WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic aides say Speaker Nancy Pelosi intends to seek legislation to provide relief to the battered auto industry, and wants it done in a post-election session of Congress likely to convene in the next few days. Pelosi is not expected to specify how large a bailout she wants. The aides who described her views Tuesday did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss it publicly. The speaker's decision comes a few days after General Motors warned it is rapidly running out of cash, and Ford announced its situation was only slightly better. President Bush would have to agree to sign the legislation, which would be passed well before President-elect Obama takes office.

Think this is a good or bad idea?

Thanks for blogging,
Corrina

They could take the money and shred it. Then use it for weed control in a flower bed and net better results then stealing from us through taxes to give to failing industries that choose to make really crappy business decisions.

I think this is a bad idea. If GM buys out Chrysler then that should be enough to stabilize GM and as for Ford let them go under then GM can buy them out too. No more bailouts will be asked for because there will only be one company. As for Pelosi someone needs to tell her to stop giving this money out to who ever asks for it. The bailout was intended to help out the banks no one else.

If the people running this country had brains they would be dangerous. If the want to bailout anyone then they should sent a few thousand to everyone who pays taxes not to those corporations.

The Auto Industry needs to ask their CEO's to bail them out. As for Nancy Pelosi, she should have a mental evaluation soon or look into "Late" Retirement.

The thought of bailing out the auto industry and "a good idea" is just an oxy moron. If Speaker Palosi wants to personally bail out the auto industry along with her millionaire friends than have at it. But PLEASE don't pick on the people struggling to meet their financial responsibilities; Those of us that don't live above our means.

Bail out or not, we (our Govt. AND Consumers) MUST support our LARGEST Industry that employs 10s of 1000s of people all over the country (from rubber manufacturers, to glass makers, to all the 100s of parts companies, to their own HUGE group of employees). ONCE ==OUR== INDUSTRY IS GONE, IT ISN’T COMING BACK. e.g. Our once massive Electronics Industry. The Japanese didn’t keep ONE (1) of our manufacturing plants open here after buying the ruins. Are we so disloyal (or ignorant) that we’ll allow the Japanese to kill another of OUR industries???! It may not affect you directly (your job) but it affects the economy WE ALL LIVE IN directly – and we all know it hammers us all.

Their (OUR) unethical ruthless competitors, the Japanese, have been GREATLY subsidized by THEIR Govt. since they began, being paid to sell cars for less than they cost to make them here in order to STEAL market share, to greedy selfish American consumers who don't realize they are damaging their own economy and Standard of Living by supporting that of the Japanese instead. When pressured to play fair (during Reagan), THEY, the Japanese, even blamed the American consumer calling us, disloyal, and selfish, which spawned a study that showed Japanese consumers buy nearly all Japanese products vs. Americans who only bought a small percent American.

This is the main reason the Japanese have become so successful here: UNRELENTING GOVT. SUPPORT. Those old enough here should remember the JUNK they sold for decades that people here bought because it saved them a few $100-$1000 or so – they have no

Let the auto/housing bailout come from the same people who played a huge part in Obama's election--OPRAH, ELLEN, MSM, and the morons in Hollywood. They believe in spreading the wealth; let's spread their wealth.

Oprah and Ellen purchase a new American made auto for each citizen--what the heck, buy one for the illegals as well. Detroit is back in business; their employees spend money which is good for the economy. Then, the Hollywood morons and the MSM buy houses for everyone. The first people to receive these are the people at the bottom of the income ladder and illegals. WHY? Getting a new car/house will place them into a tax bracket where they will have to pay taxes. You keep this give away going until most of the bailout money has been repaid using this new tax money or Oprah, Ellen, Hollywood, MSM are broke.
Thus you have solved the housing/foreclosure problem, you have bailed out the auto industry, and repaid a huge portion of the $700 billion the idiots in Congress passed.
Oprah, Ellen, MSM and the Hollywood morons should be broke by now and may actually need to get a "real job".
That's my plan, and I'm sticking to it!

The bail outs should be loans and require new directions. Gas guzzlers should go. Fuel efficient personal vehicles only should be allowed. I hate to say it, but the high gasoline prices were good. It is the only thing that made some people get smarter.
If any gas price should go down, it should be diesel because it impacts all of the economy.
The last time fuel went up, auto industry was hurt, they still went back to producing gas pigs.
They aren't smart enough to make better choices.

The auto industry and it's unions (UAW) have ruined the car and truck business themselves. I being from the Michigan area that depends upon the autos have seen many disasters from same(auto industry). Case in point, I have a acquaintance who recently retired from Chrysler with a retirement package that is unreal. A check for $37,612. A certificate for 10K to be used on the purchase of a new Chrysler auto. $2.500 per month for life. Super health and dental benefits for the whole family (9). All for 31 years of as he puts it "milking the industry". Having others clock in and out while enjoying a day home. Sleeping in his car after clocking in for several hours. I have personally seen his tax returns, 75K-100K for a position at Chrysler "mopping and sweeping". This is the honest truth. The Industry needs, to start with, Two or Three points to correct. 1- Cut Cost starting with the top. 2-Decrease retail prices of it's fleet. 3- Provide financing suitable to all for ALL Joe The _____'s. Read the "small print" in the auto adds as on TV. Only Bill Gates could qualify for the "come on" financing. One could go on for ever with this so THANK YOU for the opportunity to voice my thoughts. well I don't know why like other have said that the government wants to bail out these companies (who then have vacation type meetings on our dime). Its the American tax payer who needs the help from markets that went boom and then pop...its funny GM running out of money but yet heard over the weekend they were buying chysler. Might want to look into that one..

Actually, it's not a Bail-Out as in Free Money. GM and Ford are asking for lower interest govt. loans. It's not unprecedented. Our govt. can and has done this to protect our economy. If they don't, we'll have another dried-up Forever American industry that will NEVER return (like the electronics industry). Then we can look forward to living like the Europeans – in a permanent Recession with reduced work hours (“job sharing”) and the loss of opportunities to work hard and make something of ourselves. We’ll take whatever job is left and know that there’s nothing better available here.

My understanding is that the GM/Chrysler thing is not a buy-out but a merger. It's all rumor now, but probably a good thing.

Auto workers are some of the best paid people with the best benefits in this country. Unfortunately the auto employees are bankrupting the auto companies they work for. American consumer can not afford to buy American made cars.

I agree AM. It's ridiculous how much bolt-tighteners get paid / benefits at American auto companies – due to the Unions and the threat of strikes. Japanese workers would be fired for striking. And bolt-tighteners in Japan are treated well and respectfully, but realistically. Not like Royalty, but valued not-greatly-skilled or educated labor, and paid accordingly. They wouldn’t DREAM of being paid what ours demand, let alone STRIKING. I have 2 engineer friends who work for GM. One is an Industrial E., so she works around the bolt-tighteners and much of her work involves them, including financial analyses. She’s also familiar with Japanese and Korean systems (they tour our factories (mostly to copy GM’s innovations with Robotics, and she tours theirs, which she says are decades behind us). And as Japanese workers look to make higher wages, less are wanting to be bolt-tighteners. They don’t strike; instead they just go to school and move up. And the companies don’t pay them a fortune to keep them on the job. Instead, Japanese companies either use more Robotics, or they build the pieces in Vietnam & China (a LOT of that – a large % of many Japanese cars is manufactured there). The Japanese govt. doesn’t restrict that. In fact, they SUPPORT anything to help the company increase efficiency and profits so the industry will remain strong and grow. How can OUR American companies compete?

HERE’S HOW: I say that GM, Ford, and Chrysler should tell their bolt-tighteners that they will be paid the going GLOBAL rate. If Toyota pays Vietnamese pe

people a bowl of rice a day, that’s the rate. Take it or leave it. If they leave it, they can go to school and lift themselves and our country UP. And the companies can use Robots as much as they need to.

Scary thing is, it’s bad enough with existing restrictions. Obama’s going to make it even worse, restricting them further and Forcing them to spoon-feed lazy bolt-tighteners even more – and keep more of them . . . which will destroy them and another American Industry. Our govt. needs to support our Industry the way Japan’s supports theirs. It’s for the good of us all.
