I can't *believe* it's been more than a month since I typed my last entry.... time just keeps flying by! This morning on our show, I interviewed Philadelphia Police Comissioner Sylvester Johnson. He's taken some heat these days with all of the violence taking place in our city... but just like everyone else-- he too is working around the clock to combat the problem. As a journalist, it's so frustrating to report on violent crimes time and time again, month after month.... it just seems like everyone is searching for a solution. From police, to volunteer organzations, to churches across the city--- so many people are trying to help.

I sure hope something starts to work.... and soon. I'd love to have a morning newscast without talking about violence.... and not because we're not reporting it... but because it was just a "peaceful" day in the city. Gosh-- that would be great. What do you think?  Can it happen? Will it happen?

See you in the morning. :)

Hey Sheinelle! Welcome back to the blogs!

It seems that everyone (police, mayor, community leaders, etc.) has a solution to the violence in the city, however, it doesn't seem that much is being done. I don't feel that the mayor, police or communities themselves are doing enough to combat this problem. What is the solution? I really don't know. It's a problem that seems to be escalating with no slowdown in the near future.

Once that violence creeps into Center City, Chestnut Hill, Society Hill, Olde City, Rittenhouse Square, etc, (you get the point) you will see something done immediately. Because the victims and perpetrators are largely African Americans from poorer neighborhoods, there is a "look the other way" mentality among those people in leadership.

I read somewhere recently that in spite of the negative press Philadelphia gets in the national media regarding this violence, there is an increase in tourism to the city. THis just shows that as long as it's not happening in those areas that would affect a certain group of people, most people don't care.

In closing, I wish I could get up and watch your broadcast and see news other than who and how many got murdered the night before. As an anchor, I'm sure you're frustrated. I would be too. Also, I wish the next mayor has a comprehensive plan to get this under control. But it's not going to take just him to solve this problem. It has to a community effort...a citywide effort.

Hey Shenielle,

As long as the 'stop snitchin' mentality exists in the inner city, there will always be high levels of crime in those areas. It's up to the residents to get fed up and start turning in the bad guys, otherwise, all the prayer vigils, rallies, task forces, etc. won't accomplish anything.

I run a non-profit youth organization called City Youth Association in Logan-Olney-Fernrock section of Philly. We barely get city help at all. We serve over 500 at risk kids. By using football, cheerleading, basketall drum line, baseball as an draw for the kids. We offer mentoring. We can’t get lights for our football field. We can’t get into a school to use the gym for our other programs. The Chearashore Rec.center ( where we play at )..has come a frequent spot for drug use since the adult basketball league started there! We have ask the city for help! But know one hears us! We are in the community! Trying to help…but the city turns their back on us! We are doing what we can in this war against crime! But we can only do some much with out the cities help!

Until the culture changes, there's not much anyone can do. When there are six murders in one weekend with dozens of witnesses who won't come forward, what do you expect? Until this society begins to respect life again and abide by some long-held moral absolutes, there is little government or the police can do. I also think the lack of faithful fathers and good male role models also contributes greatly to the problem in the city. I'm not saying there aren't any, but it's increasingly rare. We as a society used to value others at least as much as self, if not more. Today we value me, myself and I over everything and everyone else. And when that happens, this is what you get.

Sheinelle,
may I say what a fantastic job you are doing and a vibrant addition to the My Fox 29 family.
I for one will miss Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson, I'm some what disappointed because most people were screaming for a people Police Commissioner. Now, that we had one it seams to me that we showed our appreciation with an increased in deaths, robberies and assaults. This is a time in most of our lives when we should be working with him "not against him". I did Community work for over 20 years and live in the same home for 33 years. I fly my flag everyday on my home but due to my poor vision and author I can do very little. I love the great Dr. king and what he stood for representing me. I was one of them that marched the Girard College wall, spit on and chased by motor bikes, horses and now everyone goes to that college. It hurt me so bad to see people take two steps backwards with all this hate and killing of each other. When we strived so hard to take these little steps forward. Sheinelle, I salute people like Dr. Cosby and others who are speaking from the guts. Yes, even Celebrities came forth all just to say; "People..My People…Our People what you are doing is stupid, ugly and just wrong. Most of all to stop blaming it on the guns. Guns been here from the beginning of time. Guns been here when most of us were water hosed, dogs, spit, horses, nightsticks, mace and some of us were even hung. But, "guess what"! Fewer guns, stones, knives and stick were used then. Sheinelle, people just need to stop making excuses because most allowed their valu

Sheinelle, people just need to stop making excuses because most allowed their value as person to be compromised. We as society "MUST" comb our streets and neighborhoods reaching out some how to those young homestead parents. A lot of young folks are out there trying to get an understanding on how to homestead, how to raise a family, how to get along with their neighbors. Look, tougher measures must take place with business that allow people to use it as a hangout, homes in our neighborhood that is causing a disturbance constantly, stronger DHS involvement and steering programs for families, Department of health stronger enforcement on curtailing drug use in our city. Our Mayor John Street and others have started several programs to reach out with activating some outreach programs and may clergy's are working hard pushing the message. Sheinelle I'm partly blind it took my one hour to type this to you but I didn't mine. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson is one of the best and I do which him the very best. I hope a wonderful township grab him where he can work as an consultant when he retires. Please, check out my suggestion on my blog that I submitted many months ago about his very problem.

Again, Great Job,~ go-girl!

It's a shame more haven't listened to Dr. Cosby and taken action based on what he has said.
