People continue to be focused on Iraq. Is the surge working is it not? With two new reports out one saying that the surge is providing the permanent change necessary to stabilize Iraq the other saying it has not the debate continues over the surge even as it is beginning to rap up. Either way it looks like we will remain in Iraq for a long time. But can we ignore Afghanistan? The moderate stabilization of Iraq has come at the cost of Afghanistan where our troops do not have the manpower to beat the Taliban and secure the country. The recent prison breakout was just part of a larger destabilization and with more U.S. troops dying in Afghanistan than Iraq for the first time we face a real problem. The Taliban is trying to prevent our aid and foment the growth of poppies leading to an increase in Heroine production. Our troops cannot win with the numbers they have, the populace needs a surge similar to Iraq to hope to accomplish anything. We need to get basic utilities up and running so the Afghans will support us. Without additional troops that seems out of the question. But where to fet the troops? If we pull troops out of Iraq whatever stability the surge has created will likely collapse and our army is just not big enough to control both countries. We could increase the size of our army, but that would take time, and alot of taxpayers dollars that we can ill afford right now. Other NATO countries probably could contribute more troops but we need to take the lead. I am not sure what a solution is to this problem but something has to be done. We cannot allow the Taliban to return to power in Afghanistan for it would spell disaster for the U.S. in the drug trade as well as the terrorism which the Taliban supports.

Demboy, who do you think your fooling with this Afghan War BS. You libbies have been screaming about ending that one too.
Or are you suggesting that we be the "watchdog" for the world? I thought the war in Afghanistan was the "just" war, you know, the one that the UN and all civilized nations agreed needed to be fought? Excuse me, but let the rest of the world take care of Afghanistan. Bring all our soldiers home from Afghanistan and let the rest of the world finish it. Unless of course, as they've shown repeatedly, they can't. But that's for a different day...

Other NATO countries probably could contribute more troops but we need to take the lead.

'But can we ignore Afghanistan?'

What? Who the hell's 'ignoring' Afghanistan? Was Laura Bush not recently visiting them? Did she not promise 'We will not forget you Afghanistan.'????? Why is my husband about to begin training for deployment to Afghanistan? So exactly WHO's forgotten? Because it sure as hell hasn't been any of us that give a BLEEP.

I'm about to say something really mean Demoboy, but I feel the need to say it. Maybe its tough love.
I like you, I really do, and I know you don't need anyone's advise, but, maybe you should enlist and actually serve your country before typing nonsense and BS like a.....oh never mind, I can't do it. But seriously Demoboy, you really need to stop and think about this.

dasvics,
Demboy's young and naive. He doesn't understand the logistics of the Afghan terrain or the geopolitical struggles that are going on in the tribal lands and Northwestern Pakistan. For months now the Taliban has been attacking villages in the SWAT area of Pakistan demanding that their form of Islam be the only form practiced or death will occur. They attack at night in groups of 300-400 trying to inflict terror onto good honest moderate Muslims. It's the part of the global jihad we don't hear much about in the MSM. That is, radical Muslims killing Moderate Muslims. The MSM still wants to contend that the jihadists just hate America. The sad truth is that these evil-doers hate everybody. There is no dialog to be had with these people. Their demands are simple, conform, or die. Wouldn't it be comforting if Barack Obama had some type of clue as to the demands of the enemies of all civilized people world-wide? To these enemies, rhetoric is weakness. And the weak shall die.

In the April 2008 report given at the Bucharest Summit, by NATO the Assistant Secretary General fro Public Diplomacy Jean-Francois Bureau summarized "this broad International effort to help Afghanistan build a more stable and secure future is achievable, and it is being achieved. Of course, real challenges remain, and this will be a long-term effort; but the information contained in this report gives reason for optimism".
As far as the opium problem... this same report says, "Although the overall picture remains of real concern, there are some signs of progress. In the North, the number of opium-free provinces has doubled, from six in 2006 to 13 in 2007. Opium poppy cultivation there has decreased by 72% last year and eradication totalled 2,871 ha. In the West, cultivation in Ghowr province recorded the biggest decrease (68%) in Afghanistan in 2007. The Afghan Government's Good Performers' Initiative, which is in its first year, and the Counter-narcotics Trust Fund already prove to be effective incentives". It also said "This shows that counter-narcotics efforts can succeed".
In other words, your trying to distort the real progress being done in Afghanistan with inaccurate information considering that the information I posted is from a 2 month old NATO report on progress in Afghanistan.

Laura Bush visiting them is not more boots on the ground. When I say ignore I mean not providing the necessary troops to fight the war in Afghanistan. I doubt the rest of the world will finish it because no matter how "just" the war is the U.S. is extremely unpopular in the world due to Bush and Iraq. Also a 2 month old report does not say much about the present situation the most recent jailbreak and the continued establishment of Taliban authority in the Helmad region stopping the creation of dams and basic utilities like electricity would seem to contradict it.

We need more troops? Well then why aren't you in boot camp? Even Prince William and Henry aren't too delicate or prissy to fight for their country, for what's right. I don't believe ANY man to be a REAL man, unless he's served his country. I have three boys, and I hope all three have the valor to do what's right.

Our War on Terror IS A JUST WAR. A NECESSARY WAR. A war we WILL WIN. God help us all if we don't.

What the Anti-American, Anti-troop, Anti-military, Anti-freedom, etc..., like DemBoy and Jay Kumar are out doing right now is attempting to undermine our troops by insinuating how much America and it's troops are HATED by the world. They're trying to find some bad news, anywhere they can to badmouth our soldiers. Lord knows, there's not much bad news coming out of Iraq. Maybe a Taliban victory is just what these Leftist/Stalinists are hoping for?

We fought the Second World War on extended frontlines in the Pacific, Europe, and Africa simultaneously. We have the ability to fight the War on Terror in many different lands, if the leftwingnuts would not continually tie our hands. I agree with Dasvics. Demboy, it's time to do your part and go see your local Marine Corps Recruiter, rather than whining and complaining. Do something useful, for a change.

I figured you would post something idiotic like that. Forget that the 2 month old report is based on information gathered over an entire year, right! Lets instead take your expert word based on some recent events that have transpired over say a two 2-3 week period and say that it is the model for the next decade.
You will learn soon enough from your philosophy professor that what you just did is make a non-valid point into a slippery slope. You can't come to the conclusion that the progress has done an about face because there was a prison break in Afghanistan, And please don't say but what about the opium business? A 72% and 68% decrease in the nations provinces refutes your claim to that. There is no way for you to validate your assumption with the limited amount of data you talk about but don't cite, compared to the researched and confirmed data in the NATO report. You might as well say that based on the spike of the temperature outside today our world is going to burn up soon unless it cools down tomorrow. Quit trying to sound intelligent and just be the 18 year old kid that you are.

I just listened to a rant from a CODE PINKER and it's the same exact talking points that we've heard from Jay, DemBoy, and Nicole. Exactly the same talking points!!! They're way out on the fringe...

I am actually going by the WEEK OLD Time article about Afghanistan. Did you read it? According to it every single U.S. ground commander says they don't have enough troops to finish the job. So id did some more research into the current state of Afghanistan. That is why I wrote this blog. The prison break is merely one example of a problematic situation. I am not complaining merely calling attention to a problem we seem to be having. As Americans we should all be worried about our soldiers not having the resources to accomplish their mission.
DF Saying that we are on the fringe doesn't really mean anything. I could say your a wacko but I don't because it is pointless.

I can see how I am so wrong about your information. Oh, wait, your writing about the article that quotes a Major Mike Shervington who is the commander of 200 British troops in the hills above village in Kajaki Olya, right? Once again here is an example of a leftist who distorts information to make it conform to their version of progress.
You can't seriously compare the comments of one commander of 200 troops looking over one village to the consensus of reporting commanders and NATO observers who agree that Coalition Forces are on the right track, can you? You definitely need some experience in the research area because if I were one of your professors I would be so pissed at you for wasting my time with this garbage. It really shows that you are a freshman.

I am a Freshman at UW Madison. I believe in real solutions to real problems. I didn't see the Republicans offering any of them so I a gave the Democrats a chance to do something. I believe both parties are too polarized now to get things done so I think moderates are needed. I am a moderate liberal. I spent months deciding who to support in the presidential election but I finally have decided to vote for Senator Barrack Obama. I love studying world problems, playing tennis, playing video games and now blogging.
