"FLYING COCKROACH HELPING FARMERS!"

Hi All,

When I heard this headline, all I could think about was my time spent in Arizona during my college years, and my own personal experience with cockroaches.  They weren't good, to put it mildly.  Not sure what was worse-- the time a "flying cockroach" flew into my forehead, ricocheted into my eye, then got stuck in my hair (I was going out, so it was kind of teased, with hairspray).  I could feel it's nasty legs squirming into my scalp, and trying to run, but he couldn't--- oh man, I was horrified, but didn't want to touch him, so I couldn't get him out!

An even more brutal cockroach memory-- the time I came home, turned on the lights in my kitchen, and saw a cockroach scuttle into the bottom of my roommates answering machine (it was the early 90's, voicemail, what was that?)  I kind of forgot about it, until a few days later, when I literally saw HUNDREDS of baby cockroaches climbing single-file out of the answering machine, ready to start their new life in my kitchen.  It was like a horror movie, I was beyond traumatized, and still can't think about that... in fact, this is the first time I have told the story since it happened.  I feel sick right now.

Well I did, until this article about Flying Cockroaches helping Farmers-- Now I'm coming around a bit.

"Loathed by homeowner and restaurateur, the lowly cockroach is gaining some respect in the agricultural community."

This little critter eats pests and their eggs off the leaves of crops in Texas.  They are hungry little guys, apparently bigger eaters than any other kind of insect pest control they've tried.  So there you go, some people hate snakes, others hate spiders.  I hate cockroaches, until tonight :)

Although, I have to tell you about the time I saw one at 5th and Market-- it was the size of a teacup Yorkshire Terrier...

Ciao,

KL

The first time I ever saw one was when I was stationed at Jacksonville Fla.

They called them "Palmetto Bugs".

They were a lot bigger than a German Cockroach which are the ones around here.

But they're all related; if you google cockroaches, you'd be surprised at the different types.

I like your dramatic featured photo here. Very "Buffy." Kerri-Lee the Cockroach Slayer. It could have been- if the writers strike hadn't ended.

And... when you're conversing with someone...and they ask what you've been up to, you can say "last night , I googled a cockroach".

And they will probably leave you alone forever.
