I'm stumped. Why would anyone target Labrador Retrievers as a vicious breed of dog? Labradors are more likely to lick you to death than attack.

Prince George's County Police Chief Melvin High said Wednesday that Calvo and his family were "most likely ... innocent victims," but he would not rule out their involvement, and he defended the way the raid was conducted. He and other officials did not apologize for killing the dogs, saying the officers felt threatened.

I'm sympathetic to assertions that officers felt threatened, but Labradors? I can't wait for the jury to approve the massive amount of money this couple will ask for in litigation. Will Prince George's County change anything? After losing millions, I bet they will.

If you will think about it, dogs like the taste of blood. You know how a dog will lick a wound on a person. They will lick until the skin is broken. When they taste blood they will start chewing. That may be what happened in this case. The dogs tasted blood, and continued to do what any animal would do. It licked and chewed. It was not a vicious attack. It was simply animals doing what comes naturally.

RedRiver, I think you need to reread this article. There was no blood before the police killed the dogs.

One dog was shot in the bedroom door, some distance from the officers. The other was killed as it ran away from the officers. The man, and woman involved were the MAYOR, and his motherinlaw. Now they have some idea of what is really going on out here. The police are fast becoming tools of the oppressor. A baptist minister, who was a substance abuse counciler, died of a heart attack while handcuffed laying on his living room floor. Bogus address from a ci to get out of a charge. A 26yr old woman, shot dead by swat while holding her 17 month old son in her arms. I wonder if the mayor, and his motherinlaw realize just how close they came to meeting the angel of death?

Any dog can attack if they feel threatened. I have the scars to prove that and they are from a lab. But I still love labs and goldens. Animals will react from fear and that can be from a sudden noise or movement. This is a horrible event. And this is also an example of what happens when you have an uneducated police force. Pay them more, make sure you get high quality, well informed people on the force and you don't have these kinds of things happen.

i was bit, unprovoked i might add, by a weenie dog in the face when i was younger. bit me above my eye!
any dog, at any time can bite. i too do not see this particular breed aggressive usually. they are a very intelligent breed of dogs. who knows...maybe the dogs were protecting their owners...or thought they were.

This is SO horrible. You are right Marks about labs are more inclined to lick you to death. They are the sweetest and loyal dogs.

The police need better training and information regarding dogs. The tend to just shoot because to them it is only an animal. They could use mace, a stun gun or other means if they feel threatned. My Bella is not used to other people and will bark at anyone who gets close to her. In their eyes they would probably feel threatened and shoot her too. She would never bite anyone.

Any dog breed can bite or attack if they feel threatened.

The police really need to take this more seriously. They need to treat the dogs as they would a human. Use every means possible to control the situation without resorting to deadly force.

I stand corrected. I was thinking of another incident reported on the news.

A lot of cops are trigger happy. Shooting a dog while fleeing? Ohhhhhhh, brave cop he was!

These guys are no better than Michael Vick.

kava are wey nie dogs, and an excellent protector for a family's children, I can see where someone breaking into that home would probably put them in the attack mode, but I doubt they would have aggressively attacked anyone if they proeeded , that is a terrible tradgedy, I would imagine, those dogs were like family members as are My dogs, I think the sheriff's department was completely out of line !!

Dak your fingers were off on the keyboard. Happens to all of us.

Labs are wonderful dogs. I would love to get me another black one, well or a yellow one, well any lab.

I love the labs personality.

Dak that is true. They do lick wounds to heal them.

You know most people don't realize that a dogs mouth is much more sanitary than a human's. They product something that keeps their mouths clean. Sorry to be so vague but I don't feel like looking anything up to get the exact facts but everytime I get a boo boo my Bella goes after it cause she is trying to heal Mom.

Anyway never be afraid to let a dog kiss you. It is the sweetest thing. That is one way they show their love. Now if they just finished licking their balls I would wait a little bit so that cleaning agent they have kicks in.

With all due respect to law enforcement, why would anyone shoot a fleeing animal or suspect? They are obviously not dangerous in lieu of their flight, that is, they are not in attack mode.

As I said before scotty, they just think of them as just an animal. What they did, to me anyway, is like someone shooting someone in the back that they are trying to rob. You hear lots about those cases but since this is a dog people don't raise as much hell.

The police need to quit this carp. I think some of these cops are just trigger happy and hell who is gonna raise some hell over a "dog". If it were a human being then they would be under investigation and would be scrutinzed. People don't think of animals as being something that should be presevered. They are considered expendible.

My sister-in-law has a K9 Tara and she has her own badge and works for border patrol. Even people that work with her fear Tara,

Sorry to be so long winded but when it comes to dogs I am SO pationate about that subject I can't keep quiet.

That Police dept has some serious issues that need to be brought out in the open. It is that there are personnel that not of a professional kind. That chief needs to explain himself. He is hiding some dark secrets that I can see.
