one TV, one Pc, one cell phone, a refrigerator and heat. Many in the rest of the world can't say that.

Capitalism gives people the opportunity to succeed and not to depend upon government, which is a good thing. The fact is that the overall standard of living of EVERY American citizen has improved in the past 50 years, while few other nations in the world can make that claim. If socialism and communism were so wonderful, people wouldn't be risking their lives to get here and stay here, both legally and illegally. Liberals are the selfish ones, in reality, as they want everyone to have the same amount regardless of how hard one works or how much risk a person will take in their business. There would be no incentive to do better or to invent or to improve things if the reward for that was just taken from them and given to someone else. The fact is, those who are needy in this country are taken care of well by a combination of government, social and religious programs - not perfectly, but they are taken care of. Unfortunately, the worst provider of social services and the effecient use of tax dollars to help those in need is the gover

government itself. It would be better off to collect tax dollars and turn them over to a private firm to manage. The level of care and provision for the needy would be vastly improved and increased.

You need to travel a bit. If you did, you would see such suffering you could not believe that would make anything you are complaining about in America pale in comparison. We can always do better, but socialism/communism is not the answer. Capitalism is by no means perfect. But it's the best the world has seen so far. You should live in Scandanivia or in China for a year under their form of governing and socialism/communism. Then come back and tell us nasy conservative capitalists if you feel the same way. Perhaps you will, but I doubt it.

To be sure, there is a place in America for charity and social assistance. The problem is that too many folks are on the dole and have no ambition to frre themselves from the easy life. Nowhere in the US Constitution does it say that our government has an obligation to be a welfare state. If I'm wrong, please let me know. It does however, clearly state the right to bare arms. End of discussion. If you look (onehottamale) you will see in every country/state that has restricted the public from guns, crime has risen DRAMATICALLY. Look back in history......some of the most tyrannical governments have implemented gun control before commiting their atrocities.
