Should Michigan and Florida's 313 delegates now be allowed to sit?

No. Not without re-caucus at the expense of the Democratic Party.

Though I am a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton, I am disappointed to learn that she wants (now) to include Michigan and Florida's delegates. Yes, I am clearly hopeful that she will win and become our next president. However, the Democratic Party was the entity that disallowed (penalized) Michigan and Florida by disallowing their 313 delegates to sit because they held their caucuses early. It was not a personal decision on her part to further her campaign.

I am hopeful that she, like Barack Obama, will agree to do as the Democratic Party has agreed, forget that the delegates exist (sorry delegates) and either re-caucus at the Party’s expense or just let those delegates go and get on with running a good, clean campaign as before - even if it means neither candidate will have the required delegates to secure their nomination by the Democratic Party.

Mr. Kolpan asked what we might 'invent' if given the chance. What follows is not so much an invention as just an idea I wanted to share...here goes:

Venice, Italy

Instead of building and re-building New Orleans, why don't we intentionally build it to be a water city? I mean, Venice wasn't built to be a water city on purpose, but it has withstood the test of time as such. Perhaps we could redesign New Orleans to be a city who is in harmony (no pun intended) with the water that surrounds it. New Orleans could embrace the influx of water during storm surges, and hurricanes by becoming a city ON the water instead of a city UNDER the water when tragedy strikes. It would be best, in my opinion, to have the city rebuilt on floating structures since we are keenly aware that the force of the water will move the land surface below making pylons a poor choice. Yes, the city may be on stilts, but the stilts' moorings would move with the shifting silt. (N.O. is, after all, built on a delta...)

The city could be designed with the same "streets" in mind but instead of the streets being paved with pavement, they could be of water. Gondolas and gondoliers could be the taxis and buses and transportation - using the water instead of barricading themselves from it. This configuration would also reduce crime...how many criminals are going to run into the [water] "street?" Not too many foot chases there... And, of course, the motorized boats (for law enforcement or businesses) would be eco-friendly and would invigorate the alternative fuels industry while simultaneously providing faster transportation within city limits.

The people who ALREADY live there should have first dibs on the real estate (such as it will be) and would be guaranteed a place to live once construction was completed and houses were available. They would also be offered employment FIRST, relative to the rebuild and contingent on each applicant's experience. Civil engineers and current residents would be put to work revitalizing their own city in a meaningful way. Locals to N.O. would be given jobs to help with the construction -- everything from actual construction work to administrative to acquiring funds, and dispersal of those funds. There would be many new jobs and many reasons for FOREIGN MONEY to come to the US. It would be an attraction. It could be great for the people of the whole country...not just New Orleans.

The Dutch are losing their land to the sea. "In response to rising sea levels, the fierce North Sea and swelling rivers, the Dutch are designing floating houses, roads, even cities." In the event that Holland is totally overrun by the sea, we could offer them refuge here in our great country when their land is gone. The Dutch are exceedingly resourceful people. They have made tremendous strides in mathematics, physics, (15 Dutch people have been awarded the Nobel Prize), and agriculture including, but not limited to, water management and control. Why not invite them to help us with this 'water problem' and show the world how Americans DO have a global consciousness and that we DO want to be a part of what's going on in the world. We would appear at once magnanimous and mature on the global scene. I would enjoy being thought of as a country other country's would like to do business with. I would relish having created such a grand and forward-thinking place to as our "New Venice."

As it is now, New Orleans (to my current understanding, that is) will be rebuilt pretty much as it was before. Waiting for a Cat 4 or 5 to drown the place again. Mr. Bolaris has made significant mention that this year will see an increase in summer storms (tropical depressions, storm surges and hurricanes) do to the effects of La Niña. The people of New Orleans haven't even recovered from Katrina yet. Those people are in line for more suffering and squalor. It doesn't have to be this traumatic forever. Can't we think ahead and change that? Can't we change the face of what the USA means and move into this century?

The False Hopes Argument

Finding herself in an unexpected battle for nomination, Hillary and her campaign reframed their attack on Obama, arguing not just that he lacked experience, but that he was an empty suit, full of rhetoric and cadence, but not much else. More than anything else, the problem with this argument was that it was less of an attack on Obama and more of an attack on Obama supporters. They had been duped, she was arguing, allowing their hope to be unrealistically inflated, and were in for a wake-up call if they didn't heed her advice. The attack instantly struck a cord, an offensive condescension that seemed misplaced and unfair. Without skipping a beat, Obama's speechwriters responded by capturing the belittlement felt by his audience: "In the unlikely story of America," Obama proclaimed, "there is nothing false about hope."

I, too, feel many of you are being "duped" by this candidate. I certainly hope that if he wins, he will be able to govern this country well and be able to shed the shackles of his supporters -- that is, those who bind him to his Party's interests. After all, his Party decided to present him to you for candidacy for the Presidency. The ground rules (the ideals that the candidate must represent in order to satisfy the Party's nomination) have been laid down by them first. Favors and debts must be repaid before one can effect the change they (personally) desire for the country. Senator Clinton has paid her dues in this arena, Senator Obama has not.

Not one candidate skates into office without having their hands already bound. No matter which candidate surfaces in November, they too will have to come up with George W's $62 billion for Katrina AND $100 billion budget. George W. Bush made promises that are not going to be easily sidestepped. Millions of people are expecting to get their money -- the money that [then] former President Bush promised them and we (taxpayers and other elected officials who vote) agreed to give them. Where is all of THAT money going to come from? The economy is slowing to a grinding halt, clearly we are IN a recession (I mean, "scrap gold??"), and though every candidate may WANT to effect change and to do better, and no matter how we believe they (our candidate) will provide the change and growth we seek as a society, as a nation, or as individuals, their (the winning candidate's) hands are bound by all previous votes and promises (be they public promises and votes or no.)

Where is the money coming from if I elect Senator Obama? How will he solve this problem? What is Senator Obama going to do about NAFTA? About the North American Union? About government's accountability for the spending of our tax dollars? How transparent will he be if right at this moment I cannot determine if he is going to accept public funding as agreed by the parties, or if he is going to continue to smile and tout his 'change' message while providing no path to same? It has now come to light that Senator Obama has officially declined to attend the annual "State of the Black Union" symposium in New Orleans. This important event "will address a largely African-American crowd of thousands in New Orleans' Ernest M. Morial Convention Center — where thousands of the city's poorest residents sought shelter in squalid conditions after Hurricane Katrina in 2005."

Senator Clinton will attend the State of the Black Union symposium. She accepted the invitation immediately, even though her African-American supporters were decidedly alienated after South Carolina. She is still reaching out to those she promised to represent and fight for.

I believe Senator Clinton to be the better suited candidate for the situations in which the United States currently finds itself. I definitely think Senator Obama will be a great President someday and I very much look forward to being one of his supporters then. But I do not believe Senator Obama is the best candidate for the job(s) of President of the United States of America right now. If Senator Obama could provide a viable means as to how he is going to generate billions in funds and thousands of jobs to make his claims of change more authentic ... then I will vote for him.
