I received a flier in the mail from our good friends at Pepco; one subject line:

PEPCO OFFERS MORE WAYS TO SAVE

The article goes on:  'We're discounting the price of select Energy Star CFLs for our Maryland customers.  You'll save $1.50 on each single bulb and $3 on multipacks when you shop....'

Then they lower the boom in the next paragraph:  'Maryland customers should note that a minimal surcharge will be added to electric bills starting in January to pay for the cost of this program.'

Are you kidding me?  When they say 'We' in the first paragraph, they must be meaning me and you Pepco customers in Maryland.  So I guess if you don't like the price of the CFLs, you need to get over it because it looks like 'We' will be paying for it.

Merry Christmas from your friends at Pepco!!!

Fish:

Is this any worse than having to pay PEPCO to be a customer, as I constantly look at my bill monthly and see the customer surcharge of $5+change. When spoke with someone in customer service to explain this to me, the response was PEPCO charges everyone for this and there is nothing I or anyone else can do. How is that for a Christmas present, PEPCO charging customer to be a customer, do we as customer's have a choice, I know I do not as BGE does not service my side of the street, this is too funny, thanks a lot PEPCO!

Interesting Bits. Your note made me pull out my bill and look. Damn. My customer charge is $6.65. Isn't the only worse looking bill a telephone bill? It goes on and on with a dime for this and a nickel for that. I see even Pepco has picked up on the 'telephone bill looking charges' such as Univeral Service Charge.
Hail Pepco!!

refer to the blog above this one and here we have an interesting case perhaps of political correctness mindset spinning a negative to appear positive looking ...to think some idiot is proud of puttin’ this together …the nominal surcharge is recover the money PEPCO p=issed away on printin’ up this insert!!!

Wow, Fish, you are paying more to be a customer than I am, does that mean it depends on where you live as I have always been told, your zip code matters. I think we as the customers should start a protest and eliminate this amount from our bills each month to teach PEPCO that they cannot continue to use us in this manner as we have no choice in being customers!

I've thought about that. Wouldn't it be nice if our news friends at Fox5 would take the lead on this and do some exploration where the common customer can go only so far. As you said, you asked the question what the charge was for and you were told that's the way it is. He Fox5, are you out there and don't you think this might be worthy of getting some answers??

Let us hope and pray that FOX5 Investigates gets involved as they too pay for the customer charge as well!
