Why are we so concerned about whether or not executions are "painful" to those who are receiving them? Why should we CARE if they cry out, "Ahhh, THAT hurts, Charlie!" ? After all, those receiving the Death Penalty have obviously committed an extremely pernicious, unusually violent, often desecrating act against another innocent human being(s).  Often, they show little or NO remorse for what they have done, or try to JUSTIFY it, by claiming they were "warped by their childhood."  I  KNOW Click here to find out more! what the Constitution says about it. What I want to know, is why there are so many people who care so much about "how it feels to the inmate" receiving their final punishment. I just don't get it. Don't they consider the way the victim's of the crimes suffered? The ways they were likely tortured, raped and then killed, sometimes even being forced to watch those they love going through the same thing before THEY were killed?  I strongly believe our "Death Penalty" is too kind!    I believe if the Death Penalty was a horrifying,  excruciatingly painful experience, and done in such a way that it could be viewed publicly, for those who wished to watch, the crimes of violence against innocent victims would drop dramatically. I have absolutely ZERO sympathy for ANYONE who suffers another human being into death for their own gratification, WHATEVER that may be. I wouldn't be opposed to public firing squads, old-fashioned quarterings, ( although that would make a helluva bio-hazard mess) or hangings! U.S. Constitution: Eighth Amendment

''Cruel and Unusual Punishments'' .''Difficulty would attend the effort to define with exactness the extent of the constitutional provision which provides that cruel and unusual punishments shall not be inflicted; but it is safe to affirm that punishments of torture [such as drawing and quartering, embowelling alive, beheading, public dissecting, and burning alive], and all others in the same line of unnecessary cruelty, are forbidden by that amendment to the Constitution.''

except for the mess, I think beheading is quick and painless.

The execution should mirror the crime. If the scumbag used a gun : a firing squad (lead by the victims family), if he used a knife : cut him to little bitty pieces, if he beat the victim to death : use a baseball bat.

The key is to offer the job to the victims family first and televise it for all the other scumbags to see.

My thinking is right along those lines, Yellowdog!

Whenever I encounter someone who is against the death penalty here's what I ask them. If someone was coming at a member of your family with a knife and was going to kill them would you be willing to shoot that person to death to protect your family? I haven't met anyone yet who would say "no." Well, that is exactly what society is doing when they execute a person who has committed a crime that has been deemed to be so horrendous that that person should die in order to make sure they can never do that act again. Life in prison is not the answer because that doesn't protect the other inmates or guards from that person. With that said, we should make the execution as painless as possible. But there is no totally humane way to kill someone. There is always going to be a little discomfort for a few seconds, even if it's only mental. SO WHAT!! Hangmen used to pride themselves in their ability to hang a man without ripping the guy's head off. But bleeding heart liberals get sqeamish if inserting the needle into his arm hurts a little. I've got it. Let's ask these bleeding hearts if they'd be willing to let the guy live with them. I'd bet they'd say NO!!

Actually there are countries that use horrifying methods of execution and torture and it never affected the murder rates in them at all.

As for why the death penalty should be done in a humane manner with as little pain as possible, its because we are not animals like those who have committed the crimes warranting the death penalty. We have a moral compass and we should know that being inhumane and cruel is wrong no matter who it is we are inflicting the pain on. Remember the old adage, two wrongs don't make a right. As for your interpretation of the 8th amendment, it does cover a painful execution for the same reason as above. Furthermore it is not the governments job to put fear into the heart of it's people to keep it from doing wrong. It's the job of the government to make sure it's people never have to live in fear for any reason.

Death penalty yes, painful executions no.

"Death penalty yes, painful executions no."

I like this better:

Death Penalty YES - Painful Executions ALWAYS

Execution is mostly to exact a bit of revenge for an aggrieved populace.

If it does intend have an effect to deter future criminals it should be televised and be barbaric.

The death penalty must also be delivered quickly so the society doesn't waste money on feeding the scumbag for years.

hang 'em high.... heck, I wish they still did public floggings.. cut thieves hands off.. cut rapists peckers off.. tattoo 'DEADBEAT' on deadbeat dad's fore heads.. For children born out of wed lock, the first occurrence should be forgiven but after the second they should sterilize the mother... that'll relieve a welfare burden. Same for abortion... They want an abortion fine... then sterilize em. crucifixion would be fitting for pedophile priests. And if convicted of knowingly decieving the American people by a 2/3 majority, politicians should have their lips cut off....try putting lipstick on it then..

Well, Hey jfore! Haven't seen you around here for awhile! Glad you could make it, Hon! That's what I'm saying, exactly! My gosh, a little needle stick, a little zap of electricity, and they're crying like a 2 year old who just busted his lip open? Heck, I think they SHOULD have BOTH of their lips busted open, on the way to "The Chamber"
Pattie, Dang Straight!
Sage, Please tell me which countries you're referring to, and where those statistics come from! That's an outrageous statement to make. You KNOW what they do to people in the Middle East for something as petty (in comparison to raping, mutilating and killing someone) as drug possession. How often do "big drug busts" happen there, like they do here, that make national news? NEVER! Hmmm, I wonder why!
Frank, I wish their pain was equal to or greater than the pain they caused their victims. The victim's they harmed aren't the ONLY victims, the survivor's are victims, too.
For the REST of their LIVES!
Yellowdog, my point, exactly! Some scumbags MIGHT just think twice, before they snatch some little girl, throw a woman into the back of their car, or kill an elderly couple for their car.
truth, YOU really need to become a politician.
We NEED people like you in Congress, on the Supreme Court, would you settle for a "Victims' Advocate"?

The victims didnt get a choice in their deaths so why should the criminal?
Bring back the electric chair and hangings. Make them public for all to see what happens when you are a murderer.
I'm not a big fan of muslims but you have to admire what they do to thieves, rapists and murderers.

Hey! That wasn't me Deb! DocDaddy said that!

But I most certainly agree! Public, painful, horrible executions would be a real deterrant!

Sage, I would also like to know where you got that information from.

The countrys that use swift and horrifying execution methods have the lowest crime rates in the world!

Impale his sorry ass, publicly. Takes about 3 to 9 days to die, I am thinking pay per view 30 percent of proceeds going to pay for her hospital bills. I volunteer to supervise said impalement. I guarantee excruciating pain.

1 4" fence post and a butane torch for any pesky bleeding .

I'm against the death penalty per se because our system of "justice" is so heavily flawed and corrupt that too many innocent people are on death row right now.

That said, in cases where there is no doubt at all: an overwhelming amount of irrefutable evidence -- DNA, witnesses, etc. etc., I'll go with the "eye for an eye" method. Let the method of execution be the same as the method of the murder. And if the victim was a child, draw it out a bit longer.

My civilized side is thinking: "this is a barbaric proposal". But my emotional side thinks: "if someone viciously and unjustifiably takes the life of another, he/she immediately surrenders his/her rights to be treated as a human -- no civil rights, and no right to a humane death.

UncleRob, name just one innocent person who is on death row. If you look back at the cases where people on death-row have had their sentences reduced to life in prison or have even been released it had always been due to a technicality. None has ever been found to be totally innocent. After all, there was enough evidence to convince a jury that they were guilty. So there is still the question about the very few that have been declared "legally" innocent as to whether they actually are "in fact" innocent.

I love MOST people, especially children and old people, and I am especially offended when someone hurts one of them. "NEVER WRESTEL WITH PIGS, THE PIGS LIKE IT, AND YOU'LL JUST GET DIRTY!" Modified from a quote by my dear friend, jfore
