I am a global warming skeptic.  This does not come as a surprise to anyone who knows me.  If you have had doubts, you have come to the right place.

After the 13th COLDEST February in Philadelphia and the coldest since 1979, many are scratching their heads on what to believe when it comes to global warming.

We are also off to an "extremely cold" April as well with one of the coldest Easters in recent memory.

Although, I believe, man plays a role in climate change through urbanization ("the heat island effect" & development), land use changes, and aerosols and gases, natural factors are ALSO important, most notably the sun and ocean.

My goal is NOT to convince or persuade you one way or the other---but rather, to expose you to the multiple sides of this argument. And yes, there are MULTIPLE sides.

I think the earths warming and cooling is directly related to ocean currents. Not only how warm or cold these currents are but how they shift around the globe.

I look at the ocean as the earth's circulatory system. The ambient air temps are a factor but they are more a result of ocean temps and patterns. The world is mostly water after all so it just makes sense that the water has the most infulence over global temps.

Good, good post.

I am a strong skeptic to the the theory. That also comes to no surprise to anyone who really knows me either. Just as Earth has gotten warmer over the last few years, it will get colder.

If you really read into the theory of global warming, all of the Hurricanes back in 2005 that made landfall in the U.S. should have maintained peak intensity as they made landfall. The real fact is THEY DID NOT.

Another point. Some of told me in recent months that there will be rises in the ocean water depth and the areas of water are eating away at the shoreline. Come out to the Eastern and Central Burlington, Atlantic, and Cumberland Counties. Sand is the dirt type. Water has actually decreased in "size" over the last century and beyond, not expanded. I hope that made sense.

I think that people get hung up on the phrase "global warming." What is more appropriate is climate change. Our weather seems to be getting more and more extreme in every regard. We don't really seem to have long springs, have strangly warm days in the middle of winter, and 40 degree changes from one day to the next happen with great regularity. You have to see something funny is happening when the trees all started blooming in January after that stretch of warm weather. It's not neccessarily warming, it's weirding of our weather!

ABSOLUTELY ON BOARD WITH YOU ON THIS DAVID A! I have always been a critic of most global warming theories. If anything we know that the earth has been through a series of warming and cooling trends over millions of years. The length of time man has existed is just a blip on the overall chart of the earths lifespan and to immediately assume that a couple of hundred years worth warming trend would suggest we are the culprite is little more than fear mongering to me. Do we have an impact ? Of course. Are we likely to have seen our impact yet? Doubtful.
I think Dr. William Gray has stated the correct stance on Hurricanes and their patterns for a while now.
GREAT JOB DAVID!

Ice cores drilled from the Arctic showed warm ups at different times, way before people showed up

And how long have we been keeping tabs on the Weather? Just over 100 years so there is no possible way in telling what is REALLY going on. We have a long way to go in leaning about Mother Nature

Look at the Revolutionary war... There were major weather events noted during the Military Campaigns and it showed summers with heavy rains and long cold snowy winters.. Indicating to me, Hurricanes, Nor Easters, Blizzards...

We have just begun

2 U.N. reports from scientists have confirmed global warming. If we implement the Kyoto accords, it will reduce global warming, not even prevent it. Can we afford to ignore this?

Even though February was one of the coldest on record and April is also looking like it, if you average out months between now and 100 yrs. ago, global warming is here. No doubt about it. It will will warm and cool on and on. Car people are now building hybrids that could get you 100 miles plus a gallon. This movie that was 1 hr long about global warming showed that 10% of the things we do that help global warming accelerate is when our cars are at a stop. 10% of emissions wasted! Now they are building cars that not only run on electricity and better gas, but when your car stops, it will not run on gas anymore. So that would reduce global warming somewhat as well.

They also said if they go in southern Arizona (in 100 sq. miles of open land) and set up those reflecting looking things that collect heat, there would be enough energy collected from the sun daily to power every house in the U.S. How great would that be. Everyone would be so much richer too!

But how can we look at records?????

It just shows a small period of time what the weather was like

What happens if the weather we had this year and 2006, already occured in 1729? Even Before?

montly averages thundertush. It keeps going up and will continue to do so unless being reduced or stopped. That doesnt look like it is going to happen any time soon.

Dude, how can anyone say though that the monthly averages didn't go up before we started keeping record?

No one can say that... Not even the Mets because there is no true determination of what Mother nature will do...

Sure, we can use the records we have been keeping for the past 100 years but does not compare to what was unwritten so we do not know if the averages are accurate because we could be in the middle of a Cycle

The Earth does cycle regarding weather

And then there is a major player called NAO

NAO has been in a cycle for years

A positive cycle in winters, meaning less snow for the North East

Europe has seen more record cold and snow than they have seen and they have been keeping records longer than us

Sure we could be in a cycle. Global warming is here. Since the Industrial Revolution began. For those who are arguing global warming.... Why is the Arctic melting????? Why is Antarctica melting?????

Well put Thundertush. You guys are looking at a speck of sliver in time. You cannot possibly even comprehend the small period of time from 1729 - 2007 to when the earth began.

Before the Industrial Revolution what could have made or even compare to the rapid intensification of global warming today? And if it did, global warming must have climbed at a very, very tiny rate. Most of this had to start after the Industrial Revolution began.
