Here's ONE you folks HAVEN'T even THOUGHT ABOUT: WELFARE and UNEMPLOYMENT RATES RISING because of company REFUSALS to hire (a) smoker(s)!

Now that companies CAN (seemingly) DISCRIMINATE against someone because they smoke, doesn't anyone see that this WILL ALSO INCREASE the UNEMPLOYMENT RATE?, Not to mention that these same idiot companies forcing this ban ARE and WILL BE CREATING POSSIBLE WELFARE CASES as well!

So now you folks tell me, would you rather keep the SMOKER EMPLOYED or would you idiots that want to maintain and FORCE people out of a job because they are a smoker, do you really want YOUR TAX MONEY to support these folks on WELFARE? Just remember, some of these idiotic bans CAN and WILL CAUSE EXCESSIVE UNEMPLOYMENT and this too, WILL AFFECT the UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, which is already at an all time high! Not to mention possible hardships on families!

Even if I were a die-hard NON-SMOKER (and I was at one time), I would not want to have my tax money paying welfare checks to a person perfectly capable of working, but because they may be a smoker, have lost or been denied a job and NOW WE (all of us) will have to foot the bill to help them along.

No, I'm not trying to make this a NON_SMOKER vs SMOKER issue here, I am just trying to point out by imposing such IDIOTIC BANS as not being allowed to smoke on or off the job, on breaks, or our own time, WILL CAUSE UNEMPLOYMENT and WELFARE CASES to RISE where these lunatic bans may be put into place!

So now THINK ABOUT that and WHERE SOME MORE of YOUR TAX MONEY may be going because of such lunacy.

Or has NO ONE even thought about this side of the coin and the repurcussions it can cause?

So just try and think about that the next time your company/organization or a person says:  I refuse to hire a smoker or insist that not hiring a person that may smoke is a good thing to do.

nati -- here we go again ...

I suppose your arguments of unemployment and welfare carry a little weight, but have you ever considered the medical costs and costs of lost productivity associated with all the smoking-related diseases?

I assure you, the figures are staggering -- do a Web search.

I would rather pay a smoker to stay home, if it mean we could cut off ALL ILLEGALS !!!!!!

I'm smoker and would find another job if I needed too, I'm now retired so I don't really care

you seem to forget that while you have the right to smoke, we have the right not to hire you. In some places, smoking is not allowed on the property, so that means if you try to smoke on your fifteen minute break and have to walk off property to do it then you are prolly taking more then a fifteen minute break, HOWEVER what you do on your own time is up to you and I dont think anyone should have to go through testing to see if you are taking anything that at this time is perfectly legal for you to take.

what you also fail to mention is that corporations are trying to save money ...and one way to save money is thru health insurance. For example I work for a top 20 corporation in Orlando and we are currently embroiled in negotiations between the company and the union. The company anually spends on premiums over 10k... multiply that times 300,000 employees world wide and thats a hefty sum. So if you are a smoker dont you think that your medical insurance would be higher? If you were a company wouldnt you rather hire someone that doesnt smoke and can save the company money rather than hire someone that smokes and raises the premiums? Just my 2 cents

Smoking creates welfare cases which cause us to pay higher taxes. LOL, That's a pretty big stretch. However, if it's not my tax dollars then it's my kept dollars paying for dry cleaning to get the stink out of my clothes. Your point only seems to prove that one way or another smokers are going to cost us all. To me that's just another reason to ban it.

Wasn't it President Clinton that signed a bill and declared smokers drug addicts? Nicotine is a legal drug and therefore would make this practice illegal. Not to mention discriminatory.

Native_Floridian: Am I correct in reading the other blogs that this is something thats hit you personally.. Either way heres a cheap cop out from you Canadian native counterparts.. They've won alot of challenges due to the fact they relate smoking to ceremonial rights, I love it LOL.

swansong2 you know when I was in the manufacturing end of things us smokers took shorter breaks and put in longer days than the non smokers so.. Maybe it's not the smoking thats killing us but the lack of our casual life style. and lack of work ethics that alot of non smokers have.

What gets me is this..... If an employer provides healthcare to their employees...isnt it the employees that are paying for the coverage? I havent worked for a company in many years that provided healthcare totally...all the companies are doing is offering a lower rate, because of the number of people employed. So If I chose to have said insurance...that I pay for...I should be allowed to smoke. again smoking tobacco is NOT illegal. This is Blatant discrimination, and should not even be in any area of discussion.

twizlled, that's EXACTLY it, when I *WAS* employed, I PAID a HEFTY amount for "health insurance" and as you stated I WAS PAYING FOR IT, so how am I costing the company money when:

#1. I AM PAYING for MY HEALTH INSURANCE and MY SMOKING has never, not once caused me to absent from work, other medical problems I have had, but NOT because I smoke and NO, the other medicals have no correlation to smoking!

#2. I ONLY took breaks at my appointed times, unless I was working on something and it could not be left unfinished, then I would take my 15 minute break.

#3. I have worked for companies that don't allow smoking on their property, HOWEVER all you have to do is walk to the CITY/COUNTY sidewalk area and YOU ARE OFF PROPERTY! it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out and it doesn't make you take your break any longer than allotted either.

#4. No, it's NOT a far stretch about welfare, think about it, if you fired from a job and can't get another because companies are BANNING smoking, where else are you going to go. This WILL become a reality within time if these bans ARE allowed to continue.

#5. I say we SHOULD file a CLASS ACTION suit!

True Native Floridian and of Southern Heritage and PROUD OF IT!Currently live in Casselberry, Florida with my wife and two cats, one of which is my avatar photo.I am also a "Paranormal Investigator" and do have a strong belief in ghosts, spirits, demons and things not explainable of this world. Despite what folks say, not everything does have a scientific explaination and I, believe it or not, am of a scientific mind myself, but I have seen and experienced things that absolutely have no scientific or logical explaination.I HATE BRAIN DEAD POLITICANS and BRAIN DEAD VOTERS that would put incorrect people into office beause of their gender or color, that IS NOT what makes or breaks a candidate.I believe it is actually time to throw our Government out with the trash! Why? Because all they do is they KEEP WORKING AGAINST US, because they sure ARE NOT WORKING WITH or FOR US!I dislike people that do not have enough sense to stay home to drink alcoholic beverages, but would rather drive drunk (sometimes with children in the vehicle!) and impaired on the roads than find a designated NON DRINKING DRIVER!I really dislike people (transplants) talking badly about my home state and it is something that will rile me up and may just have me say something you won't like, but if you insult where I grew up and was raised, EXPECT the same in kind. I try to be tolerant, but this is one area I HAVE NO TOLERANCE for transplants insulting the "Florida way of life", don't like it, keep your mouth shut and go home. I don't and have never went and visited any other states and bad-mouthed it, even if I didn't like it, I kept considerate of YOUR HOME while I visited, why can't you do the same when in Florida?
