Bill Clinton last night praised Barack Obama for “hitting one out of the ballpark” when he picked Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate. But I heard several Democrats say they thought Biden’s subsequent Pepsi Center acceptance speech was flat, at times inauthentic sounding. “He sounded like a political hack,” one Democrat who closely watched the speech told me; this Democrat was bothered in particular by the laundry list of complaints about John McCain’s positions, followed by the rhetorical refrain:  “That’s not change, that’s more of the same.”

To me, Biden’s speech did sound conflicted (thus perhaps giving rise to that complaint that it sounded inauthentic). On the one hand, the Delaware senator was ripping McCain. On the other hand, he was calling McCain by his first name. “John thinks the economy is doing well…John wants to give tax breaks to corporations” etc. Biden and McCain have been long-time colleagues, in the Senate, a place that prides itself on its clubby-genteel house rules. Biden even admitted “John McCain is my friend.”  So, he probably is conflicted about pillorying one of his long-time Senate buddies. And when he called McCain by his first name, he sort of personalized the Republican in a way that took some of the edge off his attack – which I can’t imagine the Democrats want him to do. They want an attack-dog, off-the-leash….

The best part of Biden’s speech was the heartfelt introduction given by his son – and then Biden’s teary-eyed reaction to it. That seemed real – as did his personal recollections and embrace of his family.

But it’ll take more than Biden to provide the Democrats with the “bounce” in poll numbers that they hope to get out of the convention. So far, the Democratic ticket has not seen a bounce in its poll numbers - the virtually automatic 5-10 point jump that normally comes with a good convention and all the publicity it garners (part of that might be attributable to the very aggressive GOP campaign to spoil the Democratic party which I blogged about two days ago). In fact, a few polls (Rasmussen and Gallup) have shown McCain continuing to close the gap on Obama even during the Democrats’ convention. Not  a good sign....for Democrats.

Bottom-line, if anyone hit one out of the ballpark Wednesday night – speech-wise – it was Bill Clinton. Now his speech was, so far, the most masterful one of the convention…not only in purely technical speech-making terms but also possibly in terms of acting; after all, wasn’t it Bill who was supposedly the least reconciled to Hillary’s defeat at the hands of Obama?  Whether it was an act or not, Bill gave the convincingly generous speech that Hillary was supposed to have given the night before to heal the Obama-Clinton wounds.

I ran into Lt. Gov. John Garamendi Wednesday, at the Pepsi Center, making the rounds of the radio talk shows. His pitch was that his party is still in transition; that the Clinton-istas are in the painful mourning phase of their loss - not to worry, in time, they’ll be fully on board with Obama.

Maybe, maybe not. The real danger is NOT that the Clinton-istas would vote for McCain so much as they would not open their checkbooks to Obama, walk precincts or man phone banks for him.

If it's any solace to Democrats, it’s the same dilemma McCain faces with his own party’s hard-line conservative wing.

hit one out of the park??the whole convention has been foul..isn't there one democrat that hast had it hard in their life and is that the reason anyone should vote for someone?I mean I'm as sick as hell hearing about McCain being a POW as the next guy but now every democrat who speaks is doing exactly what they claim McCain is doing..but for them its OK..the only thing missing has been Tiny Tim who lost his legs in Iraq trying to save a baby seal from the KKK only to return home to find his parents got killed in an airplane crash due to the fact it didn't have enough fuel to continue the flight of dropping care packages to AIDS patience in the depleted rain forests ..God bless us everyone

John, you sound inauthentic. I don't believe for a moment that a democratic delegate told you they had a problem with the statement, “That’s not change, that’s more of the same.” Next you will be telling us many delegates "told" you they will vote for McCain or are switching parties. John, you have evolved from journalist to spin doctor for the right wing. How sad.
Bidens speech was dead on and anyone paying attention to the world around them could hear the truth in it. Sorry to disappoint you John but plenty of Dems that supported Hillary are now supporting Obama with money and time. Myself included.

Craft_ none of the dems have ever had it hard? You mean hard life? That is one of the dumbest comments ever. Your man Bush has never had to work hard a day in his life. EVERYTHING has been handed to him.

I thought Biden's speech was truthful, but it wasn't pretty. He's a fine person, and he will steamroller his opponent (lets say Mitt Romney) in a debate, but his speaking style is a little dry.

Crafty, your Tiny Tim story was clever, but, unfortunately, a little too close to home.

even the left wing liberals on MSNBC said Biden's speech was a let down..he tripped more the an LA KING left winger..maybe he couldn't believe what he was saying either..we all know Clinton had to suck up his wife cost them millions ..the democrats have nothing so they are trying to turn this election into a civil rights movement instead of what it is right vs wrong ..and right is right and left is wrong

Look what I found! Your anchoring is bad. You should attend APTRA's anchor camp.

Come on Mickie...why are you bringing back an old You Tube video posted last February? Stay on the real issues here! Besides, he was not on television anchoring duties; he was on internet duty, which is more loosely structured.

John, I'm ready to see what comes up in the RNC, and I think this election is going to be a tight race. I can understand Joe Biden not wanting to smear John McCain, since he goes back a long way with him. I don't think Bill Clinton was very sincere; to me, there was something a bit off, which seems to support the internet rumors that Hilary plans to spoil Barack Obama's bid for the White House, albeit in a very subtle way.

The fact that the Dems didn't get a bounce out of Bidens addition to Ceasars cabinet is the beginning of the end. The slide is on and they will slip out of sight by November. Goodbye
Ceasar don't let your toga hit you on the tush on your way down. Good blog John, sorry Mickey Mouse but Obamas the wrong man for these troubled times.

The Dali Bama is the real deal. Not a token like Colin Powell or Condi Rice, wouldn't you agree?

Now, was there supposed to be some kind of orgasmic event at the end of Ceasars' speech?

What happened?

Well, the rumors have come up that "Johnny Mac" has a big surprise that will give "Camp Obama" a huge "caining". Obama's toga will get slashed, now that Sarah Palin is the Vice Presidential running mate for McCain. As I was writing this, the official news broke out! Let the real campaign begin! By the way, Newsmax did drop hints a while back that Palin might be a contender for the Vice Presidential running mate.

"Biden was given the due excitement, no more, and after a good fire and brimstone start, I think he illustrated exactly why content can bog down a perfectly good harangue. The "more of the same" chant did not resonate, and the specifics were not integrated into the speech well, snagging the required righteous anger that should have infused the Pepsi Center at critical moments." -- Rachel Pelham, Democratic delegate, Pomona College student

"Schwada is not to be trusted", Anonymous Source

She is a college student? That is your bite?? Good grief. How many delegates did you have to interview before you got someone to say what you wanted to hear and then report it. One delegate griping and that is a general consensus? Nonsense. Besides the bite reads surprisingly like YOUR WRITING. Mmmm..... I wonder?

don't wonder for long - rachel pelham's "bite" is actually on her blog...on this website. pomona college student, an elected democratic delegate. those are the facts. not speculation and conspiracy theories.

good question.
-Schwada, so you found the the proverbial needle in the haystack? You only mentioned one negative comment in your blog and ignored positive feedback from other delegates. So much for "fair and BALANCED"
-So how many delegates DID you interview before you found the comment you wanted to include in your report. Conspiracy theory? You are being questioned about your biased reporting.

You didn't interview the kid? You pulled the comment from her blog? How lazy is that. Did you even confirm that she is actually a delegate and who she claims to be?
- I read in your previous blog that you leave your brain at home when covering a political convention. Well... that is obvious.
And why would you be exhausted at the convention? You only have one report for your one show. Laurel Erikson had several reports each day from the DNC.

by the way, i too am a big fan of laurel erickson. i remember the days when as a print reporter, for the herald-examiner and la times, laurel used to intv me abt stories at city hall. she is one tough journalist.

foxtrapper: you imply i didn't intv. pelham - wrong on that pt....i did intv her and several other delegates for a story i did abt young delegates. you can look pelham up for yourself on the california democ. party website, and you can probably see my story abt her on this website.

also you were mistaken abt the # of stories i did daily. actually it was 2 stories each night for KTTV-ch. 11 Sunday-Thursday (5 days), and 2 stories each night for 5 days for KCOP ch. 13; one story on Saturday for each stn (the Sat. before the convention) and then on Friday (the day after the convention) i did stories for KTTV-ch. 11 7am and 8am morning shows. and then there was blogging...

sorry to disappoint you, foxtrapper, with so many inconvenient facts.

That's me, Nov. 1, 1989, at the Herald-Examiner bureau, LA City Hall...a long-time ago. As a reporter at Fox 11 News, I have covered national political conventions, presidential impeachment hearings and gubernatorial recall campaigns. I've done double-duty as an investigative reporter and, in this capacity, won Golden Mike and Emmy awards. I also have labored in the newspaper biz: LA Herald-Examiner, the LA Times, the San Diego Union, the Arizona Republic and the Riverside Press-Enterprise. I went to UC Berkeley and learned to respect the sharpshooting ability of Alameda County's "blue-meanies" who could hit protesters in the derriere with buckshot from 50 paces. I'm now looking for a wealthy benefactor who will donate their villa in Spain to me and my family.
