I have noticed a good amount of people moving out of Florida and going to the Carolina's and Tennessee areas.

Seems like every week, sometimes more often someone I know, whether it's a friend, co worker or just someone I know is informing me they are moving up that way or are already gone.

I know that Florida has not been such a friendly place recently between the expenses, crime, and weather but I know I just could not do it, I love Florida (even though I have to get away sometimes) and I could not imagine living away from the ocean, warmer weather, and the Florida lifestyle.

Has anyone else seem to notice this new trend of people moving up that way over the past year or so?

Also, do you think they will move back later becuase they miss Florida?

I have always lived in Florida so I wouldn't know.

I would love to move out of Florida. I don't like the weather. It throws me off balance not having all 4 seasons. Sorry folks, "winte" just isn't cutting it. Having two morons for Senators just adds to my displeasure. No, I didn't vote for either nit-wit. I voted against them both. With Martinez I had to write in the guy he lied about to get the nomination in the first place. I know there are problems everywhere, so it really doesn't matter.
The only drawbacks of leaving Florida are my husband's job is good and he likes it, our families are here, selling our home would be a nightmare and I have no idea what effect it would have on our kids.

I read an article in the Sentinel a month or so ago about this trend. It doesn't have to do with un-friendliness, but rather, housing prices and property taxes (not to mention home insurance). It's just cheaper up there. Why those states? I don't know...maybe there's just more land or development available at lower prices.

I could understand wanting to have the seasons.
Even though I have always lived in Florida I have seen all seasons in various areas and I must say the autumn leaves is my favorite!
I don't care for snow or cold, I could do with out that.
The only thing that I could see would make me want to move away from Florida is if we had a bad hurricane pass over our area like Katrina.
I am the type that would not want to re build, I would just pack my bags and go.

I know that a good portion of the people are leaving due to expense, which covers housing to insurance and so on.
I have also heard people tell me they are leaving becuase soon enough Florida will not be around much longer, it will be under water from the rising ocean and the hurricanes will increase and they just don't want to deal with it all.
I have heard all different reasons, expense, weather, and even that they don't like the area anymore becuase of the rising crime.

Also, in the south east mountain areas (NC and TN) yes the housing is much less expensive!
You can get a really nice house for 150k -200k which would be like 300k to 400k here, and also the taxes are nothing... usually less than $600 a year, and insurance about the same.

I came from those mountains (NC/TN) people and while housing is cheaper there is limited employment and the wages are not much better than minimum most places. I lived in the ski resort area and our annual income was just about $15,000.00 per year and we were considered the rich family in town. lol. There were quite a few people from Florida that bought there and have spent 10 or more years trying to get back out. Unless you are willing to live off savings (or are independently wealthy) you better be ready for a lifestyle change. Now for those that move to the East coast things are much better. Income is good housing is still affordable and the education system is better than here. From MD to GA (I have lived in most of those places) Florida can't compare but with everything good is something bad so when you really look at the whole picture Florida is really no worse than any other place. Me...well I picked Florida only because it was the closest I could get to the islands and still be in the US. Next move and final one will be that beautiful house on Cat Island. Then finaly I will be able to relax!

Unfornuate, as it sounds, folks have been leaving the state since the early 70's, particularly from south Florida, Miami, has seen a huge Exodus, since I went to school there in 60's. I know I was one who went into Navy, and never looked back, have visited but no thanks to living there now. The city's infrastructure has been ignored for so long that those who have money live in areas that are kept up, and the poor live in squaller, and the crime rate is evident of this.
Look out Orlando, do I see a pattern forming?

I'm originally from N.Y. and have been here 8yrs. After dealing with the snow and cold for 28yrs up north, I welcome the extreme heat.

Yeah, its hot, yes we get hurricanes, but digging yourself out of 2 1/2 feet of snow just to check your mail is no party. If florida sinks as they say so be it. Gives me more of a reason to talk the wife into letting me buy a boat...lol

I have been up to the NC/TN mountains a lot, just to visit, and it does seem like they don't have many jobs or really much of an economy besides depending on the "rich" Florida people who come and visit over the summer, and for the leaves changing.
Another thing that would REALLY bother me if I for some reason had to live their is the way people talk, it's like another language, and they sound like they did not make it out of the first grade. Hmm maybe the taxes are so low becuase they spend so little on education LOL

The property is so much less there and the prices are lower. We were going to start a business and move to TN last year. But for some reason we never followed through with it.
Originally from Ohio, I can never go back again. And if we moved to TN, I doubt if we would move back here either. Unless something really good comes up that we can't resist.

I just purchased land in CO to retire to. The cost to live in Fla is just to much any more, and lets not even get on the subject of crime...

We were up in Minnesota and it was beautiful. When I started looking into Minnesota I found it to be far too socialist for my blood in Minneapolis with their nasty taxes and muslim pandering. I am interested in South Dakota now. Cheap housing and very low taxes, great schools and a surprising amount of technology. Tell me more, tell me more, tell me more.

It appears that the Northerners' fascination with the deep South is ending. Even Hilton Head Island SC recently experienced its first population decline.

Most folks from the North realize that the deep South is not very accepting of outsiders. Florida of course has the label of being the place for old people and tourists. Central Florida is pretty much a cultural waste land. The largest growing "community" is the Villages which has isolationist policies to try and control the area.

If Florida wants to keep up property values it had better do something about property taxes, controlling water costs, improving education, and developing cultural institutions. You can't listen to most of the seniors because they are not interested in the long term planning. That is why they let their own gated communities deteriorate. You also have to contol developers or many of them will continue to rape the state.

Charlotte is in a boom right now. I think they still have the story if you go to abcnew.com and click NIGHTLINE.

I will end up 80 per cent of the time NW of Los Angeles with that west office. JUst for the weather. I cant take this oven .. 40 years is enough. ANd the Crime is horrible all over Florida. If you look at BEST PLACES RATED book, all the crime is in Florida.

But Orlando will be our major office that handles all eastern operations.

As far as 7 years ago real estate and expenses were real cheap here also. Then the cost of houses ballooned and then followed by high insurance and property taxes. If that were not enough add the increased hurricane activity and the rising crime and there is your reason that people are bolting.

Let's hope the hurricanes stay away this year, if we even get one good hit up our way you will really see a huge decline in population.

Mark~ While they may not be rich in the mountains of NC they do have an excellent education system, maily because so many of the parents were denied that education as kids themselves because they had to help work and support the family. The value system up there is unlike anything you will find in a big city area. They are willing to do with less simply because they are happy being able to do more together.
