I would like to know other peoples opinion on the Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee (R)

Please blog your thoughts and opinion (in a educated way please!)

For those who do not know much about him, his bio is below:

Mike Huckabee is out to show people the American dream is still alive.

The former Arkansas governor recently formed a 2008 presidential exploratory committee because he feels the country needs a reawakening and a leadership to address an array of issues, including how to improve the nation's infrastructure, education system, environmental policy and failing health care system.

In the past year, Huckabee visited nearly 30 states to campaign for Republican candidates and conservative causes — and to share his message of vertical politics that he says reflects American values and priorities.

From 1996-2007, Huckabee served as the 44th Governor of Arkansas. When he left office on January 9, 2007, he set out on a nationwide tour to promote his fifth book, “From Hope to Higher Ground: 12 STOPS to Restoring America’s Greatness.” The book reveals his optimistic vision for what America can become with the right kind of leadership and a clear direction.

Huckabee is recognized as a national leader, having been honored by several renowned publications and organizations for his numerous accomplishments. Governing Magazine named him as one of its ‘Public Officials of the Year’ for 2005, Time Magazine honored him as one of the five best governors in America, and later in the same year, Huckabee received the American Association of Retired Person’s Impact Award. In 2007, he was presented with the Music for Life Award by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) for his commitment to music education.

Huckabee is past chairman of the National Governors’ Association (NGA) and chairman of the Education Commission of the States. During his tenure as governor, he served in other leadership positions including president of the Council of State Governments, state co-chairman of the Delta Regional Authority, and chairman of the Southern Governors Association, the Southern Regional Education Board, the Southern Growth Policies Board, the Southern Technology Council, the Southern International Trade Council and the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission.

As former chairman of the Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission, Huckabee worked with the 37-state coalition to develop energy policy and lobby Congress on energy matters, such as the regulation of oil and gas production. He also is known nationally for his focus on technology in state government. He created an automobile license renewal system that’s become a model for states across the country. Huckabee directed the creation of other advancements that have made Arkansas a technology leader among the states.

Huckabee became governor in July 1996 when his predecessor resigned. He was one of the youngest governors in the country at the time. Huckabee was elected to a full four-year term as governor in 1998, attracting the largest percentage of the vote ever received by a Republican gubernatorial nominee in Arkansas, and was re-elected to another four-year term in November 2002.

Huckabee first was elected lieutenant governor in a 1993 special election and was elected to a full four-year term in 1994. He was only the fourth Republican to be elected to statewide office since Reconstruction.

A significant part of his adult life was spent as a pastor and denominational leader. He became the youngest president ever of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention, the largest denomination in Arkansas. Huckabee led rapidly growing congregations in Pine Bluff and Texarkana. He said those experiences gave him a deep sense of the problems faced by individuals and families.

Under Huckabee’s direction, Arkansas has been recognized as having created one of the nation’s best school accountability programs. Huckabee pushed through reforms in Arkansas that have significantly increased the number of charter schools and established new approaches to workforce education.

One of his proudest achievements as governor was signing legislation creating ARKids First. The program provides health insurance coverage for more than 70,000 Arkansas children who otherwise might have gone without. Before leaving office, Huckabee supported the ARHealthNet program which gives small business owners and their employees better access to health care coverage.

Huckabee, a fiscal conservative, pushed through the Arkansas Legislature the first major, broad-based tax cuts in state history — a $90 million tax relief package for Arkansas families. He led efforts to establish a Property Taxpayers' Bill of Rights and created a welfare reform program that reduced the welfare rolls in the state by almost 50 percent. He also doubled the standard deduction to $2,000 for single taxpayers and $4,000 for those who are married. He proposed The Property Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights which established a uniform notice and due process procedure to guarantee that all Arkansans will be treated fairly in property tax assessment.

In total, Huckabee cut taxes and fees over 90 times during his ten and a half years as governor, saving the people of Arkansas almost $380 million. When he left office, Arkansas had over $800 million in state surplus, which he believes should go back to the people in the form of either a tax rebate or tax cut.

As NGA chairman, Huckabee promoted his Healthy America Initiative, based on his successful Healthy Arkansas model. In 2004, Huckabee created the Healthy Arkansas initiative, an effort to encourage Arkansans to stop smoking, exercise more and eat healthier. As a direct result of his efforts, for the first time, Arkansas state employees are taking health risk assessments, are receiving individualized health information and are receiving discounts on health insurance premiums in exchange for healthy behavior. He encouraged private sector businesses by providing them with tool kits to create workplace wellness programs. The Arkansas Healthy Restaurant program was designed to encourage healthy eating options outside the home. Huckabee supported and signed into law the Clean Indoor Air Act of 2006, which prohibits smoking in most Arkansas workplaces.

Huckabee’s efforts to improve his own health have received national attention. Diagnosed with Type II diabetes in 2003, he lost 110 pounds. Barely two years later, he has completed four marathons: The 2005 and 2006 Little Rock Marathons, the Marine Corps Marathon and the ING New York City Marathon. As a result of his accomplishments, The Road Runners Club of America named him its ‘Southern Region Runner of the Year’ and USA Track & Field has named him their ‘Athlete of the Week’ for the country.

Continuing to call for a national emphasis on living a healthy lifestyle, Huckabee completed his fourth book, “Quit Digging Your Grave With A Knife and Fork.” This 12-stop program is a no-nonsense approach to managing one’s health through lifestyle change rather than a simple diet and exercise plan.
Huckabee, 51, enjoys playing bass guitar in his rock-n-roll band, Capitol Offense, which has opened for artists such as Willie Nelson and the Charlie Daniels Band, and has played the House of Blues in New Orleans, the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, CO and for two presidential inauguration balls.

The former governor and his wife, Janet, live in North Little Rock. They have three grown children: John Mark, David and Sarah.

The one issue I don't care for about Huckabee is his plans for immigration reform.

Huckabee vehemently opposed a 2005 bill sponsored by Arkansas State Senator Jim Holt which would deny state benefits to illegal immigrants, calling it "un-Christian." Huckabee argued that illegal immigrants pay more in taxes than they receive in benefits: "They pay fuel taxes. If they're using a fake Social Security number, they're paying Social Security taxes and will never receive any benefit. When a Mexican consulate opened in Little Rock in 2006, Huckabee strongly supported it.

In his opening remarks among Hispanic civil rights leaders at a LULAC convention, Huckabee said the nation will need to address the concerns of the Hispanic community because of its growing influence and population base. "Pretty soon, Southern white guys like me may be in the minority," Huckabee said jokingly as the crowd roared in laughter. He told the LULAC delegates that their presence in the state's capital city was very important because Arkansas has one of the fastest growing Hispanic populations in the nation. "Your gathering is so very significant for our state," Huckabee said.

Huckabee's Political Positions:

* Huckabee is pro-life, and opposes same-sex marriages, and civil unions

* Huckabee is against gun control and is an avid hunter.

* Huckabee supports the death penalty

* Huckabee has expressed support for allowing creationism and intelligent design in school classes along with evolution.

* Huckabee supports the War in Iraq, the troop surge and the continued operation of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

* Huckabee supports illegal immigration. In 2001, Huckabee endorsed the use of foreign workers from Canada and Mexico for agricultural labor. In 2006, Huckabee gave a speech where he said that Hispanic immigration into the US gives Americans a second chance to prove that they are not racist by accepting Hispanic immigrants. He believes that the rule barring immigrants from running for president should be changed, and that costs of legal immigration should be shared between the state and federal government.

* Huckabee supports the FairTax as a replacement for the current tax system.

I have been watching him and I do think he is a very good candidate compared to the rest of the republicans and my only concerns about him is he may let his religion get to involved and also I am not so sure where he stands on immigration, he seems to be more all over the place with this issue.
I have not heard much "dirt" on this guy, so that's why I wanted to post this blog to see if anyone had any dirt, or of course added good things about him as well.

Thanks for the info ThinkTanked!

Aside from some more dirt on him raising about 5 different taxes and getting a low score from a couple of tax watchdog agencies... that's about it... which is good considering all the dirt I can pull up on Giuliani and Romney lol.

If he's a decent bass player who can read, I say go for him. He is an impressive individual, but I am not sure what the political machine in Washington would do to him. Arkansas is a little different that Wash DC. He shows me more than the rest of the candidates.......but Hillary is in folks whether we like it or not.....the deal is sealed.

The deal is far from being sealed, a lot can happen in the next year!!! Her campaign can turn on a dime!

Hillary is very un-qualified for the job, she is ahead by popularity not by experience... I just hope this counrty will learn from it's mistakes, and Hillary would be a big one that we cannot afford.

With that said, please let's not turn this blog into a "Hillary Blog" as that's not the intended topic, if you would like to blog about her than please start another blog, thank you :) I am not one to delete comments however if I have to I will.

from what I know about Mike Huckabee he sounds like the man for the job and what our country needs, we need to be conservative in the condition our country is in currently... and even though Mike may have some flaws... NO one is perfect!

I don't know about that... I've tried to pull up dirt on Ron Paul, I've looked and looked for any indication that he's a wolf in sheep clothing. The guy is virtually flawless, everything he says and stands for is backed by the Constitution and it's pretty hard to argue with that.

If it weren't for Ron Paul, I'd have to sift through the Democrats and try to make a decent choice. I don't think I will... I'll probably still end up writing in Ron Paul's name even if he's not on the ballot. Democrats are too liberal and America just can't afford to go further into debt.

In response to "candyaquino":

You must not be very educated on your republican candidates if you do not know who Mike Huckabee is. I don't see what the point is in the "Huckleberry" comment, so what is Rudy Guiliani part of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer family??? Yeahh kind of childish :)

I don't vote or support "the most popular" candidate unless I feel they are qualified and are right for the job, and in my opinion Rudy and Hillary are not qualified for the job, and not even close. I take this election very seriously as this will be by far one of our most important elections for our counrty's future.

If you read the blog you will find out what the reason is for the blog... it's very simple... it's about MIKE HUCKABEE. If you want to talk about Rudolph Guiliani than please START another blog, thank you!

MarkChristopher, with all due respect, you are a bit naive about politics and/or political parties. If you have ever spent time in Washington DC, you would know that few things are as they appear to be. What the public sees and what is really happening behind closed doors are usually quite different.

But as far as experience, few have been as close to the oval office as Hillary, unless there have been some relationships that haven't been made public. She is more aware of the types of decisions that must be made by a president and she is more familiar with the decision making process.

I welcome being wrong, but based on the political positioning that has occurred over the last 10-15 years, I believe that Hillary will be the next president. I also believe that she will only last one term and that it is highly probable that Jeb Bush will run for President after Hillary is done.

For just a glimpse of what has occurred notice how much support the Clintons gave Gore and how friendly and close George I and Bill became shortly after the election. Those relationships tell a lot about what is happening in the elite circle.

With what you just said in your comment "shadows" is exactly why Hillary should not be in office as the President!

Jeb Bush will not run for President, I have more respect for the Bush family than I do the Clinton ... HOWEVER those two family's should never become President again, at least in our lifetime. Enough of them, we are in great need of a change in DC, and taking both of them out of power is a great step in the right direction... like I said before I hope that America will learn from it's mistakes this time.

I don't like Huckabee because he is pro illegal invasion. I think I am going to vote for Ron Paul. I have my misgivings about Guiliani (gun control, healthcare and illegal invasion) and Thompson (former ties to CFR which he refuses to explain or is just to lazy to explain). I like Tom Tancredo, but, Ron Paul has a better chance of getting the nomination and I like the two for opposite reasons. I'll vote for anyone to beat Hillary, although, I think she'll win anyway. UGH!

rexsmom, I like your thinking, but immigration, legal or illegal is happening on a very large scale globally. And it is expected to continue for quite a while as undeveloped countries continue to grow at almost double the rates of wealthy countries such as the U.S.

Drastic changes in immigration policy are overdue if the country is to continue to prosper. We need the young people who will work, procreate, save money, buy goods, and pay taxes, to replace or balance the aging population that will spend their savings and depend on government programs. Sovereignty is not as much an issue at this point as is survival and prosperity. We are painfully playing catch-up as a result of the political will of the people.
