Revealed: UK’s first official sharia courts

Abul Taher div#related-article-links p a, div#related-article-links p a:visited { color:#06c; }

ISLAMIC law has been officially adopted in Britain, with sharia courts given powers to rule on Muslim civil cases.

The government has quietly sanctioned the powers for sharia judges to rule on cases ranging from divorce and financial disputes to those involving domestic violence.

Rulings issued by a network of five sharia courts are enforceable with the full power of the judicial system, through the county courts or High Court.

Sad, sad is the day for (formerly) Great Britain.

Sharia law is demeaning to women, and intolerant to anyone other than Muslims.

Hopefully the US doesn't follow suite.

They sure have figured out the proper way to conquer the West, haven't they?

Start small, and win the little battles. Battles like the "right" to shut down a factory to accomodate YOUR religion. The "right" for a Muslim cabbie to refuse to pick up an Amarican because the American just came out of a liquor store.

Those are just for starters. We need to be nipping this crap in the bud, and quickly.

Hey genius, it's spelled "AMERICAN." Pretty sure your cabbie knows how to spell it, so should you.

When people criticize grammar and spelling, it shows they no other basis for their snarky platform.

My husband received an e-mail about this last week from another attorney. The family law attorneys here are really watching this. Here's the text of his message:

Subject: [DivorceLaw] Unbelievable but true

The Times of London online, reports in it's Sept. 14th edition that England has approved sharia courts in four cities including London so that Islamic law may be imposed in matters including divorce. This is done through the English Arbitration Act of 1996. Two more courts are scheduled for Glasgow and Edinburgh. This is essentially ADR but you have to wonder how voluntary the participation really may be. My last check of sharia law, admittedly a few years ago, granted automatic custody of boys to dads at age 5 and girls at age 7. Property was to be divided 50/50 unless the husband declared the wife to be "disobedient". The article did not discuss arguments to the contrary based on public policy but did indicate six cases have just taken place. Thoughts and comments? At what point does diversity become a burden and not an asset? How about here in our jurisdiction? The full article is at http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article4

So, child- does that sit well with you and your brainy cabbie friends?

Hope???? they don't do this in US? If we do not start demanding that our legistlative and judicial bodies adhere to our Constitution this will happen here. Our preamble to the Constitution says that it is the "law of the land" and that we will not allow the appointment of any government body which is controlled by religion. Thank God for the ACLU!
