The GOP is not giving the Dems any breather; they’re raining everything they’ve got on the Democratic convention parade.

They’ve set up a “Not Ready in ‘08” office in Denver where they’re churning out press releases and attack ads – two of these now circulating are intended to capitalize on the media attention of Hillary Clinton’s speech tonight at the convention. While Hillary is trying spackle over the unity holes in the Democratic party, the GOP ads are trying to enlarge them, by reminding voters of Clinton’s scathing remarks about her rival Barack Obama during the primaries; at one point, you will recall, she said she had the experience to lead, John McCain had the experience to lead…but Obama wasn’t ready for the White House. Now those words are being resurrected by the GOP attack machine…

Also today here in Denver, a sudden flood of former GOP candidates for president. Probably not a coincidence. Mitt Romney will be here….be doing an event at the GOP headquarters in the Mile High City. Our question, if we get a chance to ask it, will be: Is your visit here and your remarks, Mr. Romney, meant to give us a foretaste of how you’ll be working as McCain’s running mate – or are you still trying out for that job, showing off your talent for playing the pit-bull/vice-presidential role in hopes of getting the nod?

Rudy Guiliani also in Denver today, supposedly looking at convention security issues….huh? Anyway, it would not be surprising if the former candidate, if prodded by churlish (my latest favorite word) reporters, took a few swipes at the Democrats.

This GOP attack campaign is not unprecedented. I remember Ann Lewis, Bill Clinton's campaign media boss, holding court in San Diego in 1996, during the GOP convention there, casting aspersions on the GOP for the benefit of any camera-crew or pencil (print reporter) within earshot.

But the GOP’s current relentless attack on Obama is unusual in its magnitude – no more 100 calorie-attack-snacks, this is a full-on, four-course meal they’re serving of irony, derision, humiliation – and, yes, shocking as it may seem – even naysaying.

In the past, it seems there’s been a kind of unspoken gentleman’s agreement that during the other guy’s convention you don’t fall asleep and turn the other cheek (after all the “other guy” is probably going to be wailing on you in prime-time at his convention) but you ease off a bit – you certainly didn’t go balls-out to flatten the tires of his bandwagon, call down hailstorms on his parade, try to knock the tent-poles out from under his circus big-top….(did I miss any corny metaphors???).

Of course, we can expect the Dems at next week’s GOP convention to return the favor.

The GOP is running scared and is proving that they have no class. They know that the democrats have a strong presidential ticket. All of this "not ready" jive is just proving the republican party is not ready change its colors. But let's look at this notion of not being ready.

In 1999, was George W. Bush any more experienced to take office of president? Was George W. Bush ready to lead this country's future? Was George W. Bush ready to change policies that would stablize the economy?

Of course not. But guess what? He got elected anyway. And eight years later, the U.S. has spent more than 20 trilion dollars and has an eleven trillion dollar deficit.

So, how can the GOP be so hypocritical of Obama, when they supported someone with much less experience? Does anyone see a problem with this?

Let's talk some real politics, shall we?

good interview with the speech analyzer John..I thought I was the only one who saw that Clinton stole the convention from Obama and that there is no unity. as she looked like she belonged up there would now only anger Clinton supporters more because not that he not only stole the nomination from her but didn't even consider her for vice president..

Clinton........18,000,000 votes

Biden...............9,200 votes

The better Hillary did, the worse it looked for the Democrats.

John,

Any thoughts on Bill Clinton? Every shot of him during Hillary's speech was of him beaming with pride and joy. I haven't seen him look this happy in a long time. If report of bitterness are true you sure didn't see it on Bill Clinton's face. After speech he mouthed "I'm so proud of her." Thoughts? Maybe our analyst Richard could comment. Wanted to ask that question on the air last night, but we ran out of time. Or are you too busy to comment? Probably. See you tonight at 10pm.

Hey John,

You're the master of the mixed metaphor... but the situation surely calls for one.

This report is no surprise but is breaking my conservative heart even deeper and making me wonder if Colin Powell won't show up and Senator Obama's speech and give him an endorsement and an apology for his party.

This is horrible... deplorable and reeks of some inexorable belief in innate superiority. Somebody call Barbara Bush and Nancy Reagan and ask them if they have enough strength to wield a ruler...

Laurel Erickson's reports have been better. You don't hold a candle to her, and she is actually good on camera!

Can't be bothered to watch you at Ten. Would rather watch paint dry.

laurel is great on camera. in fact, why don't you and i set up a laurel erickson fan club. you can be president. and then i'll help you set up a 401(c)3 entity for watchdogging fox 11 news...so you can get paid to rag on my poor performance all the time. maybe you shud have been there last saturday when i DID NOT get an emmy for investigative reporting (but, shucks, i was nominated - and, you know, if it would've been up to me i would have nominated laurel for her investigative reporting, let her take my place; that emmy committee really screwed up not nominating any of her stories. gotta run, now, foxtrapper. i'm going to go watch the paint dry, or skip stones on the pond, or pick the lint out of my navel...or better yet! read your informative and entertainingly written comments. you've missed your calling. i'll bet you majored in college in cutting critiques and imaginative sarcasm. you are hot!

That's me, Nov. 1, 1989, at the Herald-Examiner bureau, LA City Hall...a long-time ago. As a reporter at Fox 11 News, I have covered national political conventions, presidential impeachment hearings and gubernatorial recall campaigns. I've done double-duty as an investigative reporter and, in this capacity, won Golden Mike and Emmy awards. I also have labored in the newspaper biz: LA Herald-Examiner, the LA Times, the San Diego Union, the Arizona Republic and the Riverside Press-Enterprise. I went to UC Berkeley and learned to respect the sharpshooting ability of Alameda County's "blue-meanies" who could hit protesters in the derriere with buckshot from 50 paces. I'm now looking for a wealthy benefactor who will donate their villa in Spain to me and my family.
