Someone call Al Gore!  The ice caps on Mars on melting!  (I'm sure they'll find a way to blame the Bush administration.)  I just read an article that explains how the ice caps on the south pole of Mars have been diminishing over the last three summers.  Gee could it be that a long-term increase in solar irradiance is causing climate changes and not man?  That's what the head of the St. Petersburg's Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia thinks.  In fact, he believes that changes in the sun's heat output can account for almost all the climate changes we see on both planets.  Mars and Earth, for instance, have experienced periodic ice ages throughout their histories.
"Man-made greenhouse warming has made a small contribution to the warming seen on Earth in recent years, but it cannot compete with the increase in solar irradiance."
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, humans are very conceited to think they have that big of an impact in the "grand scheme" of things.

I am selling Martian Carbon Offsets. Only $200.00 per cu/tn. Don't let Mars fall prey to the same fate as the Earth! Call your local representative and let them know we need to do something NOW. Leo Dicaprio has alredy pledged to "make a martian difference"....won't you?

Well said professor, who are we to think we have the power to change the face of the earth. A nuclear war could happen, humans wiped off the face of the earth and ya know what, the earth would produce life. We can only hurt ourselves, not the earth or the environment. Get off your horses people and practice a little more humility.

A few days ago ProfessorChaos suggested that volcanoes and nature itself generated more greenhouse gasses that mankind, as if that absolved us from any responsibility whatsoever. Now he's on about the sun's increased output, which, again, does nothing to make our own contribution to the problem go away. The guys at Duke University who published their solar activity findings in 2005 determined that the sun could be contributing 10-30% to global warming, which still makes it a minority player.

All these factors are additive. Mankind likely isn't the sole cause of the warming. So what? It hardly means that we should dodge the part we are responsible for.

Then again, why act responsibly when we can simply play politics and blame somebody else?

You're making my point for me Barlennan. There are so many other causes for this other than humans. Yet the media and Hollywood want to get on their sopaboxes and say it's our fault and we can change things. The point is that this is just part of the natural evolution. If you want to make yourself feel better by having a compost barrel or driving a hybrid or whatever. Go right ahead. Just stay out of my face. If the grand scheme involves wiping out the human race, there's nothing we can do to stop it. The dinosaurs were wiped out and the earth kept turning and life kept evolving.

I don't think anyone is questioning whether the world will still be spinning, and there's little doubt that it'd take some pretty harsh conditions to wipe out all life on earth --- witness the bacteria that thrive near volcanic vents deep in the ocean. But some people do care about the quality of the world left to their children and grandchildren, and it's in the nature of such people to act responsibly given the best information available at the time.

Can we make a difference on a global scale? Perhaps, perhaps not. But one thing is certain: we have no chance of affecting change if we never even bother to try.
