I was at a community meeting Friday night where they were discussing the violent arrest of three suspects after a shooting.

Watch the arrest here

At that meeting, people said they felt race was a central factor in how police treated the suspects. A state representative also brought a flyer to the meeting which they say is only dividing the community further. The flyers were apparently being distributed at schools, according to the state rep.

Here are two shots of the poster (the top and the bottom):

"Guns don't kill people"

"Dangerous minorities do"

State Rep. Curtis Thomas (D) Philadelphia is contacting the state attorney general regarding the matter.

The bottom of the flyer says "Keystone United" with web address www.keystoneunited.com (a state skinhead group). I contacted the group, but haven't heard back.

We are talking about Philly, right??? These criminals belong to a race that is not a minority in Philly. I know that it is not politically correct, but,I would like to know the statistics on violent crimes from the different races that grace our wonderful city.

Wow! Maybe it could've been stated differently..like, "guns don't kill, stupid friggin people do!" I am so tired of the "race" card being used. We are in 2008 people c'mon! When I look at someone I don't look at the skin color, maybe I am one of a kind?????? This world is bad enough without being racial! We need to remember we all have something inside of us called a "heart" and I believe we all have the same color heart...start using that more..not your skin color I am going to comment on this videotaped beating..Yes,I think it is wrong to physically beat someone like that but..........after the week these cops have had and after the fact that these men were stupid enough to be SHOOTING at someone after Officer Liczbinski was just murdered I'd be a little short with my temper too! Shoot or be shot, wouldn't you do it if someone had a gun pointing at you? These cops are trying to make the street of Philly safer and they are getting nowhere-HOW FRUSTRATING! Then we have Mr Sharpton blabbing his big mouth, what is wrong with that man seriously? He claims he is here to support the people, support the city and you know what he is doing??? Just stirring the pot! Was he here to attend Officer Liczbinskis funeral, Officer Cassidys? Officer Skerskys(Skerskis)...I didn't see him OR hear anything from him. Stop making excuses for these criminals, skin color doesn't matter, what they are doing, black or white, hispanic, chinese, indian...anyone can commit these crimes-We need to stop with the black and white crap!

I agree with all of you. I am not a racist but the facts are the facts. See my blogs by clicking on my name.
I hate thugs I don't care what color their skin is I hate them all. If I were a black man I would be outraged at the reputation my brothers are giving me I really would be and I would be speaking out about it. When are real Men and real Mothers going to stand up for what is right even if it means telling people of your own community that they need ot step up to the plate and take responsibility. Bill Cosby is right!!

These racial issues are going to stop when we start to honestly look at why things are the way they are. Enough with the color blind song and dance routine... enough with the Bill Cosby, Al Sharpton, Rev Wright nonsense.

When you look at the area's in your own sphere of influence what do you see that you are or aren't doing that keeps this problem alive? And I think that patronizing know it all statementst like I'm reading alot in these blogs are an indicator of why Philly is the way it is. A closet racist is still a racist even though they don't see it in themselves. If you're one of those prone to accusing black folks of reverse racism then own up to being a double reverse racist because it's insanely circular to keep looking for the racist.

K13071,

It's not bigger than us if we are bigger than it. We can get somewhere if we mark out clearly where we want to be.

We the people inorder to form a more perfect union...

I raised my right hand to protect this with my life and for that got "three meals a day, for which I didn't pay... uniforms for winter, spring and fall OH Gee, I wish I were back in the Aaarrrrmy." Sorry, couldn't resist... love that old movie "White Christmas".

Anywho... we can get somewhere and we must.

ThunderTush,

It is arrogant at best to act and speak as if one group has cornered the market on crime in this country. What annoys me however is that criminals are given one face in the media when you and I both know that the face of other criminals don't appear because of where they live and who they are. Racist areas in our country are like that. I lived in and near St Louis Missouri off and on in my life. Black mens pictures appear much more frequently on the news since in the white community there is more of a trust and cooperation with law enforcement that puts the white criminals away with less fanfare.

This is a racist truth that should hurt but goes unclaimed by those who fear becomine the new minority. I can blush too but not for the unfounded conclusions of people in negligent denial.

I thought that in 2008 we would be better equiped to talk about this subject and let the facts speak for themselves. I am a proud black male and a police officer in this city for the past 6 years and I have to say that all the murders and drug dealers on the streets that I have arrested are black. I don't agree with the flyer because that is just a group of ignorant people taking the 1st amendment and running with it. I have looked at the statistics in the district that I work in and the district that I live in and the add up to violent crimes in this city being done by people of color (blacks, hispanics, asians). To ignor ehtis fact would be a great crime in itself. I have noticed that in this log that no one has addressed the cowards who wear my uniform. They can not be excused for their actions at all! In doing our duties we are supposed to uphold the law and act in a manner that best represent this city. I saw guys i came on the job with acting as if they had a license to beat because we lost one of our own! For them to do that gives the city a free shot to act up because they lost a family member and that is just juvenile.

Ballcop, I think you put it all in perspective for everyone on this blog. It is sad to say but most of the crimes are commited by black men and I think that is what everyone WANTS to say on here but are afraid to. I honestly don't care what skin color you are and I won't be judged for that because no one on here knows me personally. I live my life treating people how I'd want to be treated and skin color does not matter to me but there are A LOT of people with racist remarks due to what they are seeing on tv and people don't want to be honest, they don't want to say how they REALLY feel. You are correct about the "bad cop" syndrome too. I'm glad you as a black man and a cop came forward with this statement. Thank you for doing what you do.

The dicussion of race here comes just after I read a pretty interesting report about "Black America" in The Economist. A drug dealer turned Harvard professor is trying to answer questions people have had for years. Among the questions he asks in the article: "Why are African Americans less prosperous than whites... why do black children not do as well in school... why are so many young black men in jail?" What may set this report apart is this researcher's measuring technique. In particular, his method of measuring educational desparity shows, in his words, that studiousness is stigmatized among black school children, whereas for white students, higher grades dictate popularity.

He draws several conclusions on a number of topics, so if you have about ten minutes, it may be worth a read: http://www.economist.com/world/na/displaystory.cfm?stor

Jail is the end game of the failed individual, not of a racist society. No education, skill set or trade leads to jail. There is no excuse to walk away from a "free" tax payer funded educational system. The high crime rate is a direct result of how different societies prioritise education. It seem apparent the it is "cool" to be a drop-out in certian societies, where as in other societies education is heralded. The high detention rate among our black citizens is not the result of a racist society.
