WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House is throwing support behind a plan to speed release of $25 billion in loans to troubled automakers but is rejecting a Democratic proposal to use money from a financial bailout for car companies. Spokeswoman Dana Perino says the Democratic proposal would lead to partisan gridlock because the $700 billion rescue package was never intended to help automakers and shouldn't be now. For that reason, she told The Associated Press that the White House is now actively asking Congress to accelerate loans it first approved in September. Those loans were meant to help automakers build more fuel-efficient vehicles. The administration now supports allowing it to be used for more urgent purposes as the companies struggle to stay afloat.

What do you make of this?

Thanks for blogging,

Corrina

Hi Corrina,
At least they are not GETTING THE MONEY. It is a loan which they will have to pay back.

The so called bailouts and stimulating the economy the government is doing is a big mistake and a waist of tax dollars. If those idiots in Washington want to stimulate the economy then give money to the people not corporations.
To give money to the automakers will not do anything except prolong the end. If the public cant afford to buy a new car, for which is how the automakers make their money, then what will giving them all that money do? Nothing but make the executives richer.

Ericjhach you are so right, the Government could do mre by giving the people the money to pay their House payments, buy cars, or what ever they need and that would do more for everyone and bail out the Banks,Car Manufactures, and so on....

Let's see -- for thirty years, Detroit has been producing overpriced (due, amongst other reasons, to over-salaried union labor), lesser-quality and less efficient cars, allowing Japanese automakers to dominate our markets.

And all the while, the union members have been getting fat and lazy, and the upper management staff have been paying themselves gargantuan salaries and pensions -- fiddling while Rome was burning.

More fuel-efficient cars? Why didn't Detroit start researching and building them after the oil crisis of the 70s?

Sure, let's bail them out. They certainly deserve it.

But on a less emotional level, if we don't bail them out, the economic repercussions will be devastating.

Again, construct the bailout as a loan -- with prerequisites of major management and union concessions on salary structure and benefit packages and pensions. We have to be smart about this.

I thought the reason why American car manufacturers were sending their work to foreign countries was for cheap labor. So if vehicles/parts such as transmissions are being assembeled in Mexico for example, why do they need a loan? I for one say they shouldn't get any kind of money from the government. They send their work to foreign countries for cheap labor, they should be making money. It's not the governments fault they didn't produce more fuel efficient vehicles.

Why in the world should the government/taxpayers dollars go to auto companies?

Most of thier autos are not even built here!
Give them a grant to continue to build thier cars in other countries?

How will this help America?

I think a little union busting is in order here.

The auto workers union is directly responsible for the plight of the auto manufacturers!

They bleed them dry, and the cost of thier comfort is passed down to the auto buyer!

That is us!

Detroit has been building junk for years, and any American who builds a good sound vehicle is run out of the market.(anyone remember the Tucker)
I myself drive a 15 year old Pathfinder, with regular maintence, the V-6 engine gives me 16 to 18 in the city and 20 to 24 on the road ,depending on weather I'm pulling my trailer or not. When Detroit can preform like this ,they may get my business.

The way I see it and since they are so giving on bailouts...they can just bail me out of my debt since they took a big part in causing this economic depression state we are in today! It wasn't my fault all this happened...it was theirs! I could use a nice long vacation so give me back my money so I can get out of debt!!!

I really hate how ppl keep bashing GM, Ford, Chrysler, yet haven't even driven one in many years.

15 year old pathfinder?

I have a 10 year old GMC Jimmy, 15 in town, 20 on hwy, with a bigger tow capacity, with 200K and nothing but tires, battery and radiator. And it still looks great.

I'll admit, in the '80s and some of the '90s GM wasn't being run by the correct people, and they did turn out some, SOME bad cars. But so hasn't the imports.

People forget how much the world owes Detroit. If it wasn't for them, we would never have won WWII.

Over priced? It isn't Detroit’s fault that the employees are so greedy, and get paid much higher wages than the imports.

You want the cars cheaper, but the guys at Toyota get paid less than those at GM. The cars that are made in the US, by Toyota, still have most of the parts made overseas, then assembled here. But they get those parts made and developed pennies to the dollar, compared to GM.

When you buy a car from Toyota, that money goes to Japan, not a US company.

And by the way, my GMC was made here in the USA, and so isn't the best sedan in the world, the Caddy CTS, the best sports car, the Corvette.

GM has been on a major change over the last 8 years. The cars are much better, and as good of gas mileage as anything the imports are giving us, except maybe the Prius atm, but the Chevy Volt will hush that very soon.

I say bail them out. Way too many other companies depend on Detroit, hundreds of thousands of people work in the US Auto market.

Let the TAXPAYING CITIZEN (those who actually pay the government money, make the decision. The Fed should give the money back to US, the TAXPAYING CITIZEN in the form of rebates, say $5,000-10,000 for the purchase of a new or used car. Let the TAXPAYING CITIZEN "vote" on which of the automakers should stick around.

As mentioned in other posts, most of the domestic makers are partnered with Asian and European automaker (Ford Focus is a Mazda, Pontiac Vibe is a Toyota Matrix, etc. etc.).

The problem with US makers are excessive layers of management (they can't make strategic decisions fast enough) and ridiculous union contracts. Let them all go by by and start over.

Give me a quality vehicle at a fair price with a low interest rate and I'll buy your car. Keep making these ugly block shaped cars that get poor gas mileage and break down constantly packaged with rotten bank rates and you can blow it out your ear.

I'm just not a fan of giving someone money when they have proven time and time again that they can't manage money, make poor choices, and pay ridiculous salaries to folks who don't work for or deserve it.

I agree with the Captain. Heres a question for ya Water rat ,Why is it un patriotic for the consumer to try to get the best dealthey can,yet it is patriotic to run a thriving industry into the ground? Keep in mind the auto makers are asking the consumers(govt.) for a bailout not the other way around. As for Detroit winning the war,Do you actually believe that someone else wouldn't have stepped into fill the gap?

There was a time when it was important to only buy American. As soon as people started to use that against us and to run prices up, not caring one lick about us, that time passed. I gladly support American Pride. Not American greed or stupidity.

Listen, Corrina. Why would someone "bail out" $25 million? To throw all that money out of a plane, for no reason, is crazy! Better to give it to the homeless people so they could buy more booze and drugs.

I was against the goverment bailing out Dodge years ago, but Lee Iiacco proved me and a great many Americans wrong. Not only was the goverment repaid in full, but before the due date and at a good intrest rate. Of the three, Ford is in the best shape with some approiximately 12 billion in assets and another 10.5 billion in lines of credit. I'm not against, it provided their management is reviewed and deemed up to the task. At a glance and apparently to many this is a corporate bailout, but it is a bailout for 100's of thousands of autoworkers and those that are indirectly employed as vendors and subcontractors. Bailing out homeowners that are jobless is rather pointless. Just a thought.

Meb I've got no problem with a loan if that's what it is call it as such. And if these are loans some conditions should be put in place. Such as sacking upper management, changing modis operendi. Makes no sense trusting the people who put a business in a hole to pull it ,out does it?

It would seem that all these bailouts are strictly for big businesses, companies, and Wall Street Market in which is proven not to help the economy at all...but none has gone to helping with those who have been hit the hardest with unemployment, smaller businesses, families foreclosed on! Things as usual have been twisted to help those who are already well off instead of those who stand to lose everything! Really twisted Government here now that still bends over for the rich!
