Profiling Works, So Why The Fuss?

The FBI, CIA, Secret Service, Homeland Security and ALL Law Enforcement Agencies KNOW that PROFILING Criminals WORKS, so why is there a big fuss going on about it, NOW? Just because we're in an election year, the "Race Card" is coming out of the deck and once again being slapped on the table. Those who have dedicated their lives to protecting American citizens, have been told they must "find, and determine who is and who isn't a criminal," by means other than their nationality, ethnicity or look.

 I, for one would probably choose to exit a plane immediately, if several men of Middle Eastern Descent suddenly boarded together.  Would I be wrong to feel nervous?  Why shouldn't I be? If I'm walking through the parking lot outside of Walmart, and I'm suddenly approached by 3 guys with dreadlocks, droopy drawers, untied shoes, staring dead at me, I WILL reach for my pistol; and be ready, should they mistake me for a helpless victim. Is it wrong of me to think they might be criminals? Why should I think otherwise?  If I see a girl weaving out of TJMaxx, with track marks up and down her arms,  I'd deliberately choose a cart, other than the one she just dropped off. Why would I be wrong not to want to "pick up" something she may be "carrying."  All of those are examples of "Profiling," and I know I'm not the only one who does it. I can remember back when Robert Vogel was Sheriff of Volusia Co. He and his deputies got into a PILE of trouble for "Profiling" suspected drug dealers going down 95. They were specifically looking for larger model cars, with sagging "rear ends"  and 2 or more "Black or Hispanic" drivers. Man, did they stop alot of cars carrying dope. But some "hotshot" lawyer said it was "profiling," and some of the cases were thrown out. Vogel was later exonerated, as he should have been, but here we are again. 

"Profiling-Schmofiling"! If it smells like a rotten sneaker, and looks like a rotten sneaker, chances are....

MY QUESTION IS: IF PROFILING WORKS, IT'S ACCURATE!  SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?

I don't see anything wrong with it at all. If something works, and gets the desired results, why abandon it?

Things that are " out of place " or " unusual " draw attention to the trained eye, no matter what or the who, the where, the when, or the why of it. A chick in a mini skirt standing on a corner while a couple of hookers were solliciting or advertizing their wares would get picked up by the cops just the same. Licensed bussinessmen rarely if ever sell TV's and stereos from the back of a van. If it don't look right, that's probably because it isn't and that's probable cause for the law to look a little harder ! If you don't run with the dogs you don't pick up the fleas ! LOL !!!!

If people don't want to be profiled, they should fix the problem at the source: their communities/subcultures. If those people commit crimes by greatly disproportionate numbers, then of course people will know that and will of course be suspicious of them. Calling people “racists” because they’ve observed this and are naturally cautious/suspicious as a result will not change the facts (the greatly disproportionate crimes), and it will not somehow cause people to become oblivious to that fact. As long as it continues, people WILL know it and WILL seek to protect themselves from it. The solution is to work on changing the values of the subculture/communities, and no one outside of those subcultures is going to be able to influence them (they’ll just be called “racists”). They’ve got to correct it themselves – together. When the crimes stop, and people see that it’s for real, the suspicions will fade. Being defensive about it, making excuses for it, denying it, will not change the reality. And trying to defend CRIMES just highlights the core of the problem: the pernicious mindsets and values of the subculture/community. It sure doesn’t fix the problem and it only reinforces reasons for concern/suspicion by others.

There is nothing wrong with it at all it's more P.C. bull#$%&, Glad you are carrying and more people should be now that the laws have changed in our favor, If some of these rugheads that are stealing purses in the parking lots would run up against more people carrying, and a few of them get put down and it makes headlines they might find something else to do.

LOL Deb such an interesting question you pose. It is so funny to me that "profiling" is only a problem when it is used to stop, deter, interrup, abate, obstruct, pause, avast, surcease, or terminate criminals and their behavior. However you will never hear one of them complain when they are the ones "profiling" others. WHAT?? you say?? They "profile"...now BLEEP way dude!

Stop and think...how does the crimianl intent on robbing someone find his victim? He PROFILES HIM OR HER. How does the criminal intent on selling drugs find his buyer? He PROFILES HIM OR HER. How does the pimp looking for new hoes find his girls? He PROFILES them. How does the terrorist decide where to strike and who? He too PROFILES them. Carjackers Profile, Bankrobbers Profile, Rapists Profile and the list goes on.

It seems to me that the real problem here and why so many complain about this is because they KNOW it works because they have done it for years! Its kind of like the baker who finds out his super special secret recipe is being printed on the cracker box! I mean come on...how can a criminal be a criminal when everyone KNOWS and can spot him from a mile away??

Time to take your toys and go home little boys cause society has your number!

We all PROFILE, where or not you want to say you do or not. There is nothing wrong with it, in most cases you will be right going with your gut fellings. Remember THE LIFE YOU SAVE WILL BE YOUR OWN....PROFILE PROFILE

I had a feeling that MOST sensible, NON-CRIMINAL types of people would be in agreement with me. You're right, T, they copmlain, because they know it works, and then, "they be SOL, and outta bizness." Not only do we have their "number," we have their 8 X 10's in "CJIS", don't we, "BOYS"? LMLAO!!!

This may come as a complete shock to EVERYONE here who has responded and espescially to the author of this post, but I too, am in agreement with the issue of profiling, yet as in EVERYTHING in life...there are exceptions.

This may also come as a shock to you(primarily you Deb) but I am a Law-abiding, strictly Family-oriented citizen and in my times of leisure...I occasionally wear my hat slightly to the back and oversized jeans that provide more comfort FOR ME than the "ultra tight" fit of traditional jeans.(Though not sagging as you and your cohorts mistakingly deduce...I am much too aged(29)for that and shall leave that vile style to the youth of OUR generation)

Now, as a law abiding citizen...and because I CHOOSE to dress in a manner which elicits additional Police attention, I am NOT OFFENDED if and when an Officer of the Law opts to detain me(It has indeed occurred on more than one occasion thus far in my lifetime)...but what IS offensive TO ME is the "assumptive guilt" behavior of the Officer prior to AND even after determining my innocence. This is merely MY experience, but MY experience is all I can base my opinions on......thus, I sincerely hope you don't dismiss my words as the rantings of an "Angry Black Man" as it is merely MY TRUE experience...and as always...FOR ME...Laughter is good medicine.

"For those of you who may have noticed that I have been absent from this site for awhile, well I have been dealing with certain legal issues during the course of the past 30 days. I am hesitant to address the precise parameters of the "alleged" infractions, however, I feel the need to vent; hence, this is my forum.
Aligned along the sidewalks of Edgewater Drive in Orlando, extending from Forest City Road to Lee Road, are approximately 4 "TEGG for SHERIFF" signs and 1 "DEMINGS for SHERIFF" sign; said sign being posted at the intersection of Edgewater and Lee Rd. I'm pleased you can distinguish between satire...farce...comedy...facetiousness...wit, etc....and though I admit to MAJOR embellishment...WOULD YOU BELIEVE (in the voice of Don Adams...you know...Maxwell Smart of the original Get Smart series) the unjust beating (of course not as extensive) actually took place?.....

I try NOT to profile because I have been profiled before. I get picked at the airport "randomly" ALL the time! I dont know if its because I am tall or big or a man or black. but still it does get irritating. Its a good thing that I dont travel much. but for the most part I am a law abiding citizen and the cops for the most part leave me alone. LOL but seriously profiling to me is not good because you could of met a good person in the midst and you shouldnt be afraid of someone who is different. Remember the story about the Good Samaritan. but Deb IF you need someone to walk with you whenever you go to Parramore or Pine Hills give me a call. I will be there. LOL you can bring your gun. LOL We can look out for one another.

Afelton, the reason YOU get profiled , Honey, is because:
1. You're good-looking
2. You're well dressed
3. You're well behaved & well mannered
4. You speak in the manner of one who is well educated
5. You wear nice leather shoes
They want to be more like you! They only way they can come close to accomplishing this, is to get a closer look at ya! Don't take it as an insult, but rather as a compliment!
