I have a problem whenever my constitutional rights seemed threatened. I personally don't own a gun ... I don't hunt ... do target practice ... collect them ... or feel the need to protect myself with one. I do however, find solace knowing that if any of those circumstances change in my life I have the right to obtain one.  We already have laws prohibiting convicted felons from owning firearms. ...such people don't obtain weapons the traditional way. We don't need to treat the symtom, but the source ...  we need tougher penalties for crimes committed with a firearm .... special laws when such weapons are used against our police force ... only when the punishment is so severe that the thug will think twice before using a firearm will you see a drop in crime in this area.   True, there are exceptions to every rule but overall, i have no doubt that if the punishment for committing a crime with a firearm was severe ... the crime level would drop dramatically.  If we can stop the majority of people from parking in handicap spots because the fines are so severe, we can certainly figure out some punishment to deter the use of guns. It's been said many times before ... guns don't kill people, people kill people ... lots of truth in that sentence ... deal with the people.

I agree, 100 percent, LJ. I, like you, don't own a gun, or hunt, but, have friends and relatives who do. Taking away the law abiding citizen's right to bear arms is utterly ridiculous. That will simply put more power in the hands of the gun wielding criminal. And, of course, the illegal black market gun dealers.

Blaming Philly's ILLEGAL gun problems on the NRA and such, is nonsense. It's almost as if these politicians are passing blame, because they have failed in their efforts to control the ILLEGAL gun problem in their city.

Make the crime, NOT worth the time!

It always makes sense to create legislation that removes guns from the public. This way, it's much harder to keep criminals and politicians (pardon the rudundency) in check. Besides, there is no better way to create a huge black market in gun sales, driving up price and demand and increased gun violence. It will also help make the honest people much better targets. It's always good to rob, rape or kill somebody who is unarmed. It reduces the chance that the criminal might actually get hurt during the encounter. So yes, it always makes sense to keep the public unarmed.

I don't care if the criminal cares about the penalty ... the fact is, if the penalty is severe enough we won't have to deal with them again. Banning weapons will never work ... these thugs don't get them the conventional way to begin with. ...and the thug will have to wonder if the house he's invading has a legal weapon yielding occupant. Tougher criminal laws that are "enforced" will lower the crime rate through attrition.
