ok, so ive always been dying to know...can you reporters please answer this question...what type of schedule do you work? how do you get your stories? it looks as if it is a stressful job, even if you're doing one of those "feel good" stories like Gerald Kolpan. But I've always wanted to know what is a "typical" (if that word is even in your vocabulary to describe it) day for you. This question mainly goes out to the general assignment ones like Julie Kim, Steve Keeley, and Joyce Evans. So can any of you give you me an answer? Some how, i think Julie would be the first to give me one because i always see her posts on here. HI JULIE!

ps. your labrador is adorable! I want one being as though me and my friend just moved in a new house but unfortunately, she doesn't want a big dog. :(

Great questions! I'd be interested in hearing what they have to say too... Rachel, what is a typical day like for you?

Hey RachelRegina....
People are always fascinated by the hours we work, especially at Good Day, because they're so weird. I wake up at 2 am...for many of my colleages, it's even earlier.
There's a lot of preparation before the show starts at 5 am, ending at 9. But the work day isn't over. We have meetings, and then we get ready for First News at 11. I usually leave the building around noon or 12:30. Things change, though, in cases of breaking news and far away locations. And we also do outside appearances at events and such. You gotta love it.....

That was probably too much information for you, but thanks for asking!

Hi Sue! thanks for answering my question! good lord , 2 am? EARLIER than that? Im guessing that's for the general assignment reporters like Julie Kim and Steve Keeley, right? Wow, and then you have meetings......so how do you guys look so smiley in the morning? I'm guessing you "turn it on, turn it off" right lol. Thanks Sue and no it wasn't too much info, lol. I'm sure a lot of people like to know what goes on behind the scenes.

Hi Rachel,

I'll try to answer your question the best I can. A typical day is pretty atypical :p I work swing shift 11a-7p some days and nightside (2pm-11p) on other days. As Sue mentioned, they're not banker hours and when news breaks or something major happens, I often stay late.

My typical day looks like this: I wake up, walk my big monster dog and then slurp my coffee and read newspapers online to get a feel for what's happening that day. Also, the smaller newspapers provide great human interest stories that might get missed in this very large town. We try to get to everywhere but it is an impossibility. When I get into work, I try to bash the phones a bit to see if any people I've made contact with, police, fire, community groups have anything out of the ordinary going on. We have an editorial meeting and that's when we throw all our ideas out and the head honchos decide what they like. Imagine throwing spaghetti on the wall. It's kind of the same thing.

The photographer and I hit the road on our assigned story. Sometimes, it's smooth sailing, other times it's kind of like pulling out your own wisdom teeth. Sometimes things don't work out, an interview falls through, the story isn't what we originally thought and then you have to work another story. On the tougher days, I'll have worked on anywhere between 3-5 different story ideas. That gets frustrating. But then you just buck up, doll up for the 10pm and it's all done and then I get to do it all over again the next day!!!

I do like that about this job because it varies so much from day to day. It can be s

PART 2!! RAN OUT OF SPACE!
I do like that about this job because it varies so much from day to day. It can be stressful because I always want to do a good job and do the story justice. Deadlines can be a headache as well.

I hope this answered your questions. Let me know if you have any more. I have become quite a blogging fiend!

As for my choco lab, Charlie - he's a great big goofball. I love him. Will your friend go for a small dog? I was never a fan of small dogs until a friend of mine got one -- he's really cute!!1

JULE!!!! im sooooooooooooooooo glad you finally got around to emailing! Sue did an excellent job answering my question. and yeah i think you are a blogging friend, lol! that's why i wanted to you to answer my question.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! your days are unpredictable and then they are. ive always wondered how do you guys get your stories, you know? Now you said you work 3-5 different stories? So i have a few more questions:

are you and the other reporters in competition for stories as well and is it um..."friendly?"

Is it kind of hard to come up with new stories?

What happens if you don't come up with a story or at least with a "good" story according to the big cheese?

how do you go about interviewing people? do you just go up to them and say, "Hey, I'm Julie Kim, etc., can i talk to you?" or do you run after them, lol!

but what i like about your job is that it's just that....it doesnt get boring and not your typical 9 to 5 (whatever that is, LOL!)

Ok, totally off the sub, but your dog, Charlie is adorable! My neighbor has a black lab and hes HUGE! get this...he's only 1 or 2 years old and he's big! he's adorable and i love big dogs like you---labs, golden retrivers, and of course GREAT DANES, lol! im not particular of small dogs, but if i do get one i want a pomeranian. but we were looking at some other small dogs---dachsunds, bassett hounds, and beagles. we all agreed on a british bulldog. they are cute, but i love big dogs.like i said im gonna convince her to get one.

Hi Rachel,

There are slow days in news and there are days when there is a TON to cover. It kind of seems to go in cycles. I find that enterprising fresh story ideas can be difficult. There are days when a reporter or two doesn't have a story to work on. That's frustrating because you feel like you're waiting and wasting your time. You keep looking, keep calling around to other police and cities to see if anything's going on. Oftentimes, there will be a breaker and then we go running pell mell to see if it's newsworthy. Basically, you just keep on digging and looking. But yes, there have been days when I don't make air.

I don't think there's competition between reporters at FOX. I think we all want to do a good job. Sure, there are times when I'm like "I wish I had so and so's story" but because so much happens, I know there will always be a story I'd like to be covering in the future.

Competition in this market with the other stations, for the most part seems rather friendly. Yes, there absolutely is a competitive edge to it all but I feel that you can be professional and nice or at least civil about it at the same time. Saying that, there are a few who don't follow those guidelines and hey, that's they're choice, you can't like everybody and you certainly can't be friends with everybody and based on certain behavior, would you really want to be? Ok let me sheath those claws, lol!!!

As for interviewing people. It depends on the situation. When there's been a great tragedy for a family, I approach them without cameras and try to talk to them first. I don't believ

PART 2 AGAIN!!

I don't believe in treating people like walking soundbites or a homework project that needs to be finished. I try to treat people as humanely as possible. As for criminals and other baddies, sure, I'll run after them and stick a mic in their face.

Other times, when we need opinions on weather, shopping or some controversial topic, we solicit interviews or MOS - short for Man on the Street. That's usually when I go up to people and introduce myself. That can be difficult because a lot of people are really camera shy! Or, others often have bad opinions about the media and don't want to talk.

It's not as glamorous as it seems. I liken it to a hotdog, sometimes you just don't want to know what goes into it, you know what I mean? And it's funny sometimes because it's like, whew all that for 2 minutes of air time!!!

I do like what I do alot. It is always what I have wanted to do, tell stories, inform people. I covered an organization recently who had a handwritten poster up, on why people get into journalism or media. Some of the answers they put up were "to be on tv or to be famous" or "to push their own political agenda." I just shake my head because it makes me think, wow people really think we are shallow scum. I felt like saying something to them but I don't know what would have convinced them otherwise.

hi Julie. thanks so much for answering all my questions. you broke them all down for me. i think that being a reporter is an excellent job. you guys do a lot of hard work. i myself wanted to be one when i was younger. i met joyce evans in 1994. i was in the fourth grade and she came up to my school. she was telling me about all the people she met, etc.

im also quite sure it's not a glamorous job, as is any other job and the media has such a bad rep for switching peoples words around.

lol i like the MOS thing you were talking about. i think i would go on air if one of you interviewed me, lol. i love the camera! :)

Lol at the shallow scum! yeah, there will always be a stereotype about media. girl dont even worry about it. if all else fails you can sick Charlie on them LOL! :) j/k nah, he's too adorable for that!

Well Julie, thank you so much for dissecting my questions. you're a great reporter as is the whole crew and keep up the great work! :)
