I don't know about the NINE out of TEN times, but, I agree that non-smokers contribute alot.
As the worst type of non-smoker in the world... an ex-smoker... I have found myself looking around at smokers.
While most of the slightly older American smokers (at least 25 years old, in general) seem to keep other people in mind and attempt to be considerate of others, alot of the punk kids don't. I figure it is a maturity thing, I thought I was pretty considerate at 20 with my smoking... but I probably wasn't.
The worst offenders are the European visitors, they are so rude with it... I had one lady light one up three times in a restaraunt... even though they were told to put it out each time, the third time they were asked to leave... they did, but not really quietly.
I wish that congress would lose their drinking priviledges... maybe then they would wake up and see how hypocritical it is to jump down smokers throats...

Well, I can't say I blame you there for blasting those two, Native. Nothing I can't stand more than self-rightous twits.

Now, I'm a non-smoker myself, but if I was, I would've handled your situation differently by turning their insults against them:

"Okay, that's all well and fine, UNTIL this BIMBO(lady) drives in and parks, gets out of her car with her kids, gives me a REAL NASTY GLARE and then YELLS at me about "smoking in front of her children is setting a BAD example and that I should put out that cigarette immediately, not only because it's a bad example to her children, but you're NOT supposed to be smoking in the area!"

Well... I was here first, you pulled up next to ME, so who's fault is that? Really? I'm not allowed to smoke here? Please point out the sign. And whats that ashtray doing there?

Nothing like deflating someone's arguement when they can't back it up. Makes them look even stupider than they already are.

Also, one time I was at a restuarant where by state law, there is no smoking. Some guy lites up a cigar. Well when I called over the manager, she said " Well is a regular so I cant say anything. I said you better call the cops then as this is gonna get nasty. I proceded to dump a cup of water on the guys cigar and he and his family wanted to fight me. The cops were called and we both almost went to jail. I got an incident report and made a complaint to their corporate office, needless to say, that manager no longer works at that place all because she didnt have the guts to enforce the law or find someone who could. I disagree with you that non-smokers bring it upon themselves. I never invade a smokers space. How many Non smokers cause fires along the road by accidently throwing their gum out the window? Just a thought. I have nothing I repeat nothing against smokers, as long as they stay away from me when smoking. I have dated several smokers and even had smoking roomates. They just know the rule to do it outside and all is well. Oh an alot of mouthwash when kissing time comes around HAHA

I, too, am an anti-smoking freak WHEN the smoking invades MY right, or my kid's RIGHT'S to BREATHE FREELY. That woman pulled into the parking space next to you, THAT was HER choice, she could have backed up, and gone elsewhere, if she was so concerned about her kid's lungs. Under different circumstances, such as the cigar incident Jack mentioned, I probably would have pitched the same fit. It infuriates me when someone infringes on my right to breathe clean air. With the countless studies that have been done on the dangers of 2nd hand smoke, nobody can dispute the validity of the findings. However, that doesn't mean non-smokers have the right, under every circumstance, such as yours, Native, to have the say so in who has to move!

And don't forget vegetarians that gag at the site of a hamburger. Puleeeeeeeaaassseee!!!

Well let me tell you this, she WAS NOT PARKED NEXT TO ME, she was parked 3 or 4 SPACES over AWAY FROM ME, but had to walk past my vehicle because the parking spaces are right along the store, although there are some opposite where I was parked away from the store. Also let me state this, I wasn't going to, but I will now, she was LOADED, YES, she reeked of alcohol, so that could have very well contributed to her behavior as well, I can't really say. BTW: I took her plate, vehicle and her description and called the cops saying I have a suspicion of a woman driving intoxicated with children in the car.

Now I am NOT, nor have I ever been a "rude smoker", I don't toss ANYTHING out my vehicle windows period, when its time to dump my ashtray I do it in a garbage can making sure all butts are definitely out by pouring a little water in the ashtray.

Nothing makes me angrier than seeing MORONS tossing their lit butts out their car windows, tossing ashes all over the roadway and Iloathe the smokers that can not even pick themselves up off a bench to walk less than 1-2 feet to DiSPOSE of their spent butt either, I also DO NOT like those that would just blatantly approach folks and just blow smoke in their face for the hell of it.

As for smoking in restaurants, believe it or not, I CAN AGREE with that, I hate trying to eat and having smoke blowing everywhere. So I have NO PROBLEM with that, however, I DO have a problem when these same establishments serve alcohol, I usually avoid those places, but sporting events and public events tend to sell alcohol and put up signs to NO

BTW: I'd have done the same about the guy smoking the cigar in an area where smoking is not permitted. That manager and any staff that did not follow the rules here should have all been terminated and replaced with those that have the guts to have any patron put out that cigar or cigarette where it is NOT to be smoked!

Good for you, Native, for turning the tables on HER, and calling her out on the floor for being intoxicated and driving with her kids in tow!
