Police believe that Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski (below) was shot and killed with an assault weapon on Saturday.

Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, Philadelphia Police Department

His death again raises questions about assault weapons on the streets.  Should they be legal and would reinstating laws making them illegal compromise our Second Amendment rights?

If, they were declared 'illegal', would that empower the criminal? Who would be able to acquire these weapons anyway?...IF... they were declared "illegal"?

Could it be, that that we (the law abiding citizen) would be at a disadvantage?

Should we not focus on illegal guns possession ? Instead of blanket law's that include law abiding citizens right to defend themselves?

The black market gun business will thrive, unless, a concentrated effort is made to crush it...Should we focus efforts there?

If, we eliminate (or make an Effort to) illegal gun possession, where would that leave us?

Why were these men alive, nevertheless running around on our city streets? They all had extensive criminal histories longer then my arm. One of them had 16 prior arrests and had been incarcerated 7 times!! If this justice system could be fixed, these animals should never have seen the light of day. It's not the guns that are the problem! It's the people. Lay a gun on a table it will not kill anyone; but put it in the hands of these lowlives that should be in a dark hole somewhere anyway, and that's where the issue lays.

Could another solution be in high crime areas have police officers travel in pairs?

I think banning assault weapons will just enable the criminals more.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but if we legalized all drugs, the drug supply would increase at first. Then, the price would fall due to availability. Eventually, unless the government subsidies recreational drugs, the distribution would dry up because there is no money in drugs. This would effectively "cut" the supply chain. Lets face facts, most people don't do drugs. Why? Because they want to be in control of their lives. The whole reasons people kill for drugs is the money that can be made by keeping drugs illegal. Once done, the money being spent on drug enforcement could be spent on rehabilitation. Onto government sponsored social services (food stamps, welfare). If you apply for social programs and test positive for drug use, you will be denied assistance until you're clean. Once the drugs are gone, the guns to used to enforce turf will be gone as well, and the legal gun owners can have their weapons without fear of our Constitutional Rights being trampled.

One thing that would curtail guns used to kill police officers is to actually bring back capital punishment for committing a crime with a gun.

I am tired of the Mumia circus, everyone knows he murdered Officer Faulkner.

Let's start with Mumia, next John Lewis, and then Levon T. Warner, and then when Eric DeShann Floyd is caught.

Let them roll up their sleeves, and start the lethal injections.

Lethal injection is far too kind, and offers no detterent. Capital punishment is meant to have teeth, not this P/C friendly "dentist office" feel good way to die. If we're serious about using the "death penalty" as a mean to stem crime, then the method used should be so severe that it actually makes people stop and think "Do I really want to die in this manner"?
I'm thinking immolation(death by fire) is a good option.

movealready, I do agree.

What I would really like is for the family and friends of the slain officer to be given the choice of how to carry out the death penalty

Maybe..."a pair of plyers and a blowtorch"?

My hope is that the death of this valiant Officer brings about a new burden of responsibility. If I want to own a hand gun or assult weapon in Philadelphia many legal and societal roadblocks should be put in front of me. With over 500 deaths yearly and the risk to our only protectors the Philadelphia Police, why is the ability to own and use a weapon so easy? The NRA and hunters should not be against the restrictions on hand guns and assault weapons in Philadelphia. If you want to own or use hand guns or assault weapons you should have a much higher responsibility level.

Legal gun owners do hold themselves to a higher standard when it comes to gun safety and security.

I think we need to define assault weapon. Is it a fully automatic,semi-auto,or just the appearance of a military weapon? In some opinions you can put a certain stock on a hand gun and that makes it an assault weapon.

It does not matter the type of gun.....If somebody has murderous intention, they will use a bazooka, a pistol, a sling shot. It is not the type of weapon that kills, it's the person operating the weapon.

Those that murder the police in the line of duty are nothing but the lowest of low mad dog animals.
They should receive no mercy

When they find Eric Floyd, (and they will) they should put this mad dog down execution style, there is no down side to it

And any other convict that is incarcerated with Mumia, John Lewis or Levon Warner (all cop killers) that takes them out in jail should be given some extra perks.

Now why would a stupid question like this be asked? We all know that assult weapons should be banned- Let's get back to actions speak louder than words- That cop would be alive if there was gun control! These weapons are only meant for war- These punks must think they are in a war-
