Yesterday I went to the Body Worlds Exhibit at the California Science Center. It was a very very cool experience!!!!  A little weird at times, but it was a very enlightening experience. I urge you to go and see this incredible exhibit about the human body.
At times, I did stop and think that what I was looking at were once living and breathing humans. You forget sometimes because it almost looks as though they were just mannequins, but no mistake about it, these anatomical specimens on display are authentic. They belonged to people who declared during their lifetime that their bodies should be made available to science.  I thank them for it!

One exhibit that really struck me featured various stages of the fetus. They show you an actual embryo at 4 weeks all the way up to 26 weeks. Whether you are pro life or pro choice, this is a must see.
Body Worlds is on display until September. Go online and buy your tickets. Make sure to see the Imax movie, The Human Body, first. Then check out Body Worlds. It's wild!!

Hi Maria:
I know its controversial, but I think they should not have allowed the use of human bodies in that way for the sake of art. What I think is that the so-called artist is looking for attention and unfortunately chose this controversial way to do so. What's next? Maybe they will hack up humans (in the name of science, supposedly) and then show a pile of discarded organs and call it art. Nonsense, I say. This is not art. Just my humble opinion, though. Its so hard for a new artist to get known and its a shame that they have to try something like this to make their mark and get noticed.

Britney,
I suppose something like this should not be judged... at least not until it has been seen. Humans have used dissection and autopsies to become educated on the internal functions and malfunctions of the body for hundreds of years... the way this "artist" has preserved the bodies is in a non yucky way... for the purpose of educating the masses. I have (so far) only seen photos of this exhibit... but someday I hope to go see it in person. I have heard in the past that some of the people whose bodies were used in this exhibit donated their bodies not just to science, but directly to this cause... even to the point of choosing the pose that they would be preserved in, themselves, before they passed away. I think that if the people who donated their bodies to this cause were ok with the idea... why should we judge them or the artist harshly? No matter what personal feeling or icky-ness it invokes… it is educational.

Maria,
Thanks for the "heads up" (no pun intended) that this exibit is back... I have been wondering when it would return. Now if I can only find someone who will go with me....

i thought about giving my body to science. thought a extra 25 bucks in my pocket for my dead a body is totally worth it. plus no funeral charges to worry about. yeah!

The actual fetuses were real too?? It's one thing for a consenting adult to agree to donate his/her body to science but an unborn child? That's a little eerie and sad, when you think about how it must have happened. A pregnant woman died and had her body (and her baby's) donated? That seems like taking some liberties with the whole "consent" issue. I find it hard to believe that a pregnant woman would consent to have her unborn baby donated to science should they happen to die while she is pregnant.

I would have thought you were talking about how you do the hula in a bamboo skirt, but that's just me I guess. Uh, well you have a point, these folks did donate their bodies away to science. However, had they known they were going to all become a permanent freak show, I am sure they might have had second thoughts. Did the plastic coating shine that much?

maria, i'd like you to focus your attention on science. would be willing to cultivate relationships with people who work at JPL up La Crescenta? also please work your charm to students and professors at Cal Tech in Pasadena. there's tons of interested theories or facts that you can put into five minute packages. really my dear weather reporter, you can be a specialist in the cal tech and JPL arenas. love you maria.

Hi Maria!!

Maganda Umaga Po (Good Morning) Maria!,

As Fernando Lamas and Billy Crystal says: " YOU LOOOOOK MAAARVELOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! " Maria, WOW!!!!! :-)

How are you, fine I hope. :-)

You don't know me very well, I don't know you very well either, I hope I am not out of line or fresh; but, I think you're very gorgeous, and a very sweet and caring person. I watch your show every night and I am your biggest fan!!! Missed your "Getting Georgeous" segment on My13 News!!! I love it when you say: "Oh My Stars", can't get enough of it, Maria!!!

Anyways, writing to let you know, that I think you have "very" interesting and "very" coool!! discussions about a range of topics including the "Body_Worlds" exhibit. FASCINATING!!
Topics about Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Science are truly interesting and a subject of great astonishment and wonder. When you look at the "Body Worlds" exhibit it shows the delicate and complex detail of the human body and the importance to take care of ourselves. Furthermore, given the complex nature of our vital organs such as the human heart, kidneys, or other essentials; it is shows that finding replacement part for our bodies can be somewhat difficult. One of major difficulties of Biomedical Engineering is the research and development of replacement human hearts. As noted in an episode of "NOVA", (PBS science show), one of the major technical challenges concerning artificial hearts is that replacement heart must withstand tremendous amounts of mechnical wear and tear, and the chemical corrosiveness of human blood, i

Hi Maria,
Wanted to add more to your blog, did not know there was a character limit. Here's second half. I think I messed up.
Here goes.
in order to maintain vital lifesupport needs of patients who are in need of replacement human hearts. With this in mind, it shows how important diet, exercise, and lifestyle (smoking, drinking alcohol, high-fat diets) can affect the aspects of longevity and the quality of life. Though I have yet to go to see the "Body Worlds" exhibits, perhaps I might see you there one weekend this summer, I often find books and biomedical educational programs on television to be quite interesting and informative. They are incredibily interesting to watch and sometimes graphic. So if you find knee-joint or hip-joint replacement surgery to be somewhat gross or ugly, don't watch!! These programs sometimes appear on late-nite television. One such, show that appears weekly, on KOCE channel 50 Huntington Beach, called American Health Journal; is an interesting look at different health care subjects concerning everyone. Check it out!! Coool!! Additionally, they will broadcast the show "American Masters, Pete Seeger: The Power of Song"; Sunday June 8, 2008 at 2:00 PM. Check it out!!! I will!!!

Ciao Maria,

I don't know if I would go to a display like this. Did you cover this for FOXLA? I think that the human body is such a beautiful form and those who donate their organs are wonderful in doing so, but not for something like this.

Amore, how about posting some more pictures? I love the ones that you took in Mexico, I went there when I was doing my studies in Architectural Design. Did you climb the structure?

Have a great weekend.

I was leaning towards the discussion of the new world order of "Cannibalization" I/we find ourselves in...

but then to comment better than this I need to read this complete blog; sorry no time now.
