Aside form my struggling loropetalum, I have SO much to be thankful for.
I woke up this morning to near-freezing temperatures (again). In the face of global warming we have already had five mornings below freezing here in northern Florida - the first before Halloween. It has warmed to nearly seventy degrees and I am working outside in short sleeves. The maples are in full autumn glory - oranges and reds. So I am most thankful for my (heavily-mortgaged) home and property.
And this Monday, I start a new - old - job. I am going back to work (for the third time) for my former employer in Pinellas County. Indeed, I will be going back to being away from home three nights a week, but at least I am gainfully employed in a job that I enjoy.
My wife and I enjoy good health and happiness and f or those things, we are eternally grateful.
Life is VERY good!
Happy Thanksgiving one and all!

Hopefully, this is not a violation of Fox's T&C so here goes...
Are there any of you out there that are experts in gardening/landscaping? Here's my dilemma. The wife and I had a deck built about a year ago. Last spring, we planted twenty-two small loropetalum (loropetala?) as a border around said deck. We purchased them from a local nursery here in Alachua County. Out of 22 plants, six of them flat-out died which the grower replaced for us. Still more ended up dying - some of which were original plants and at least a couple were the replacements. So we gave up on this guy and bought six more from another grower.
I'm still having a heck of a time with them. Only about six of them are doing really well. The rest are stunted and/or have edges of their leaves turning brown.
I know that these plants like acidic soil so I have been feeding them coffee grounds. Of course, we haven't had rain in weeks so I water them at least twice a week. I also fertilized them with Osmocote which I use on everything.
What is up? It's not like we are master gardeners but almost everything else that we have planted over the years has thrived including Indian hawthorn and vibernum not to mention lots of live oaks and maples. We provide everything with lots of TLC.
If anyone can offer some suggestions, I would sure appreciate it. I'm about ready to rip them all out and replace them with Indian hawthorn.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Hi friends (you, too, YD),
I spoke with our beloved Madame President today and she asked me to convey her best wishes to her blogging buddies. I had lunch with her the week before last and she seemed to be in very good spirits.
She is living in beautiful downtown Micanopy while she is undergoing her treatments at Shands Hospital at UF in Gainesville.
I talked to her on the phone today and she has completed the first of her treatments. Talk about a trooper.
Again, she wanted me to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Michelle is an inspiration to us all.

While pumping gas yesterday (for $1.799), I noticed a POP display for cigarettes. At the bottom of the display was the usual Surgeon General's warning which states that, "Cigarette smoking by pregnant women can result in low birth weight,..." etc., etc.
How freaking STUPID is this, I asked myself?
Why not, "WARNING - Cigarettes will ****ING KILL YOU!" ???

Boo hoo. The "fat cats" have all of the money. They're rich and I'm not. It isn't fair, is it? Why should THEY have more money than they need? Why shouldn't I be entitled to some (or all) of it?
They have their corporate jets, their big houses, and their mega-yachts. I drive around in my ten-year-old pickup and I can barely afford my house payments.
WAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!
I've got it...let's elect a socialist as president so that he can take the money from those rich people and give it to US!
Brilliant!

Thanks to global warming, I have depleted approximately ten percent of my firewood stash and it isn't even Thanksgiving yet, for Pete's sake.
Some of this wood I've had since the end of the 2004 hurricane season. Al, you're killing me. Friends, get out there and let your cars idle, PLEASE. Gas is cheap now and it will help warm things up. Throw away (I mean, recycle) those CFL light bulbs. Get your incandescents out again.
The temperature went below freezing at 11pm at Gainesville Regional and it was 29 at 5am.
And how about those poor people in Cleveland? I guess they won't be growing citrus in Ohio anytime soon, will they?

Perhaps there IS a glimmer of hope at the end of the long, dark tunnel for the true conservatives. With any kind of luck - and some very hard work - we may actually be able to bring the Republican Party back from the precipice at which time I will proudly change my voter registration back to "R" from "NPA".
Sean Hannity interviewed Newt Gingrich yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon on his radio show. When asked by Sean, Speaker Gingrich did not DENY the fact that he may consider running for president in 2012.
Hannity and Gingrich also discussed the fact that Michael Steele (former governor of Maryland and chairman of GOPAC) may be in the running for chairman of the GOP.
There may be hope yet for our Republican Party. God forbid - Republicans actually behaving like conservatives. We shall keep our fingers crossed.

President-elect Obama is calling for another stimulus package to help to jump-start the economy.
Does he NOT see that our brethren at OPEC and the "evil" oil companies have already given us a stimulus in the form of gasoline prices being one-half what they were four months ago?
Mark FloydFreak's words...
The fall of oil prices will do more to resurrect the economy than ANYTHING that the government can or will do - and it WILL. And Lord Obama will ride off into the sunset taking ONE HUNDRED PERCENT OF THE CREDIT.

So, those of you left-wingers that envy the wealth of the rich and successful...
...I want to offer you a thought:
If you want the rich man's money so badly, why don't you EARN it? Go to WORK for the rich man; prove your worth. THAT's the best way to get his money.
Why do you think that having the government take the rich man's money and give it to you is the preferable way to go?

...not God bless America. God DAMN America."
You Osama supporters just remember those words when you pull the lever for his highness.
Personally, the mere THOUGHT of those words makes me retch.

I defined the word "demagogue" for you a few days ago. Here's another one for you.
Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger used the word "CHARLATAN" to describe his most merciful, the almighty, lord Obama this evening on the Huckabee show.
"CHARLATAN" is described as follows by Merriam-Webster:
1
: quack 2
2
: one making usually showy pretenses to knowledge or ability
: fraud
,
faker
I believe that Secretary Eagleburger was being overly flattering toward Osama, but he received a hearty applause from the studio audience.
You're up, Scooby...

Check this out, friends. Now our tax dollars are being used to BUS VOTERS TO THE POLLS!
Alachua County, being the liberal haven that it is, has used county school buses to bus students to the polls so that they could vote.
Isn't THAT special?
"That point of view is apparently shared by a large number of Eastside seniors. Thursday, 23 of them boarded a school bus and rode across town to the Millhopper Branch Library to vote for the first time."
