There are some 13 million errors in credit reports every year so it's in your best interest to check yours for any mistakes!  You are entitled to one free credit report from each of the big three credit agencies but you have to know where to go.  There are plenty of companies that say "free" but they can end up costing you money, big money!

You've probably seen the catchy ads for freecreditreport.com but the site doesn't necessarily spell savings.   If you click on freecreditreport.com's web site to order your credit report you can be billed $14.95 a month for a credit monitoring service after a free trial.  So essentially your "free" credit report ends up costing $180 a year!

Experts say www.annualcreditreport.com is the site you should be using.  It's the only site that is truly free and run by all three credit reporting agencies and the government.  Keep in mind, the credit reports are free but your score is not.

I'll still never forget when the Bosnia crisis escalated way back when. I was told to pack my bags and head to Norfolk VA. Meet the F-18's out at sea and be a support role. I worked on the F-18 hornets as a radar and weapons technician. We were given little notice. Say our goodbyes and get going.

When I returned home months later, I find my credit was stained by a $30 unpaid phone bill. Ummm...I'm in the NAVY out at sea supporting fighter jets. When I built my first house years later, this was questioned. I had to write a report to the bank explaining the $30 late bill with proof of where I was. That was a total mess! I guess rather than say goodbye to loved ones, I should have written letters to the phone company.

Thanks Michelle! I'll see if this still shows up in my report with your links. That was a while back. Lessons learned though... It don't matter if your fighting for the nation, if a bill sits in a mailbox for months, your credit will be stained. I lived in Jacksonville Florida back then, thanks Bell South! I hope by now that is resolved :)

Good info. I'll try this out.

ANd I would recommend www.lifelock.com so that no one can steal your idenity.. this is new technology that works. I recommended it to a lady here at MyfoxOrlando who got her SSN lost in the mail box.

New technology? Do your homework before you commit to LifeLock! Experian is taking them to court and there is a class action lawsuit against lifelock. Lifelock does what you can do with 3 phone calls for FREE.
