So the former President has made another comment ripe for inquiry and interpretation.  After waxing poetic about the friendship his wife and Senator McCain apparently share, and then musing about a potential general election fight between them, he had this to say (to a group comprised mainly of veterans) during a visit in Charlotte, North Carolina:

“I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country, and people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues, instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics.”

Considering the timing of this remark—in the midst of Barack Obama’s attempt to sufficiently disassociate himself from his seemingly unpatriotic pastor—Bill’s comments strike some as a low blow meant to try to throw Obama, yet again, under the Democratic bus. But Bill’s spokesperson said no no no, these people have it all wrong, and explained it like this:

“Actually, as is indicated by the quote itself, President Clinton was talking about the need to talk about issues, rather than falsely questioning any candidate’s patriotism. He was lamenting that these kind of distractions ‘always seem to intrude’ on political campaigns. This is consistent with his criticism of the ‘politics of personal destruction’ which dates back 16 years.”

So here go my questions (and my apologies in advance for asking so many… I’m in a curious and unrestrained mood at the moment during which my typing is trying desperately to keep up!):

-How do you interpret Bill Clinton’s remarks? Do they cause either Bill or Hillary Clinton to lose credibility or affection in your eyes?

-Now that the dust has settled some on Obama’s Pennsylvania speech, do you think he was able to adequately answer the questions posed to him about his connection to Wright’s rhetorical excesses, or has he lost the support and/or respect you afforded him prior? (Or did the speech merely serve to confirm your feelings about Obama’s character, whether positive or negative?)

-Do you think the current Democratic stalemate—and ensuing bitterness between Clinton and Obama—is ultimately going to be destructive to the Democratic Party as a whole, and beneficial to McCain in the general election?

One last thing… Just as an FYI, I’ve decided not to vote in this general election. I heard an interview with General Patraeus recently during which he said he doesn’t vote because he thinks it’s important to his job function that he remain as neutral as he can. When I heard that, I thought it made a lot of sense… This is the first presidential election during which I’m working as a journalist; I think that knowing I’m not voting is going to allow me to feel as agenda-free as possible. So rest easy knowing I’m all ears… not mouth…

Leelila Strogov,
Not voting and remaining neutral because of something Gen Patraeus said suprises me. I would have thought that was Standard Operating Procedure for responsible news media. Your questions in order...

1. Well... I think Bills remarks show a loyal partnership and a political savvy that is second to none in this country at this time.
2. Senator Obama's speech gave me hope that I think transcended a mere presidential election. Unfortunately it will require more on Senator Obamas part and I think only time will tell.
3. Yes the Democratic stalemate I'm predicting will be part of the cause for Senator Mc Cain being elected by a landslide.

Thankyou Leelila for you comment to me in the blog Stop Blaming the White Man.

Being neutral and voting have nothing to do with each other if you learn to separate them. I think you should reconsider, voting is all we have as a say in this crumbling country.

I think Bill is right i that issues should be first. Unfortunately for him, he and his wife don't heed what he's preaching. With that said, I think it's vital to call someone out who you know is lying, is a lier, is unqualified, etc. And no I don't think it'll harm the Clinton's.

I think Obama has his work cut out for him. He lost support that was giving him that thin lead it seems. Honestly, I never had much respect for Obama to begin with. But no, He didn't lose what little credibility he has in my eyes. I still would rather have him as president than Clinton.

I think it can damage the democratic party a bit but not by much. People are so fed up with Bush and in turn the Republican party, that they'll more then likely look past it.

"I’m all ears… not mouth…" now, stogov, what fun is that?!! if your cabinet is filled with wise voices, listening is the right thing to do. do the best you can. if you're right, in the end what is said against you won't amount to anything. if you're wrong ten angels swearing you were right would make no difference. (lincoln wrote that) hillary and barack are smart and are honorable. i don't feel the preacher at barack's church will be a voice in an administration. i do perceive mcCain's wife to be first lady material. i also like barack's wife and i like hillary's husband. i like you too. paramount at this point, i like mcCain's experience.

Leelila,

You'd be completely justified in NOT VOTING for president during the General Election. You are not alone. A NO VOTE is making a statement, in spite of what others say. The same impact occurs when obsessive news coverage "omits" vital information on a story. AND, you need to have a valid choice before you can vote for "the right thing". But, keep listening...

However, propositions and other offices will be decided on the ballot.

STAY HOME '08

how Bill Clinton could call anyone unpatriotic is a joke when he spent his young adult life writing papers on how he loathed the military..anyone with eyes can see Obama is not patriotic or he would have voted for the war as every patriotic person did at that time..if it had gone successfully he would be on the wrong side ..Obama is an unAmerican as it gets from his pastor to his wife not being proud of being an American to the fact he wont even wear a flag pin on his lapel he makes a speech in front of American flags and wont denounce a man who says GOD damn America..and as far as not voting that's a slap in the face of every American soldier who ever laid down their life so you can do so ..that just shows you support Obama or Clinton..so stay home anyway we can keep either one of those unAmerican liberal a-holes out of office is a plus for this country and the men and women who serve it..

statueman -- not even remotely SOP, believe it or not. interesting interpretation of events... you might be right on the mccain factor, though at least till now, a far greater number of democrats have been showing up to vote when compared to republicans. but that could certainly change in the general election when republicans feel they have more to potentially lose. and my pleasure on the comment. issues of race and class and how they often unfairly define and divide us, is something that's always been of particular interest to me.

o0lux0o -- you have a point, and a good one, but i think that right now i'm more comfortable knowing i'm not rooting for anyone and have no biases when it comes to disseminating information. i know some people are really good at compartmentalizing, but i don't know that i am one of them. my personal life and opinions and approaches greatly overlap with my professional life. i don't see the two as so distinctly separate, i.e. the reporter vs. the person; they're one and the same. interesting take on clinton and obama and what's to come in the general election too. it's amazing to see such a wide diversity of perspectives. this whole process has been so trippy, i don't think anyone can do anything besides guess... no one honest will pretend to know what's going to happen.

freezer -- i take it you're a democrat...

peter_palmer -- well, what an overall pleasant and positive guy you are... there wasn't one negative in that paragraph of yours that covered a total of seven people. how wonderful is that? thank you...

you trying to keep me from voting? ha. anyway, i appreciate the support.

craftyguy -- why oh why do you always have to be so contentious? were you born in the middle of an argument??? a car crash, maybe??? while you have every right to take insult or injury to my decision not to vote (i understand your reasoning, though i disagree with it), you happen to be wrong about my preferences. my feelings about obama, clinton and mccain are pretty much divided in equal measure at this point. for the record.

you cant have division when choosing a political candidate ..its who ever represents your views most you only get one choice..and being a child of immigrants you think you would respect the right this country has given you like your grandparents did and one of the reasons they came here ..and no i wasnt born in an argument Ive just been fighting against liberals and people who just don't give a damn all my life ..the problem with people like you and others is you take too much for granted and don't understand what you have the fact you can come out here or anyone for that matter and speak your mind no matter what is a gift given to you by all who founded and defended your right to do so ..to say you don't give a damn and not vote when you can is a disgrace ..your vote just doesnt effect only the United States but the entire free world its a right that millions around the world would give anything to have..and maybe you don't like what i say because you know deep down I'm right and sometimes the truth hurts ..i don't bow down or or placate anyone nor do i expect them to do the same with me ..but resorting to denigration well that's a typical chick thing ..it makes them ugly even when they are hot ...like you..peace

Craftyguy,

I was raised a liberal and switched to conservative later when it became obvious that the acceptance of abortion and homosexuality were key subjects that made the democratic party and the liberal view of the world alittle too misguided for me. I decided that I would rather be around bible thumpers and self righteous individualist because Conservatives at least had a point of reference from which I could disagree with them using agreed upon source material... namely the bible.

Oh and that Nazi war memorabilia you ordered his in, will that be cash or charge.

Well, it is coming down to big money buying this election. This is a terrible sign that our Democracy is indeed deader than a doornail, with riga setting. To think we have the worst Republican, Worst two Democratic candidates that do not represent the bulk of Americans who generally are Centrist-Conservative leaning as a whole indeed has displayed a dead democracy that can be bought with big money on a whim...The Revolution may be sooner then many think. Thomas Jefferson once said "The Tree Of Liberty Is Often Nurtured By The Blood Of Patrons," so think carefully.

P.S. I posted some funny poems this month...enjoy!

craftyguy -- i was actually kidding around with you; sorry if it came across as denigrating. it wasn't meant to. i can assure you i'm not taking anything for granted, though. i'm simply making a sacrifice for what i deem to be the right cause (one of neutrality and serving the facts rather than any given agenda).

sebar -- i know many, like you, are disheartened by this election platter; but then why such fierce interest and engagement?

HOTTER THAN HOT. A BEAUTIFUL AND SMART WOMAN IN A SEA OF CREAM PUFFS.

1) BILL CLINTON CLEARLY HAD IT OUT FOR OBAMA. HE SHOULDNT HAVE DENIED IT. THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH HIM TRYING TO KNOCK THE GUY. HE'S IN HILLARY'S WAY. AS SOON AS HE'S OUT OF HER WAY HE CAN AFFORD TO PLAY NICE. THAT'S THE CLINTON MACHINE.
2) OBAMA NOW JUST LOOKS LIKE A PASSIVE AND WEAK GUY WHO CAN'T HANDLE BEING PRESIDENT. IF HE CAN'T STAND UP TO REV. WRIGHT IS HE GOING TO STAND UP TO OSAMA BIN LADEN?
3) YES SIREEE. DEMS ARE TAKING WAY TOO LONG TO DECIDE ON THEIR CANDIDATE. THIS IS A GIFT FOR MCCAIN.

craftyguy -- c'mon... i lived in switzerland and can assure you the swiss are neither pompous nor gutless (they might be a little too even-tempered/bland for my taste, but hey, there's no crime in that).

johntheman -- ha on the clinton machine. i'm glad you accept it for what it is. your criticism of obama is the one i think his camp is most afraid of... and yes, it seems like all this democratic bloodletting is getting to them. let's see if and when they start recovering.

freezer -- i guess you're taking clinton at his word...

One of the political games that people play in life seems to be the veiled insult. It works great in a work setting. You talk about a person without mentioning the persons name. State in such a way that you can deny referring to that person and then when the targetted person starts to protest then he or she looks like the culprit.

Fascinatingly enough this trick works better on someone above you or even with you in status than against someone beneath you. Bill Clinton struck while the iron was hot and I believe it backfired on him because it made folks wonder why a former president was making a backwards insult against a mere candidate.
