Hi Everyone,

I could use your help.  I am an avid cyclist.  For the past five years, I've been a member of Team in Training, the world's largest endurance training program.  It is affiliated with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Over the last five years, I've completed four, 100 mile rides around Lake Tahoe, a 200 mile ride from Seattle to Portland, and a 300 mile ride from Cleveland to Cincinnati.  All of these rides were fundraisers in the fight against cancer, with a lot of the money going to cancer research.

This year I would like to do another ride, but I must get moving on my training.  Since moving here, my bike has been gathering dust in the house, just waiting for our next ride.

That's where you come in--I know there are plenty of bike trails and hot spots for cyclists in the Philadelphia area.  I've heard it's one of the best, but I need some direction on finding them.  Can you please let me know where the best spots are for a long ride?  I appreciate all the help and would love to hear from cycling clubs and shops as well.

Thanks for all your help--see you on the road!

Hey John. I love bike riding, but am not an avid cyclist like you describe. I'm 16 years old, and I wake up at 5 A.M. to watch you and Sheinelle on Good Day, and then at 6 A.M. I'm out the door to take a 45 minute bike ride before school. I just enjoy riding around my small town of Stratford, NJ. One day, I would like to take a long bike ride, particularly in the Spring when the weather is perfect, so I would also like to know where so good bike trails are in this area. I'll check back often to see the comments some of the bloggers leave.

Hi John, there are a lot of great trails in the areaL you have the perkiomen trail through most of Montgomery County, which is really nice, and the Schuylkill trail which goes along the river. Another nice trail is along the Delaware River, on the NJ side, great place to ride miles of trails--I use this to practice for the American Cancer Society Bike a thon (in July--hint, hint) and can do a 60 mile round trip.

You may have to drive a bit to get to these trails, but they are worth it.

During the summer on the weekends they can get somewhat crowded, but if you can go early in the morning or during a weekday, you should have these trails mostly to yourself.

Good luck, and have fun.

One more thing, if you are looking for a good bike shop, Tailwind in Schwenksville is right on the Perkiomen Trail, and it is a great place for service and for finding a good bike at a good price--bought three of them there so far.

Oh and did I mention the American Cancer Society Bike a thon?? (LOL) this shop has been a strong support of the ride in past years!

Are you guys part of the cycling group that takes up all lanes of the road, refusing to help cars pass and hold up everybody by going 5mph up hill in your speedos with mirrors on your helmets. Not one of you is in shape enough to wear those suits. Besides, I have kids, nobody want so see the outline of you genitalia. Get off the public raods, let cars pass and wear decent clothes. It's amazing to me that people don't intentionally run you off the road( I don't mean that). Someone should steal all of your bike seats :>)

Movealready, if you would read the postings, you would see we are talking about bike trails, as in off road!!

And personally I do not like wearing the bike pants either, but riding 40-50 miles on a hot summer day with just plain shorts--that causes major rash!

I saw the trail statement, I was just checking, and kidding. You guys are great, It's the road cyclist that are maddening. They all think their Olympic cyclists and jam up traffic in the persuit of their sport, and usually, there quite dangerous. In fact, I love to mountian bike. I had a chance to mountian bike at Palmer Park in Colorado Springs, truly world class biking, lots of fun. If you get the chance, you've got to ride Colorado~!!!

I am not thrilled with the Lance Armstrong wannabees who take up the road either and will not get out of the way...when I do ride on the road, I usually go early in the AM and will get onto the grass if I need too, I do not want a car on my back tire!

But even on the trail, when it is paved, like down by Valley Forge, the little Lance's like to take up the whole trail on their racing bikes, and run other riders and joggers off the trail--this is not cool! They spend all that money on their bikes, and on their gear, to ride a total of 5 miles a week and they cannot take the time to learn common courtesy on or off the trail!!

Lehigh Valley has awesome trails- You can also google "Pennsylvania Parks"- It will provide you a number of regions with more than bike trails :D

And there is a great bicycle shop on Street Road in Feasterville, called Guy's Bikes- Next to McDonalds- That's been there since I can remember, back in 1973- Family owned of course :D

hey John, I usually ride 30+ miles a day. Last year I hit 10,000 miles. I live in Central Bucks County so most days I go 11 miles to the Delaware River and ride along there for many miles. If you have a hybrid or off road bike, the D&R Canal trail on the NJ side from Frenchtown to Trenton can give you 60 miles all flat. I try and go to the Schuyikill River Trail starting in Oaks 1x a week you could go all the way past the Art Museum down to the waterworks, thats about 44 miles roundtrip, you ride along kelly drive for 7 miles. It also connects to the Perkiomen Trail which goes up to Green Lane PA (unpaved) 18 miles one-way. Last year I made a 76 mile ride between the 2 trails.
If u want some further info, feel free to email me at tharvey2299@aol.com
Last year my father (age 64) and I rode from Pittsburgh to Wash DC on the C&O Canal Trail and Alleghany Passage in 6 days, 370 miles
