LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- The mother was running out of more than patience when she abandoned her 18-year-old daughter at a hospital over the weekend under Nebraska's safe-haven law. She was also running out of time: She knew that state lawmakers would soon meet in a special session to amend the ill-fated law so that it applies to newborns only. "Where am I going to get help if they change the law?" said the mother, who lives in Lincoln and asked to not be identified by name to protect her adopted child.

To the state's surprise and embarrassment, more than half of the 31 children legally abandoned under the safe-haven law since it took effect in mid-July have been teenagers. But state officials may have inadvertently made things worse with their hesitant response to the problem: The number of drop-offs has almost tripled to about three a week since Gov. Dave Heineman announced on Oct. 29 that lawmakers would rewrite the law.

The safe-haven law was intended to save "Dumpster babies" by allowing desperate young mothers to abandon their newborns at a hospital without fear of prosecution. But lawmakers could not agree on an age limit, and the law as passed uses only the word "child." All states have safe-haven laws, but in every state but Nebraska, the law applies to infants only.

What do you make of lawmakers hesitant response to the problem?  How about parents giving up their teens?

If they could not take care of their child then THEY the parents should never have adopted/had the child to begin with. This is another ill planned way to prevent children from having to raise children. Parents should have told their child the consequences of THAT action. With the lawmakers hesitant response it will push mothers to do irrational things like harming the child.

I would rather see them drop them off at a Hospital, then put them on the Street, to get in trouble or start Hooking...

It's indicative of the frustration people have with dealing with their children these days. Thanks to modern liberalism, the state has taken away parent's rights and authority to raise their progeny without the constant threat of "big brother" bringing charges for abuse.

Hmmm...wonder if it they take 50 year olds... On the serious side of things...if the child is 18 years old..couldnt the parent have just gone through the court system to evict them? Once they are 18..technically they are responsible for themselves. If the parents don't want them there..they would be better off on their own an have a better chance in life.

I took my 22 yearold son to Lincoln and droped him off and I couldn't believe he beat me home. I thought people stop picking up hitchhikers.

Well, people take a good thing and make it bad, this is for babies and small children.

Wow, that's a real eye opener. If the daughter is 18, isn't she considered an adult by law anyway?

Why cant people use common sense? Why does the courts and government have to spell everything out for us? Or are we that dumb we cant be civilized and figure it out like adults?

I can understand the legislature's dilemma: all children are defenseless if abandoned so you don't want the parents afraid to take them to a safe place b/c they'll get into trouble. Yes, they set out to set the law up for newborns and infants but who wants the mom of a three year old to do something more drastic? They probably feel like they're stuck and might do more harm than good by limiting the age of the children. I do think that eighteen is a little bit of closing the door on the barn.

Listen, Corrina. Have you ever been around a child? Wouldn't you want to abandon them as well? Nebraska is the perfect place for them. All that space and no one to bother. And it's not like their parents couldn't go and get them again in, let's say, 10 or 20 years, right? No harm, no foul. Nebraska could be like that Star Trek episode where children ruled a planet, and Captain Kirk took them back up to the ship, and they had mental powers. Remember that one? Then again, that was kind of gay. Never mind....
