It's the latest moniker for the duo throughout cyberspace. And let's face it -- just a month ago, it would have been considered an obvious and undeniable fact of Hillary’s presidential campaign: Bill was among the greatest assets in her war chest. The former president might as well have been a walking magnet when it came to attracting Democratic voters. All he’d have to do was show up, and in would follow a roomful of voters, readily transformed into Hillary fans with one subtle encounter of that invisible electric current known as Bill Clinton.

But… this is Election 2008 where the only constant appears to be change. And considering the exit-poll data from Saturday's voting in South Carolina, where Obama’s numbers doubled those of Hillary’s, it seems like things are changing fast. When asked to rate the importance of Bill Clinton's campaigning as a factor in their voting decisions, 58% said that the former president's campaign efforts were important. But these voters also said – surprise! – that they voted for Obama, 48% to 37%. So it seems like the gusto (or disgusto, depending on how you look at it) with which he campaigned, turned off at least a few former in-the-bag voters. He then pushed the envelope even further on Saturday evening, after it was clear Obama was the night’s victor, by making that ever-tactful remark that "Jesse Jackson won South Carolina in 84 and 88.” It was a comment that many read as an underhanded attempt to label Obama as the mere “black guy” among the presidential contenders. The sting was that much worse coming from a man who, during his presidency, so thoroughly embraced the African-American community, and vice versa.

What followed was a lot of hand-wringing from all corners of government and the press, along with the swift and vigorous movement of two high-powered Democrats into the Obama camp: Caroline Kennedy, who compared Obama’s ability to inspire to that of her father, JFK; and Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy, allegedly completely deaf to the vehement pleas and protestations of Bill himself.

But for all the brouhaha, the biggest and least containable question to emerge from the Clinton-Obama escapades this past week seems to be whether or not Bill is fit for the position of "first laddie." Is it reasonable to expect someone with his lack of restraint and comfort in the DC political landscape, to be even remotely capable of taking a hands-off approach when it came to his wife’s job? Or would we be looking at something closer to a co-presidency? And if so… would this scenario be welcome, or deeply troublesome and rife with conflicts-of-interest? Curious to know what you guys think…

Finally, do you think this is an issue Obama should or will address in the days ahead? Right now, polling shows he’s trailing Hillary in most of the critical February 5th states. If he decides to pop that big question, it would make for a very bold – and dicey – move. But he just may determine that he’s got more to win than lose by testing the legs of the Clinton table with such heavy baggage…

if i were Mr Obama's campaign manager i would be out milking this for all its worth ..it shows the true Clinton's..liars ..who don't give a damn about African Americans unless they need their vote. other than that they don't give a damn and are all smoke and mirrors ..it causing complete division in the democratic party and nothing short of an Obama endorsement when all's said and done will help Mrs Clinton.and she will be easily defeated in the general election thanks to bubba.she will lose most black support by blacks holding a grudge or just not caring for a person who has racially called them inferior..this is also a great chance for Mr Obama..who should look forward to the 2012 election now that he is being known by most of America and between Clinton and Obama he the better person..so thanks to Bill Clinton he has single handily not only sabotaged his wife but racially split the democratic party ...same ol Bill..always putting his cigars where they don't belong..

So okay, I seem to see your point Crafty, but are you saying that a kid who dealt drugs, hides his middle Muslim name and loves Socialistic commie policies is going to be much better? And even worse, the turncoat Governator supports this bum too. I hope most black people that vote for him based on his color also know they are voting for their own destruction as well, cause there is no such thing as something for nothing. This guy will stiff everyone in the end by stripping people of their freedoms. The only one's who will benefit are crappy people like Tinselturd commie Sean Penn and Danny Glover, another sellout traitor to America Tinselturd. They can all go drop dead for all I care.

once again you have me twisted ..i for one don't support either or any democrat..I'm just saying that he can use this to his advantage..and kill two birds with one stone ..Clinton's going to win the nomination anyway that's a given..and she sure inst going to pick Obama as her running mate so why not use it as a bounce for the next time because there is no way on earth Clinton will win with or without him..and those tinsel turds you talk about are all democrats..Hollywood liberals..you know the ones you see them marching on the picket lines..

When it comes to a description of Bill Clinton in the race to get his wife Hillary in, you can take the "t" out of the word "assets", and that will be an accurate description of what he is to Hillary's campaign. And a big one for all I care! Now I see a horse trailer with 4 flat tires on it! Does anyone know who it belongs to? There's an animal smoking a stinky cigar in it! Anyone ready to claim it? (Hee Hee!) It's going to the crusher if nobody claims it! (Uh Oh!)...Oh No!

Actually Craftyguy my friend and Conservative compatriot, I do not have you twisted. I think we are actually more aligned on many issues then we really understand. Yeah some Liberals on the lines but conservative Literary talents as well, and I had a great chance to dialog with many and they are far closer to your position then you can imagine.

I think once we get the local conservative studios rumored to go in North Western Simi Valley, that may well change a great many things. My own blacklisting originally is because of my open conservative stance on many issues including especially the current Hollywood, and I am not the only one, as there are many others. I think a balanced entertainment industry rather concentrating on real stories rather than politically maligned ones will be what is required to balance the entertainment landscape.

sebar i understand all of your angst..and how you feel towards the Hollywood elite being a conservative myself ..Hollywood has always pushed their tree hugging immoral ideas down our throat why the republican party and conservitism is played off as the ideas of the rich when in reality nobody can afford to be liberal unless your rich..its real easy to sit in a million dollar home and say oh the poor this or we need to save that..screw all that those people are so out of the loop its a joke..those are the people who back the democrats ..they all want to become captain save a ho..be in the lime light have to sit center stage they have no knowledge of any real problems that matter or what faces the common man and the media has conned us all into believing the democratic party is for the people the democrats are all about big government and taxes in being in our lives they stand against everything the founding fathers fought and died for..this country wasn't conceived so you can sit on your butt and do nothing and get paid it was set up so anyone no matter who you are can achieve anything you put your heart and mind to do even if you fail you are given the right ..that's what America is all about

Obama takes big risk on driver's license issue
Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau

Monday, January 28, 2008

(01-28) 04:00 PST Washington -- Sen. Barack Obama easily won the African American vote in South Carolina, but to woo California Latinos, where he is running 3-to-1 behind rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, he is taking a giant risk: spotlighting his support for the red-hot issue of granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

It's a huge issue for Latinos, who want them. It's also a huge issue for the general electorate, which most vehemently does not. Obama's stand could come back to haunt him not only in a general election, but with other voters in California, where driver's licenses for illegal immigrants helped undo former Gov. Gray Davis.

craftyguy, sebar, mystere and dfdeportation, all interesting points. that's interesting in terms of obama and the driver's license issue. the kennedy endorsement is supposed to help him with both the latino and union populations, so i guess he may be trying to bolster the effect.

mr. e., thank you... and thanks for warning me too that it's coming. may have otherwise been deemed a "suspicious package."

freedomfree, i guess one would call this freedom of expression? for both you and the dog, of course.

Hi Leelilia, On the question of there being a co-presidency if Hillary’s elected, I’d have to think that in a way, there would be. Who doesn’t talk to their spouse and take their opinion seriously? On the other hand, why didn’t anyone ever ask that question of all the other Presidents in history? Has anyone wondered if we’re currently in a co-presidency with Bush? Is Laura giving him advice that he’s listening to and acting upon? Didn’t Saddams sons have pictures of Jenna and Barbara, what mother would be content when a psychopath’s threatening her daughters? What about Reagan or any other President or world leaders? If anyone believes that men don’t talk to their wives and take into consideration their views on any and every issue, can I lmao?

Leelila,

I forgot to let you know that the mailing address is from Cypress, since there are security concerns to be dealt with, which is a smart move that Fox has done. I hope you find the interview interesting and informative.

craftyguy, are you really under the illusion that republicans care about issues relating to the poor or middle class? they don't. believe me. i had a friend who worked in government and she said the whole goal of the republican party is to keep the elite elite and keep everyone else "in their place" so that they can continue to do their low-class jobs for low wages and allow the elite to live the high life and run the country "as things should be." why do you think the republican party wants illegal immigrants, but doesn't want to grant them any status in this country, even not driver's licenses. because this way, they will still be here and do the jobs that no one else wants, picking up the garbage, and cleaning the houses, and fixing the tiles of the higher classes all without real wages, health insurance or benefits of any kind. all the republicans want is a way to continue exploiting these people for their own sake. i get the sense you are exactly one of these people. forget sending them home. you just want them to shut up, do their jobs, and live in the poorest most undignified conditions, all because they illegally crossed the border to escape their impoverished conditions.

I CAN'T DECIDE WHAT IS WORSE, HAVING BILL BE A BUSY BEE IN THE WHITE HOUSE TRYING TO RUN THE COUNTRY THROUGH HILLARY OR HAVING BILL COMPLETELY IDLE IN THE WHITE HOUSE CHASING SKIRTS AND KEEPING HILLARY SO WORRIED THAT SHE CAN'T FOCUS ON RUNNING THE COUNTRY.

I think much of Bill's bloom of being an ex-President has come off the rose with his tactics in this election campaign. He doesn't seem to be carrying himself with any sort of aura that an ex-President would have. Getting into shouting matches with reporters wasn't smart, and basically saying that it's not shocking that blacks vote for Obama and women vote for Hillary didn't make sense when more white people voted for Obama than they did for Hillary in South Carolina.

hello dasvics! i totally agree with you. most presidents do and will continue to consult with their spouses on many an important issue. my suspicion, though, is that bill and hillary no longer have a traditional marriage; i don't know that there's much pillow talk these days. instead, i think what they have is more of a business partnership in which both are highly motivated in shaping their joint legacy, and in taking control of how they'll be described in the history books and textbooks and biographies of the future. because of this, i think that should hillary win the general election, bill could try to take a very central role in the presidency. this is definitely unusual considering we elect one president, not two (and also considering we've set presidential term limits for a reason). on problem, for example, could emerge if an anonymous donor made a large contribution to the bill clinton library, and then expected some favor in return from the executive branch; if it's granted, we may never be the wiser. since bill has so many entrenched connections in washington, these potential dangers multiply exponentially. that said, i'm not necessarily against the whole idea, i just think it's one that needs to be thought through. there are a new and unusual set of issues to think about and weigh against the other sets of issues we'll face with the other candidates... do you see what i mean? in any case, you never have to worry about misspelling my name. i accidentally do it all the time... ;-)

mr. e, thank you, again! i look forward to receiving it.
