Well, here we go again.  For a few weeks, the trend had dropped off, but starting two weeks ago, the number of vehicles in the HOV lane that had more than one person in it (or an alternative fuel plate) dropped considerably!

In the last 5 weekdays, I have counted the following totals:

Single occupant in car:       52

Multiple occupants in car:  20

Alternative fuel plates:         6

These are the numbers of vehicles that passed me while driving North on I-17 between 0545 and 0645!  I don't even look in the Southbound lanes, and I only count the cars that pass me while I am doing approximately the speed limit.  These numbers include cars that pass the vehicle in the #1 lane and get back in the regular lane, the cars that fly (literally) in excess of 10 mph over the limit, and the normal slugs that think if they aren't turning off at this exit, they need to be in the farthest lane from the exit.

Don't even get me started on the ones that dive from the HOV lane to the exit ramp in under 5 car lengths!

DPS, Phoenix PD, MCSO and any other LEO should be especially watchful.  I know the Southbound lanes are full of violators and accidents resulting from those violations, but maybe you guys can split the shift and half roll North and the rest roll South!

I think you should watch what's in front of you not what's in the HOV lanes. It only takes a second for an accident to happen and you sound like your waiting for one to happen to you. I do have a couple of questions though. Why are you driving alone? And why are you worried about what other people do when it doesn't harm you in any way shape or form? Haven't you ever heard that old saying? Stay in your yard and leave my yard to me. Good luck out there motoring.

My husband drives a city bus. The Rapids that drive in those lanes should have a live camera on front of the bus so that this situation could be monitered. What do you think?

Yes, spice, they should.

What's wrong RDJ? Am I picking on your style of driving?

If I'm driving a hearse and have a body in the back can I use the HOV lane?

Why not? I see trucks with lawn mowers and the undocumented workers sitting with them in those lanes!

No, actually I only use the HOV lane when someone else is in my car. And that's most of the time. Unlike you who drives alone complaining that you can't use it because you don't carpool. I do drive over the speed limit. It's not illegal unless you get caught. By the way I haven't been caught. How bout you? I drive a sports car so I can dive in 3 car lengths if I need to. Look out for us speeders that dive out of the carpool lane. I just hope when you do the speed limit you are in the right lane except to pass or you too are in jeopardy of breaking a law. And the law was changed to allow commercial vehicles in the HOV lane, including trucks with illegals in them. More then two is more then two. The left lane is for passing not going the speed limit. So I guess the bottom line is, shite or get off the pot.

PhxDragon, I've often wondered this myself, but just figured it's one of the many laws that aren't being enforced so not much I can do about it. One needs to understand that in society there's always that percentage of folks that feel as though there are certain laws that don't pertain to them, and they can do as they wish.

Also, contrary to wishful thinking, there is no such lane designation as a "fast lane." Speed limits are the same in all lanes. If for whatever reason you're going below the speed limit you should stay to the right.

retnjcop, typical jersey sarcasim, "what exit"
Any way, what about the weekends when there is no minimum but people insist on being in the HOV lane going less then the speed limit.

jteamaz: You weren't at the training I was at when a DPS officer said anyone doing the speed limit in the left lane needs to be moving over as soon as another car comes up on it. This impedes traffic and will have a chain effect in every lane. He also said that personally he thinks anyone that won't get out of the "fast lane" should be cited. He also said he will flash his lights at them and go as far as ride their bumper. This is from a Cop. On any given interstate the signs are everywhere. SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS. One other thing. The cameras on the Loop 101 snap pictures when you go 11 miles over the speed limit. That sets a precedence that 10 over is not speeding. Therefore you should be able to go 10 miles over the speed limit throughout the State of Arizona on the Interstates. I believe you can win in court on this precedence alone.

RD, I understand what you're saying. But, my brother-in-law is a DPS Officer, we've talked about this many times. Slow Traffic Keep Right is meant to keep those that are under posted speed limits out of the way, whether they're trucks or otherwise. I spoke with Don about your response and he says that if in fact a DPS officer told you this, he is clearly in the wrong. At no time is it legal to exceed posted limits, and again, speed limits are the same in all lanes, there is no "fast" or "high speed" lane. Also, if he rides someones bumper or even flashes his lights, that also puts him in the wrong, and he himself could be cited. As far as a "grace" speed, that varies with each officer, that doesn't mean that 10 over is OK. The city of Scottsdale picked 10 over so it wouldn't look petty. I agree with you completely that folks traveling in the left lane should do their best to stay out of the way, especially if they're under the speed limit. I myself don't use it because I can't afford to get caught, being the holder of a CDL. Just because so many do it doesn't make it right. Being cited for impeding traffic while doing the speed limit would not hold up in court, and would be thrown out strictly on it's merit, or lack thereof. Not trying to be argumentative, but this is a huge misconception on the motoring public's part. Bad driving habits don't trump the law, even if many are doing it.

RD, Don directed me to the DPS website, and this is directly from the section about Aggressive Driving:

• Aggressive driving is defined as a progression of unlawful driving actions such as:
speeding -- exceeding the posted limit or driving too fast for conditions;
improper or excessive lane changing: failing to signal intent, failing to see that movement can be made safely, or
improper passing -- failing to signal intent, using an emergency lane to pass, or passing on the shoulder.

• The posted speed limit is a law that applies to all traffic lanes. Technically speaking, there is no fast lane or slow lane. In at least 21 states, slower traffic is expected to keep right, except for emergency vehicles, which are permitted to exceed the posted speed limit, but only when their lights and sirens are on. In some states, laws specify "keep right except to pass."

Hope that helps clear up some of the misconception....

SOV lanes are just another leftist aka progressive treehuger bs thing to force Americans to stop driving cars.
SOV lanes should be lanes should be lanes were the access is limited to every 10 to 15 mile intervals. Other word SOV lanes should be called express lanes.

DMG, San Antonio has done that, and those lanes do not even exit at major interchanges! You have to know where you are going (that excludes 40% of the I-17 drivers) and you have to know where you are (and there goes RDJ).

The limited access HOV lanes would improve things greatly! Too bad there are so many "me" drivers around and whining about needing to get somewhere. The law would die on the Governor's desk just like the one for all trucks with trailers to remain in the right two lanes on any multi-lane interstate a few years ago.

SOV lanes were forced on Americans by the leftist aka progressive treehugers. This was done by withholding tax money paid by Americans to build roads. American cities were told they would not get federal money to build freeways if they did not include SOV lanes.

PhxDragon: I can drive blind folded in this city and I'd still know where I'm at and or going. Why should I slow down to exit. If there is an opening and I feel it's safe to dive over then I will do it. I use my turn signal when I do it. Hell I even stay in a lane for a second before I change again. All by the law. I just do it faster because my reflexes are such that I can. As for DMG's comments it's more right wing nut job BS.

I don't have any misconceptions jteamaz. I didn't say the cop I talked to said it was OK, he was just speaking as a regular guy. I know what the laws are. I've been driving long enough to know every law on the books. Some of them aren't enforceable, but they try anyway. I can say in my 30+ years of driving I haven't been cited for any moving violations. I have an uncanny sense of smell and I can smell bacon a mile away. But thanks for trying to enlighten.

What is wrong Right Wing Conservative Christian aka fairytale believer, did I hit it on the head with you? All you do is spew Right Wing Propaganda in EVERY post. You have the SAME old boring and tiring line with the "leftist aka progressive treehuger"(sic). Get a new angle, that one has been drivin hard and put away wet by you. If you were lost in the woods what would you do since you're afraid of tree hugging? Oh and as you can see there are two g's. You could at least get that right since you use it in EVERY worn out boring post of yours.

What is wrong leftist aka progressive treehugger RDJVZ you mad at the world because no one believe the leftist aka progressive treehugger lie of global warming.
SOV lanes were forced on Arizona by the leftist aka progressive treehugger epa.
The planet is 6 billion years old. It has gone through many climate changes in it’s life time.
Forcing Americans to car pool is not going to stop natural global warming.

Where did I say I believed in global warming? Find it then get back to me. HOV lanes were put on the interstates to stop some of the congestion which does cause more pollution. And a way to pay back the people who actually carpool. Anyone with a pea sized brain knows that when a car idles it emits more pollution. This was scientifically proven. Maybe you've forgotten that. What's wrong DMG can't find anyone that will share a ride with your Right Wing Conservative butt? DEEDEEDEE!!!
