Why do they call it that...?

While in England a few years ago I learned the origin of some words we use. I have no idea if this is true but it makes sense....Here is a sampling;
 
Threshold - This of course is the item placed on the floor opening of doorways leading to the outside. In today's world it is used mostly for a weather break and to keep what is outside from being inside.
 
The original use was different. In the early days in England people of wealth had slate floors. The floors would get damp with temperature changes. In order to zap the moisture up and keep from slipping the owners of the home would put thresh on the floor. As they walked around the house and outside the thresh would move around. Therefore a board was placed at the door going outside to hold the thresh......we still call them today a Threshold.

The term Dead Ringer came from England as well. In the early days it was discovered they buried people alive. They knew this because when they moved some graveyards some of the coffins came open as they were made of wood. They also found scratch marks on the inside of the coffin. So after that they decided to tie a string to the finger of the person buried and run it up to the top of the ground and put a bell on it. If someone heard it ring...you guessed it they had a "Dead Ringer"

The term graveyard shift came about for the same reason. Most graveyards in that day were in the city so people around the city would hear the Dead Ringer...since most people slept at night they built little huts in the corner of each graveyard and paid people to watch the area and listen for the dead ringer...it became know as the "Graveyard shift".

Oh, Faith dropped her phone in the toilet yesterday...so keep your eyes peeled for another one for her. She likes the Razor...and she will pay for the next one with her OWN $$!

Michelle...did you try taking faith's phone apart and letting the parts all dry out then put it back together? I know of a cell phone dropped in our lake at the ozarks that worked again after doing that....

Yes she did and it worked and I have done that to mine as well but you have to do it quickly to make it effective...!
