With the new 2008 models and even some 2009 models already being featured in dealers showroorms, many folks are looking forward to getting behind the wheel of a shiny new SUV, sports car, or convertible, but which cars receive the most complaints from consumers?  It's a common inquiry we receive from prospective car buyers year after year, so Lemon Law attorney and Consumer Advocate Craig Thor Kimmel teamed up the Center for Auto Safety to promote their Car Complaint Index.  This is an objective list, which shows which vehicles receive the most complaints per sales.

2008 Car Complaint Index

Cars at the top of the 2008 Car Complaint Index:

Toyota FJ Cruiser

Dodge Nitro

Lexus ES

Hyundai Entourage

Toyota Camry

2008 Best Bets

A sample of the Best Bets:

Kia Optima

Nissan Altima

Honda CR-V

I have a serious complaint about my vehicle. I have a 2004 Acura TL. In the past 3 months, I have had to have the entire steering column replaced among other things.

I feel like it shouldnt be having so many problems. Here's a question, why did my 7 year old used Honda Accord have fewer problems than my the TL I bought new? I mean, they're the same car but Acura is a bit more souped up.

In the future I might just go buy a Honda product. THey drive forever.

I also have a complaint. I bought a new 2006 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. It only had 27 mile son it when I bought it. Let's see... the first year I had it:

- The driveshaft fell off while driving home
- The axles have been replaced (extreme shimmy when braking)
- Transmission light keeps coming on
- Now the shimmy is coming back which means the axles probably need to be replaced yet again.

I am sick of it! I am unloading this Dodge piece of crap and getting something reliable. And yes, the driveshaft physically broke off while driving home from work. It needed a flatbed truck to remove it from the road. After several letters to Chysler, they do not care. They feel, one customer lost, no big deal.

This is great info Michelle! I was going to get a car but I see it is in the worst 25 list. You just saved me more hassles. Thanks!

One other point to mention that follows Julie's question. Why is it that prior to me purchasing a 2006 vehicle with TONS of problems, the vehichle I traded in was a 1993 with ZERO problems?

Why has reliability taken a back seat?

Electrons - It sounds to me like your entire drive train is out of alignment.

You sure that truck wasn't in a wreck ?

2 years ago, I was shopping for a used vehicle and I test drove an 04 Suv with 400 miles on it.(It was 06) I was looking to get a deal on an 05 leftover.
When I got out of the white vehicle, I noticed new white paint splotches on the driver's door.
When I inquired about this, I was told it got parked too close to the paint booth.
When I asked why it was parked near the paint booth, I was told, they have a parking problem at that dealership, and they park cars anywhere they can.
When I asked why they had an 04 around, they told me they have so many cars, they sometimes "get lost".

What I'm getting at is, I figure that vehicle I drove was a demo that got into a fender bender, and it took 'em awhile to get around to fix it.

Maybe something similar happened to your truck.

Julie, Electrons -

As to your (valid) questions of why the older models you traded in had less problems -

You took care of your vehicles, and the previous owners of your current vehicles didn't.

And Julie- I'm no car mechanic, but my first impression of your steering column is this...

That car was stolen at some point before you owned it.
Somebody either jammed a screwdiver into the ignition, or they tore up the steering column to get at the wires.

Whoever replaced the steering column before you bought the car didn't do it right.

Oh, I just noticed you bought the car new. Nevermind.

All we can do is learn from our experiences.

Sometimes, we can even look back and laugh at them.

Hey JT! It's been a while.....

I looked into the lemon law, but I did not qualify because the truck had to be in the "garage" for 30 days out of one calendar year.

Since I bought it new, I made the dealer responsible. To make a long story short, they fixed it in less than a day. They make sure it is out of there quickly. For this instance, I think the Dodge dealership in Boyertown PA was smart. From that point on, I took it to another dealer in Elverson for the axles to be replaced. It is just constant repairs and I have no time for the BS.

The lemon law has it's advantages, but for my case I was hosed. I think dealerships learned the game to steer around this law.

A bit off topic, if there is one lesson I learned.... NEVER take your car to a dealer for annual inspections. I wont go into details here, but they will make money from you left and right from routine inspections. Trust in your local car repair shops who are licensed to perform inspections.

This is cool, Michelle told us to vent... Let's all get it out in the open.

I just saw the Flyers won! Yeaaaahhhhh!!!!!!!!

Electrons:

There are state and federal laws. If you went in three times for the same problem under warranty, you are entitled to possible money back under a Federal law called the magnuson moss warranty act.

why did my 7 year old used Honda Accord have fewer problems than my the TL I bought new?

Before, the Honda/Acura was made in Japan. Now, They are made in here. Enough said. (joke)

Toyota FJ cruiser, white roof and different color everywhere else should be the biggest complain.

Wow, Hyundai made best bets. After the Hyundai Excel, I thought Hyundai would never come out of the toilet.
