No endeavor is without risk !  Just getting out of bed in the morning, one can trip, stumble, fall, throw a back out or break a neck. Any of that is possible, so do you spend the rest of your life in bed ? How about taking a shower or bath, you can : fall, break a hip, scald yourself, or drown to name a few. Any of that is possible, you hear of it all of the time. Because of the risks do you forgo a bath ? What about driving , what are the risks ? Do you just quit ? What about work, any accidents there ? Too risky, do you just quit ?  Ever hear of any cooking accidents ? Too dangerous, why eat ? Now that you've somehow made it to the end of the day, do you dare sleep ? It has it's risks as well. People have died in their sleep, both at peace and  violently at the hands of another, then there's fire. These are just a paltry few risks that you run every day, but you still do.

Energy independence is a noble endeavor and a laborous quest. It is not without risk. Do you think it can be done ?  Or is it too tough and full of risk ? Do you just quit ?

Every means presently available to achieve that goal has some varing degree of risk, both enviromental and financial.

I think it can be done !

Any thoughts ?

Never, ever quit, and never surrender! How will we know if we don't try? What are we supposed to do? Let the Stinking, Al-Qaeda, Sandscorpions just take over? Should we start kissing the backs of their greasy hands now? I say no! NOT NOW! NOT EVER! We need to become more dependant on our own resources! They're RIGHT HERE!

Exactly! We need to start drilling everywhere the government say they can't! There is a "risk" of a spill, or other environmental disaster. But like you said, with no risk there will never be any gain!

With todays technology the risk is minimal, and the gain could be the best thing that ever happened to this country!

The people of America are suffering at the hands of the wealthy, greedy, arabs that are raping us more everyday while we protect them.

It is sickening, and needs to end. We may have the biggest oilfield in the world, in or around the US! They will never find it if they are not allowed to look for it!

It makes me so mad!

If you think about it, almost every major oil spill was by a ship transporting the oil, not by any drilling rig!

Thanks Deborah and Frank for your comments ! Energy independence may not save us much presently, but in the future it will. My future is of far less consequence than my daughter's or your daughter's. At the very least, even if further in the future, our kid's and America deserves better !

What needs doing is to throw the bastards out of Washington DC. No not the politicians the enviormentalists. Almost every rule regulation new Federal law that is blocking almost everything is being done at their behest.

The've had their 15 minutes and see where it's gotten us! If we throw them out and we ALL light a fire under Congresses Tail some esential correction would be made

Thanks Di and LQQKING for your comments. LQQKING I do believe that there needs to be at least one more lobbyist group influencing politicians on the hill, something like say : PETAC ( People for the Ethical Treatment of the American Consumer ).

I will never understand why, at least 40 years ago, they taught us in school; oil is not replaceable and in time we will run out. Why with this knowledge, didn't more people work on ways to get us off the oil? So, if you can't find a better way, then drill in US soil or off the coast so we don't keep paying for foreign oil.

I think PETAC is a great idea.

Hey Gammies ! Thanks for the comment and good to hear from you as well. As consumers we are to great degree responsible as all of the alternates require a greater upfront investment, we've been penny-wise dollar foolish. I view offshore drilling as a neccessary short-term time buyer until new technology can come on line. I really don't see a choice without destroying the economy and our children's futures.

I think those plans should have been put into action years ago. The H2O car was built, and then the guy who invented it died.

Aren't they selling gas guzzling trucks cheaper now? Imagine that, they still are not loosing profits. Greedy people make me sick!

Gammies, GM is closing 3-4 plants that used to make full size trucks. They are loosing money, check the " BIG THREE'S " quarterly statements. They are awash in " red " ink !

I'm sad about people loosing their jobs. I think they wouldn't have to if their bosses would take a cut in pay. I guess if you get used to eating with real silver, then you really don't know how to use a spork.

BIG THREES's? I guess you are referring to the three biggest auto builders. I'm on this box so much, I can't keep up with current affairs. LOL Please forgive me!

Who are the big three now? It used to be GM, Ford and Chrysler.

I believe it is now GM, Ford and Toyota!

Or is it GM, Toyota, and Ford?

I guess I should have phrased that better. The " BIG THREE " was GM,FORD and CHRYSLER. I believe Frank is correct and current in his comment. I grew up listening to the American automakers called that and it just kind of stuck. Gammies you need no forgiving, :). This is a little off topic, but I had to take my truck into the dealer's service department, while there I was looking at Rangers and found a nice one, standard cab,5-speed, air, a stick, and a 20/26 mileage rating. I really wasn't in a buying mood and I wasn't in a sitting mood so I thought I'd browse the lot. Anyways the salesmen told me that this is the last year for the Ford Ranger, despite that it gets the best compact truck mileage and a 28 yr. run. The new replacement will be a 4-door version based on a European Ford model and will be built in the USA. Sad to see the Ranger go, I wonder if that's progress ?

Some say it is progress. Progress would be making an affordable auto which runs on air. LOL

I miss having my truck. The "Old Man" was one of my favorites.

Well, if GM keeps producing the S-10, it is not progress, but rather skipping down a rung on the ladder.

Who want's a compact pickup with four doors?

Ford is going off the deep end.

Yeah Frank, the sales guys couldn't believe it, let alone me. Quit manufacturing something that sales well and is economical ? What ?
