I don't think the rest of the Country realizes just how big a flood there was in Iowa.  These pictures certainly reveal some of it.

Where are the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for help
In restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where's the media asking the tough questions about why the federal government hasn't solved the problem?

Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees that failed in  Des Moines?

When will we hear Governor Chet Culver
say that he wants to rebuild a 'vanilla' Iowa ,
because that's the way God wants it?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of cannibalism?

Is there really  that big a difference between  the people of Iowa and the people of  New Orleans?

Well, my family is from Iowa, so it's fair to say that I've spent a lot of time there.

I also spent some time in pre-Katrina New Orleans.

The people in New Orleans were trained by the government to be dependant on entitlements. They had no idea how to fend for themselves, because the entitlement checks were always there to satisfy their needs.

The people in Iowa have had to take care of themselves their entire lives, so when tragedy struck, they knew that they had to take some personal responsibility, rather than wait for the government to come and save them.

This comparison is a perfect argument for the end of the entitlement programs, we have created entire generations of nearly worthless human beings, people incapable of getting off of the couch and moving to safety when they are told to.

I wonder how many Iowans blamed "the black man" for their flood. I'm guessing not many.

Dude, chill the fsck out, that's just the nature of the news. We've just grown accustomed to this kind of hell. Is it really necessary to turn every insignificant triviality into a national affair? I understand that the conditions were exaggerated in New Orleans as well, but two wrongs do not make a right.

By the way, thanks for that last condescending "you decide" bit, it's empowering. I'd almost forgotten I had the capacity for critical thinking. Great job there, Mom.

Ummmmm, thanks for dropping by, "Sin". Glad to help. Next time bring donuts.

Speaking of "insignificant"....what's your problem sinister? Mom has a great post here with a lot of valid questions. And gj has some great points too (as usual). Your post however, is a big steaming load of crap! I wonder about your capacity for ANY kind of thinking - "Dude". BTW - It's the beginning of the month...don't forget about your gov't check that's sitting in your mailbox right about now.

I never said the post yielded no validity, I'm just saying she's exaggerating. Besides, if you think she's the first person to have said these sorts of things, I suggest start reading actual news rather than just inflating the egos of Fox News bloggers.

BTW LOLOLOLO-- I'm sixteen (I believe this also justifies my use of the word "dude," if it warranted justification in the first place), no unemployment checks for me. I have a job. Just because I disagree with someone who valiantly proclaims a widely "conservative" belief does not mean I oppose them. If you're so intent on classifying me, read my blog.
Or not.

That isn't what you said and that isn't how you said it, "Sin", or I would have responded in kind. You were snarky and critical. I don't believe that you are 16, actually, but for the record, if you are, you are well spoken. But your choice of initial tactics does indicate immaturity. I wouldn't be throwing out commentary about the egos of Fox News Bloggers- POT KETTLE BLACK. And of course it's not original in idea, it's just my interest- none of this stuff is really original. Didn't I see you on the pot thread? I don't believe there was exaggeration- that's what makes me so sad. The situation in N.O. was like in a third world country. To what do YOU attribute the difference? There are plenty of blacks in Iowa's cities- so don't tell me bigotry- I won't buy it. But if you have something specific to say, some numbers, facts, etc-, even rhetoric, (please leave out the cursing on my blog at my visitors)- share them. BTW- My final statement was clearly a tongue-in-cheek editorial comment. I suppose it would sound condescending if you don't agree, but that was sort of my point. It's a blog, Dude!

Thanks, Diz. Whether this guy is 16 or 60, he certainly has an arrogant manner, well known in those who think they know LOTS more than everyone else. Poor us- living in ignorance. He may never grow up- many don't.

I believe he's very young. Just a punk kid, bagging groceries, and looking to plug his own lonely blog with zero responses. Then he copied his own gibberish and stuck it on my blog. There may be time, a little hope, for this kid to get a clue..."or not".

Diz, you're making me blush. Flattery will get you everywhere, darlin'.

You said it, Mom. Snarky. I have a different word, but MyFox always EDITS it. I still say "dude" as well, though, and I'm 42 (I look younger, though, so I get away with it...I think).

Making friends fast, eh Sister? Look dude, when I was 16, I also knew everything. Your sneering contempt for the dialogue on these pages is unwarranted. I have had intelligent discussions with people who have vastly different political, social, and ideological viewpoints than my own. I have learned a great deal from them. The key is to be polite.

I would hardly call the floods an "insignificant triviality", perhaps you should do some more research on the subject before attempting to discuss it intelligently.

Hi, GI, Diz. Yes, Sis is very young, I agree, now that I re-read the post. Not stupid, but very young. Words of wisdom, GI- I'll bet you look young, like our Ms. Diz! I am around teenagers all the time, too- I have probably picked up more from them than they have from me! It concerns me a little that Sis is blogging at 1AM at 16 years old. Be careful, OK, seriously? We're harmless- others aren't.

Flattery will get me everywhere gj? That's great news, because I have NOTHING but compliments and applause for you and Mom. Sinister could take some notes and learn a lot from you two, as I have.

One last thing...why is he calling you "Mom"? I think he/she has been around for a while, and has created a new name for him/her self, as of 3 days ago. Just a thought....doesn't really matter, other than it's really childish.

You know, I thought the same thing- that's why I called him "Sin" and "Sis". And why was he even here- this blog hasn't been highlighted or anything. Yes, it's someone we know. Trolls are so weird- can you imagine being THAT needy? I talked to him like a Mom on his blog, and I was sincere- if it isn't a fake persona, the kid needs a life.

Jesus, I've been off for what, twelve hours? Christ.

I frequent forums and chats, so excuse me if my casual (read: impolite, crude, boorish, etc [whatever floats your flooded Iowa boat]) manner seems unusual as I most likely don't give it a second thought. I assume everyone else lurks as much as I do (and if that constitutes trolling I must say that that sucks for me), but I guess that's pretty stupid of me since the demographic is a lot less varied here than it is on most of the internet and I guess you might not be familiar with the customs of itnerbutt. Typing out "Raysmom" seemed pretty stupid, and I figured it made more sense to call you Mom than Ray, right? maybe I should've called you Aysmo or OM NOM NOM?

I have been here before, but never under false pretenses. I'm not that much of a tool. I never actually registered before now, because I usually get bored with everyone saying the exact same things OVER AND OVER and copying articles from the Denver Post pretending to be making some sort of political statement. I respect you for not doing that (plus, your writing is coherent and I can read it without feeling like my IQ has gone down five points afterward), which is more than I can say about your fanboys (and virtually everyone else on this site).

Anyway, our generation may suck considerably, but you seem to underestimate more than a few of us. I know kids years younger than me who make me feel terrible about my speech pattern and meager vocabulary. I got most of this stuff from The Simpsons, the internet and video games.

Post limit.

I don't understand how it's hypocritical to have an ego of epic proportions and then insult another person's attempts at inflating someone else's. Maybe that's just me.

I realize that self-righteous pretention can be a literary device (obviously), but that doesn't make it any less pretentious. If it was supposed to be satire, I guess it was over my head.

Like I said, I attribute the difference to the nature of the news and media. Stuff just doesn't seem as sensational the second time around. Everything doesn't have to be so complicated.

I bet nobody will read that.
Oh well.

I read it. You are welcome to call me Mom, if you like- I am just not accustomed to young people behaving and speaking to adults the way you do. I won't insult you- please have the maturity to do the same for me if you think this venue is appropriate for you. I also think you are too smart to be using such...base language. People would take you more seriously without it. No insult intended.

Have you read my other blogs? Especially about Social Security? I also left you a detailed answer on Diz's blog about "You're a Dem If" about the validity of my description of the liberal left policies in this country today, if you are interested. I would also recommend Marilyn's blog- she has some very good info about Congress, the liberal and conservative agendas in this country, etc.

This was more of a social statement for me- I don't do many- I was just amazed at the differences. I think you are smart enough to move away from these social blogs and get into the meatier stuff if you choose to do so.

BTW- It IS complicated. It's more than just "old news". It's a real indicator of the sympathies of liberal camera hogs and social program lifers, and a working society where it just isn't "sexy" to be "an activist". It also highlights what a society built on subsidization does to itself in times of stress. You may not agree, but I believe strongly that you will always get more of whatever you subsidize. You want more O&G production? Subsidize it. You want more exports? Subsidize them. You want more people at the public trough? Subsidize them. If you want less of something, tax it. It's just the facts.

thank you ray's mom for the pix and thoughts. im not sure how much time these people had to pack and evacuate but think watching the new orleans folks not running for their lives when they saw katrina spanned the entire of gulf of mexico was so shocking to everyone.

the weather channel gave coverage to this iowa flood -- maybe the lack of BLEEP houses in iowa gave it less importance than other wise it might have.
