FIGMAN's Blog

On Thanksgiving Day my 23 year old college student son made a confession while he was home for the day. Somehow the topic of Bingo came up and he made a confession about what he and five of his friends did this past Tuesday night. They played Bingo.....! Yes bingo and they have been playing for the past several months...! That's right.....playing bingo with the folks down at the VFW Hall in Springfield, Mo. My son said it was a lot of fun and the older folks there think it is really great that a group of guys in their early 20's come to play bingo and socialize with them. He also confessed bingo was no walk in the park. He said, "those people are serious and the competition is intense." He claimed the people who always win have some kind of computer gadget. He also made mention they make good food and it didn't cost much to eat a very good meal while there.

The rest of the story is how he took time late Thanksgiving Day to show the teens at the family Thanksgiving gathering how to play the game. What a site to see watching my 23 year old son as a Bingo caller. There the kids sat in a circle on the floor for a couple hours with bingo cards doing their best to keep up. The ages ranged from about 12 to early 20's including our foreign exchange student. I just can't explain what a neat site it was and how good it made me feel to hear my son say these words, "that's a good bingo."

I guess all is not lost in our world with young people. You hear all about how youth are not responsible and how they don't respect their elders. I suppose what you wouldn't see on the news or hear in conversation is how a group of twenty-something young men play bingo every Tuesday night with the likes of WW2 veterans and widows. It sure did warm my heart and give me a sense of gratification knowing my son was apart of something so simple and good. That is one thing this Thanksgiving holiday I am very thankful for.

I used to go play Bingo with my wife a lot years ago....... When I was a kid I won a pup tent playing binge and camped out in our yard with it...........

he most amazing thing I ever saw though was this lady that was playing in Muskegon Michigan at a hall we went to when I was up there for a month of school....... She had an entire table full of cards..... Had to be 50 plus and never marked one card....... She would just walk back and forth looking at her cards and once in a while she would yell out bingo and point out the numbers that she won on........

Heck I have a problem keeping up with more than 2 cards........

OH I loved this post as I can really relate to what you are saying...We too have a son who lives in Springfield and goes to school. Bingo? Who would have thought? There is nothing that warms our hearts more than knowing that those little boys we raised can grow up and be considerate caring men...Hooray for your son...hooray for your thankful heart...hooray for Bingo.

A college kid playing bingo is much better than one playing drinking games.

It sounds like you have a great kid.

How very cool, Figman. All is not lost with America's youth!

My girls did something pretty awesome on Thanksgiving as well: They got up at 3am with me and went to a church in Soulard to prepare food for homeless. Now JJ and Joey want to go on Christmas morning and do the same thing!

Good clean socializing fun, and good food to boot.

May they always be so smart in choosing how to spend their socializing time.

I am glad you son didn't win a lot or he may not have made it home alive. Just kidding but I called bingo for 15 years at our parish. During the school picnic bingo a bunch of kids came in and started winning. The regulars started screaming card them (even though they had beers so I am pretty sure they were 18), they are cheating, and my favorite, you need to limit the amount one group can win. They can be a scary lot when riled. One of the people that worked with me brought in an article about a parish bingo where a woman won around 7 or more in a row. A nun ended up in the hospital and a priest with a broken nose after the riot broke out.

I miss calling bingo, it really is a lot of fun. My two oldest have wanted to try calling and I have talked them out of it. I think it is my overprotective nature. They do like to play when they are home.

I can't keep up with more than one card. I have been to a professional Bingo (If that is what ya call it)twice in my life.
Once was at a VFW,I went with a friend and oh boy all the regular's had these bell's they would ring when a number that had not been called before. OMG! I vowed then never again,But a friend of our's that live in Cahokia talked us into going to a Catholic Church in Belleville for a benefit or something. Needless to say that is not my thing. But we do play here with the kid's and grandkid's.Lot's quieter and not as nerve racking.

Glad to see your exchange student enjoying family fun. These are memories they never forget.

Great thing you and your girls did, wacky!

I think Ana (our exchange student) likes our busy lifestyle but she is always eager to be home and rest. She is on our girls basketball team with my daughter and tonight is their first game. I am pretty sure she won't get to play much but I am proud she is hanging on just to be on the team.
