There’s a word that’s being thrown around a lot in this whole Spitzer debacle: Schadenfreude. The word is of German derivation (schaden = damage, freude = joy), and literally means the enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others. It’s an uncommon word for what, unfortunately, describes a pretty common emotion. When it comes to the popularity of everything from Monica-gate to Britney Spears’ failings, we as a society love to watch and make fun of and revel in the painful moments that the publicly successful occasionally have to… well… publicly endure. In Eliot Spitzer’s case the rewards are particularly sweet because of the haughty and self-righteous carriage with which he glided through his political life. That said, I’m determined not to yield to the temptations of Schadenfreude. Yes, what Eliot did was plainly stupid… Yes, he engaged in a complete lapse of judgment… Yes, his actions will even be deemed by some as supremely pathetic. But he’s a fellow human being. And how many of us can say we aren’t guilty of ever lying, or being hypocritical, or even being downright arrogant about something we really had no right to be arrogant about? And how many of us can also say that there is not a moment in our history (and perhaps even quite a few), that if singled out, circled, and zoomed in upon, would not make for one moronic, ridiculous and even pathetic, image.

So for Eliot’s sake, and for the sake of sincerity, and yes… even for the less noble sake of protecting my own karmic well being, this is the message I’d like to send out to the guy:

---------------

The game isn’t over till you’re dead. This is the land of opportunity, redemption and transformation. Get some good psychiatric help and do as you’re told. Stay with your wife if you’re in love with her, leave if you’re not. If she leaves you, accept it as your fate, move on, and make your alimony and child support payments on time. (Then find someone you adore who loves you as you are--after your psychiatrist has given you the thumbs up, but while you’re still down in the public eye--and marry her fast.) Be a good husband. Be a great father. Become active in a charity you're passionate about. Tour the college circuit and give speeches on opportunity, redemption, transformation, and the rewards of acquired humility and wisdom. Be sincere. Write a book. When you’re done, join one of the television news networks as a political commentator. You’ll be just fine.

---------------

Feel free to take this opportunity to write your own message to Mr. Spitzer. No pressure from me to be kind, either. Not all of us live in glass houses… And chances are, the less kind you are, the more entertained I’ll be, anyway… ;-)

I'd tell him to get back in touch with his family, make amends, and stay in his job. That said, ut I think the DLC Democrats on Hillary's end will want him out now. This minor scandal brings back memories of that whole other late 90s unreality in the Clinton White House... a place we just can't afford to go back to right now.

But even with pressure in his own party, he should stick this out. He may have committed a sin, but not a serious crime that undermines the public trust. He didn't exchange money and illicit sex for contracts, or political favors. So in this case, his private life should be respected.

Sure he's endemic of a hypocrisy on so many levels in our political culture, but that's a different issue. The timing of this news seems more about getting ahead of a bad news cycle, thus distracting the public from far more serious issues, but not as salacious.

STRUCTURING is the key charge here! Not prostitution!

WHAT?? ARE YOU GUYS KIDDING ME?

Leelila, I like you, but I must strongly disagree with you on this one. Yes, we're all human, but, we must ALL pay for our mistakes. Sins are forgiven, but consequences are never avoided. This guy gets no pity from me, and I'll tell you why, which brings me to Jay_Kumar (luv that name btw)...

"not a serious crime that . He didn't exchange money and illicit sex for contracts, or political favors. So in this case, his private life should be respected."

WRONG. Do taxpayers pay his salary? Then how can you say that its not a crime that undermines the public trust? I don’t want my husbands hard earned money that we could use for food, for one, to be spent on WHORES! So NO, in this circumstance IT IS THE PUBLICS BUSINESS CAUSE HE’S PAYING HOOKERS FOR SEX WITH OUR TAXES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s not like he got it for FREE. That would’ve been totally different.

I am OUTRAGED that my tax dollars are hooking unscrupulous dirty disgusting politicians up with sex when OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS, PARKS, and God only knows what else across the country, are falling apart. FIRE THIS RETARD AND HIRE PEOPLE WHO WONT SPEND OUR THEIR SALARY/OUR TAX DOLLARS ON HOOKERS! And maybe, just maybe, hire someone who will do something positive and constructive for our Nation as well.

*.....spend THEIR salary/our tax dollars....

Wait, did I say SPEND??? HA HA! I mean, WASTE!!!

If you’re gonna screw around, don’t pay for it!

Damn, what an idiot.

well dasvics, you make a good point. why buy the cow when milk is sold by the gallon. why buy a gallon when... hold on, i lost the relevance of my analogy... anyway, yeah don't pay cash for sex. order a pizza and tell her she's beautiful. and don't waste money on flowers unless the plants come with roots so they can flower again.

jay -- well, the resignation is in... but i do see your point. it's still not entirely clear to me whether he used personal or public funds to pay for this stuff either. i'm assuming the former, which would certainly make things a little more palatable, but i'm not entirely sure yet.

craftyguy, dfdeportation, and paul_d - ha!

dasvics -- i hear you. and to be honest, i was kind of half kidding. that said, i do believe there's room for growth and transformation in every situation. i mean, let's face it, spitzer's certainly going to pay in a big way for what he did. he's going to go through a lot of pain and agony before things get better for him. and his life will never be the same. but he's a smart guy and i'm kind of hoping that in the end, he'll manage to turn things around for himself.

paul_d -- "order a pizza and tell her she's beautiful." now that's a line to remember... :-)

ha ha...Paul_D you are too funny. But he didn’t pay his whore in cash, that's another problem for some because of the accounts he set up. right? He should've used cash?
Don’t get me wrong, no matter what it's wrong, but it wouldn’t piss me off if he was getting it for free cause then at least he’s not wasting the salary our taxes provide him with. That’s the way I look at it.
What anyone does in the privacy of their bedroom is their business, as long as it doesn’t involve children or animals or paid for with my tax $$$, I don’t care. I know it’s wrong, but nothing to be mad over and it should remain private.
And pizza with compliments works just fine, but I don’t know about plants. Then agains, as long as my husband gave them to me, it'd work just fine :-)

OK, I get what you're saying Leelila, and you are an incredibly kind person. Any guy would be lucky to have you :-)

Leelila, how very sweet of your title. Now here is my title for the topic...ready?

"Dear Mister Jerkwad - please go take a flying hike counterclockwise stage left." Oh and tell him to make sure to have a good TRIP on the way out the door, like a permanent trip to NYC's MCC facility...cheers!

That's the girl. Well, at least now I know what a $1000 an hour "escort" looks like.

She's very pretty, not bad. I heard on the news that she wants to be a singer. Good for her, maybe this exposure will help launch her career. I haven’t heard her sing, but I honestly hope she makes it, she's only 22 and I feel bad for her too.

It's really interesting that as I watched him confess I thought "Wow... what a professional way to apologize and resign." It's all so inconclusive for me... I mean was he using call girls before or after he was busting the rings? Did he get sucked in by a devious plot of seduction or did he go out looking for it? Why did he fall to the very thing he was so strong against? I mean it doesn't seem as simple as it's being presented... seems like they've got something else on him.

Throw an honest man into a corrupt system and the chances are he'll either adapt or fall. Perhaps his real calling was to be on the Vice Squad for the NYPD. I remember meeting a couple of Vice Cops from the NYPD when I was stationed in Korea... after showing them around downtown Seoul they offered me a job.

Lee:

His problem is that he has been an arrogant SOB, his fall is just his chance to start healing. His opportunity as you say to learn and try again.

I believe that many of our problems come from not being able to feel love for each other in a genuine way. We live in mental worlds (prisons of thoughts and opinions), not able to really connect meaningfully person to person. We often only feel fulfilled when engaging in sex, because it is a tangible somewhat transcendental experience. We long for meaningful connection to those around us we adore, enjoy and love!

With the enlightenment that is coming it will be possible to feel true love that is satisfying and fulfilling.

Now Eliot's true character can show, has he real love and humility in his heart. Does he love others, can he be unselfish.

He can see now that his vision of himself was just a weak mental construct that did not accurately reflect his inner condition and thus could not withstand the tides of temptation.(which is the case with most of us, so there is a lesson for us all here!)

We must become out True Selves, cast off these false identities. Out true selves are blissful pure eternal spirit, unmistakably LOVE.

xoxoxo

personally 1000 for a girl like that, not worth it. she's cute, but not 1000 cute. and why does she do this? cuz their are guys dumb enough to give her a grand for 15 min's worth of "work". lol. life is cruel. some of us work so hard to make a living and have so little to show for it. then this girl does so little for her money, and is making bank. why god! why???

personally i think this spitzer is a douch, i hope his wife gives him a good kick in the groin, and dumps his a$$ and i think he wasted his money. he could have gotten a better looking girl for that type of cash.
