Has anyone been watching Shark Week on the Discovery Channel???

It just started on Sunday and will last all week.

They announce a very disturbing fact which really makes me sick to hear. They say that every year humans kill an average of 100 MILLION sharks and a large portion of them are for "fining" purposes which is when they catch the sharks then cut the fins off and then afterwards throw the shark back in the ocean to sink to the bottom and quickly die. Sounds like a very cruel and painful death to me!!!

Most people think sharks are killers and they could care less if they where here on earth or not. I would have to strongly disagree!!! They are needed on this planet more so than we are, and have been here much longer than us. The ocean makes up most of our planet and sharks have a major if not most important role in the oceans eco system and if we continue to pointlessly kill them like we are than I am almost sure we will have major consequences.

How many humans are killed on average per year by a shark, or even injured?? Not many, and does not even compare to the amount we pointlessly kill each year!!! Also the humans who are killed or injured by a shark are in the shark’s territory and usually are a mistaken attack. Then we also go into the shark’s territory and kill millions of them each year for no valid reason and to put any blame on a shark is just wrong!

It just doesn't make sense, and greatly concerns me that we continue to do this! You cannot say this is "human nature" or "the circle of life" becuase that is far from what is going on!

What do you think?

I haven't seen this particular series. I've read about it and seen a program or two on PBS. This practice will do irrepairable damage to the world's oceans. Sharks prey first on the old, sick or injured maintaining healthy stocks of fish. They also scavenge carcases of dead marine animals also of benefit to the seas. This is primarily to satisfy Asian appetites. Good post Mark Christopher!

Yes, I was going to say that the main people who are doing this is Asia (CHINA) which doesn't suprise me at all, those people will do anything and don't care what enviromental effects it has.
We are not only killing all these sharks, we are also killing all the other ocean life for our pleasure, whatever it may be.
We have to keep in mind how important the health of our oceans are for support of life on earth... such as ours.
We just keep on taking and taking and not giving back. It's all catching up to us now, and will only get much worse.
I have nothing against a man going out and fishing and taking his catch home to eat, my problem is with the mass killings and most of them are pointless.
I am pretty sure China is also the country that takes the massive nets and scoops the whole bottom of the ocean floors.

We do that with shrimp boats here. Hundreds of boats, every night, scraping the bottom with nets and chains, all night, every night.

Oh yeah, I just wish it was in HD. Tonight was AIR JAWS -- amazing to see those monster Great Whites "flying" out of the water and gulping down those darn cute sea lions like appetizers....wow!

Yes, I watched the Shark Tribe half asleep last night lol what I did see was really good.

Yes the fishing boats do a lot of damage over in our parts as well. It's horrible and our ocean is in bad shape now from us.

Now we plan to go to the moon in the next decade and ruin it as well.

Okay, so they cut off the fins and throw out the rest. WHY? Is it to kill them for sport or is it an aphrodisiac or delicacy? Seem a waste of time to kill a creature for no good reason. Especially one that is so valuable to our existence.

They use the fins for "shark fin soup" which is over in asia/china. Very expensive soup and people just buy it to show status... not for the taste which they say is not so great.

Yes it's horrible. They say that people over in China are becoming a lot more wealthy and the demand for this soup is increasing a lot which is bad news for the sharks!
Yes... they just cut the fins off and throw the shark back in the water which with no fins cannot swim and just sink to the bottom and dies quickly.
No one is doing anything about this because most of the people don't care about the sharks and would rather have no sharks which is horrible to think of because with out them we would not survive!

I thought Greenpeace was involved in keeping sea life safe. Or do they just keep the oceans safe?

Groups are trying to keep in safe, however it's just not working.
People think becuase the ocean is so big that it has endless sea life which is not the case anymore becuase we have put a huge dent in the population and at this point in time it's almost to late.

What is really disturbing is that there are so many things that we can not control on this earth. And here is something that man can control and it's man that's causing it, bothers me to no end. Man will destroy the planet, all for profit. I hope some day someone will be able to fix the wrong that man has done. Lets hope it won't be too late.
